Rly like the sandbox vision Ub3rgames have for this version of DF. Lookin forward to keep on testing it.

Actually, I visited the site to see if I could join for "free" and I saw nothing to download the game. All I saw was a statement that preordering gives you instant access to testing.

You just register a account on their site. After that you can download the client...

I am surprised they need to 'stress test' the game, i didn't think that they were using a new game engine instead of the one in the original Darkfall, so then what can it be for, unless they are using inferior server hardware perhaps to the original game and need to test it for that?

I dunno, maybe they added some new lines in their server/net code which need to be tested? Or is it just to keep up with RoA which offered free to play until it launches?

Shuoldn't take long. I predict in less than 3 years, they will shitcan DF1 again and go back to Unholy Wars.

Whenever companies ask for players to load test the servers - the primary motive is to get players into the game - so this is really a sales tactic.

The truth is MMOs can be load tested with dev tools that simulate 1000s of player connections, this is how player and load metrics are generated so that hardware capacity can be purchased to match player counts.

Having a consistent reproducable server load is also a great way to test code optimizations.

I could understand if it was a new game in development and they hadn't tested the servers for max load yet. But for a game that has been released for a decade, that has gone through many iterations already, this is an obvious sales pitch. I thought the game was dated way back when, so I honestly don't see how many people will still be interested when it literally looks like a game from 2002.

Haven't both these versions been one giant sales tactic? It will be interesting to see their player base numbers once they decide to stop keep letting people play for free (likely the only way these will have a player base and im sure the devs know that with all the play for free announcements we've seen, but why not have the short opportunity to sell some box copies + subs like we seen bigger publishers do before now.)

And how long will these keep mass appeal? I can see alot taking the opportunity to play a FFA pvp open world for a few weeks fun for free like they have been offering... but is there really going to be much interest after they had their few weeks free fun with this really old game?

Well, they are actually changing most of the game from how it was when AV ran it. They are re-building most of it. It's not the DF that AV ran. And not the DF that RoA will be. DnD will for instance have: local Banking, faster travel on roads, caravans, mount skills (like sprinting), no recall. They will add more "sand" into the sandbox.

I do think the developers of RoA is the better team though. We'll see.

I wouldn't expect to see many people.

Lol, the team that rushed to launch the client without taking proper security precautions as instructed and who intend to basically relaunch a polished version of the same game that failed miserably?

    I think not.

New Dawn is the one and only hope of Darkfall ever being a success.

They added a new major mechanic spawn scaling and they want to stress test it.

It will always be a niche this game. You can loose time investment too easily to grief clans. Once everybody is skilled up the system to make people work together won't be needed and it will turn into the same PVP PK gang fest. Many have multi accounts already, which side steps any anti grief counters. They developers are too keen to keep the full loot system when this game will have a much larger player base if you kept your equipment and just lost stuff in your pack. PVP would flow much better if they focused on the PVP and not full loot, but they've got to make it full loot and shoot themselves in the foot in regards to retaining players in the long run. Large scale PVP MMO's should never be full loot, it's a chore not a feature.

There is no other game that offers what darkfall offers. As long as darkfall is living my interest will be well kept

The reason is obvious - its a marketing tactic to get more people to play and boost sales.

Why word it as "stress test"? Why not just saying hey our games is free to access for a while come check it out? I fail to see the point here because stress test is not an attractive term.

Well this time they think they can build  a game where there is this huge player base that's gong to show up to be farmed by the skilled players and not quit after two weeks.  Just stick around and give gear and resources away as they get endlessly dry looted.

Lets face it, the skill level to be even modestly successful is astronomically high, there are only a handful of players that are any good at Darkfalll and they already know about this game and are already playing it.

Its an incredibly complex game, that requires unbelievable skill in aiming, super human timing and rocket science skill weapon switching combinations to be successful.  Its like playing chess and having .05 seconds to decide your next move and you have to do that 100 times in a row to win.

The time to live for most players once  PvP starts is so short you never get a chance to actually get better. And the consequences are dire, you lose everything you had on you and your ported back to butt fck Egypt naked and alone standing by a bind stone,  completely removed from the conflict you spent hours and hours preparing to participate in.  Its just not what people want to do with their limited game time.

The only chance you have at success is hundereds and hunderds of hours of dueling to just get the basics down.  Most people don't like to duel.  They want to learn organically through play, but you cant in DF.  Most of the most effective skills in darkfall dont work in PVE so you never get a change to really use them and see how they work together unless your balls deep in PvP with some vet getting destroyed.  You cant learn organically through PvP, time to live is too short and too costly.

This game has the same problem as DF, which is one half of one percent of gamers can be effective at it.  And full loot just creates this hopeless spiral for eveyone else.

I hope I'm proved wrong but I wont be.  Darkfall failed, Unholy Wars failed, Mortal Online, might as well be a fail, its not the way the game was made or the developers its the complexity and the rule sets.

I am going to keep putting this here until one day one of the Darkfall teams sees this. Put in a pve server. I loved exploring in this game, but not exploring and running into a gank squad. I would get back into this game as a carebear.

I will say that a big part of New Dawn's roadmap is catering to the carebears. They have already fixed the alignement issue where other blue players no longer will kill you (they can but 99% won't unless you give them very good reason to) you only need to worry about your factions enemies which are all very far away from starter areas.

They are also adding in local market's and global gold like eve, where you can just trade and buy what you need instead of having to craft and harvest. Deaths don't hurt as much because you will be able to just go to the market you respawn at and buy the appropriate "ready bag" and be good to go, whereas before it would set you back various amounts of time depending on your access to nearby master crafters and what not.

Finally they are adding watchtowers https://darkfallnewdawn.com/game-mechanics/clan-warfare/watchtowers/ that player controlled areas can use to set their own rules, offering protections etc for taxes and what not. Those should be in the coming months, so check back.

They will be doing another free period down the line and have implemented a trial system they can turn on whenever they like. I'll add that I've always been a darkfall fanboy and carebear since the original eu launch.
