Announced today, Guild Wars 2 is about to overhaul its PVP League system with the launch of Season 5 on December 13th. With a new way to gauge skill, a new League UI, a new rewards system, and a shakeup of the maps inside of Ranked Play. It’s a whole lot to go through, and you can read up on all of the changes here. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with PVP Gameplay Programmer Evan Lesh, who shed a bit more light on the changes.

EL: While there’s value in exploring new map types, having multiple game modes in League play effectively creates multiple queues where some players never compete against each other. This means a global Skill Rating has less meaning, as you don’t know how a player earned that rating. Because of that, it’s unlikely that League play will ever include more than one game.

Unfortunately, I really enjoy stronghold. The battles are not focused on little 5ft diameter king of the hill circles that cater to specific class specs. I get the problem that teams can go only full O and never fight each other. I guess that's the freedom of the map - if you want to race to the lord then try it? Maybe doorbreakers only explode once, killing themselves in the process - to stop that initial summon from being all it takes to reach lord, or have players start with zero supply?

Maybe have stronghold run its own queue and tournament? Instead of shelving it forever? I mean, I fully feel we won't see any progress on any other game modes now, whether it be deathmatch or stronghold.

They could do this or they could have put it as a map choice for players who queue up. That said though, there are a lot of problems with Stronghold at the moment that they need to fix first.

If they ever release a game mode that is just as simple as Conquest, they'd probably hit a home run with it.

    This is not a game.

    Great!
As for the stronghold, the main problem this map has is the players.
The majority can't/don't want to learn new map mechanics.
You see this every time Anet tries to provide variations on the conquest model.
That's why of all the PvP maps only a few are available in ranked.
I like stronghold as well, but I don't queue for it because there is a high chance that some of my team mates won't know how to play the map.

These are honestly some great changes, and a step into the right direction for spvp and something that should have been considered long ago when they first introduced the pip system. With this new prestige system hopefully now I can get more competitive matches with people my skill level, instead of facing off against players who don't know what they are doing.

But I won't be holding my breath until I get to experience it myself.

And Overwatch stole it from LoL, what's your point?
If the system is good games will use it hence more and more games are switching to this system.

In the second season even me as casual ALMOST reached the legendary league.
In the following seasons I didn't bother, it was just a constant back and forth with no advancement.

If you score 3 times in a row you will advance, if not: tough luck.
People with the same win ratio could have a greatly different placement depending on this win streak luck.

The only question I have is: Why did it take you so long to realize this system is complete garbage?
