These started as a way a way to get more players involved in MMORPG gaming, which was fine. But they have now inevitably devolved into spiraling credit card wars. (For example I just recently saw a plan being advertised for Archeage which had a list price of $700 something dollars). Posters in this thread have said that subscription gaming is never going to come back again. And I guess they're probably right. But neither are players like me ever going to put up with this kind of new age bullshit. So it may be that I'm now essentially done with MMORPGs altogether.
I can narrow it down to ONE choice and that would be hand holding.I want it all removed. That means no yellow markers,no arrows,no markers on maps showing you exactly where to go,no recipe books showing you exactly how to craft,i want EVERYTHING to be discovered.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Nothing says "I don't want to play the game you've spent years developing and millions of dollars on" more than entering a sparsely populated server and trying to find and meet people (who are mostly bots) and when you introduce yourself, you get hacked to pieces and what little you had is taken.

There are so many but if i have to pick just ONE thing it would be...
Game design/mechanics that promote a toxic, antisocial, and mostly solo community
Why even have a massive multiplayer if you don't want to or have no reason to interact with other players? It then becomes a single player game where you see others running around doing single player stuff too.
When player interactions are reduced to things like getting PKed, getting insulted by trolls in chat for asking a serious question, or joining a random party via an automated cross-server matchmaker where nobody chats at all the entire time and you never see those people again once the party ends there is a problem.
More needs to be done to promote positive player interactions. After all, the most memorable moments from past games come from doing things with other players (friends, guildmates, random people, and sometimes even enemies).
Open World PvP on normal severs (PvP servers only) Level scaling Cash shops Crazy RNG (a bit is fine, but WoW Legion levels are waaaaaaaay too high) Free to Play (Buy to Play can stay though)
MMO's used to survive without it and can survive without it again, instancing kills immersion but has become so accepted it's sickening. Also if there is going to be instancing then in needs to be open to all to either join in on or invade. Instancing has become so accepted and common that it's often overlooked as one of the main problems of the genre in making a believable world.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
So many to list and many have already been said, but i would like to add General chat, or zone chats what ever. i hate the fact that players can speak to the entire server and it allways turns into a troll fest.

How about adding some risk to that? Like losing skill facing less skill opponents.

Races need to have stats that actually do something.
They need to get rid of everyone working for Trion and WOW.
Flying and the Sea need to be utilized.
