Ashes of Creation came out of nowhere recently to be one of the upcoming most wanted MMOs based on its premise and a couple of early trailers alone. In light of their impressive vision, we reached out to Intrepid Studios to speak with their Creative Director and Founder Steven Sharif.

Yes this is a really great concept.
What I like about this game is that PvP is not FFA, it has a meaning, there is an alignment system similar to EvE.

Many developers are making the mistake of producing FFA PvP games with little restrictions, and I don't really think that's what the MMO community wants/needs right now.

Apart for that everything else looks good to me, I am looking forward to see more of this game.

They just need a different acronym. Everytime I see "AoC" I think Age of Conan.

"We want every system in our game to be meaningful, and this means that we disincentivize griefing and ganking severely through our flagging system, while incentivizing cooperation and community building. We want people to fight, but not murder each other."

Sold. Where/when do you take my money?

I will need to see the penalties for PvP before I take any interest. UO had penalties and a flagging system but that didnt stop the gankers from waiting at a portal or outside of town to gank those coming in / leaving. They introduced Trammel for a reason.

If I can be killed willy nilly then no thanks.

See, I don't understand why developers don't get that players want this kind of PvP in a MMO, they don't want a Kill On Sight system, which is more suited to FPS Multiplayer games.
They insist making FFA games no one wants to play and they still don't get it.

EVE PvP system is the only type of PvP (not talking about the instanced) that will ever work in MMOs, just copy and paste it, how difficult can it be?
I hope AoC will do just that, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Had never heard of this game till this article, after watching the two trailers, viewing the ss's, and reading the article color me quite intrigued. I do love when something exciting pops up out of no where, already looks/sound better than half of the EA mmo's we get these days.

The name Intrepid Studios sounds familiar... they've been developing another game for some time now, can't remember which though.

As a PvE player I have little interest in the spate of new games invovling FFA PvP or gankfest games.  Perhaps this will be different.  Early days.

They should reconsider their decisions as industry experts have spoken!

Every time dev veterans get together and form new studio we players get

    a) very good game - rarely or never
    b) great forum threads - most of the time

One way or another players win.

In all fairness it is not FFA PvP it is a PvP that has an alignment system, which means you can't kill anyone you like, or if you do, there are serious consequences for it.

This is great news for the future of MMO's, I had all but given up hope for some fresh ideas in the world of MMORPG's.

The most important thing I saw out this interview with SS was.

"The "end-game" notion is really one we are trying to redefine... We don't want there to be an end to our game."

The end game of an MMO is that there should not be an end game. End game means just that you have finished the game, time to move on to another, which is what was happening. The Gear Grind end game needs die a quick death.

Also the statement "we focus a lot on motivating the community to work together." is very encouraging as well.

Best of luck with this concept. You have my support.

They lost me at "We are more fitted towards a traditional tab-targeted system". The vast majority of MMOs out there are tab-targetting games, would it hurt to have something a little more...active?

As for the rest, well it's mostly ideas so far, seeing how they haven't begun full-production yet. I hope they'll be able to stick to their initial plans and ideas, but they might have to walk back on some of them once they start working on building the game. And there's always the chance that what they deliver might simply end up being much closer to the traditional systems then what we could think of based on what they wrote. I'm reminded of Guild Wars 2 and how they wanted to move away from the questing system, but ultimately the only thing that was changed was the presentation of those quests.

Anyway... it's too soon to tell whether they'll be able to deliver or not, but I remain skeptical. Here's hoping that I'm wrong.

I will keep an eye on this one. I wonder if the housing will be instanced...Not using unity for an mmo like many of the other crowd funded games have done is a good start from these guys. Just buying a ton of unity assets and duct taping it together and calling it an mmo isn't working for the crowdfunding mmo's the past few years. As for giving any money for the crowd funding of it, I can't see me doing that but I hope it ends up being very good when it's released so that I want to buy it. Shroud of the avatar is the last crowdfunded game I will ever spend big money on. Turned out they didn't have the talent or know how to create a good game nor had the planning from the start to be able to do so, don't think I'll ever be fooled enough to spend money on crowdfunding again because of that disaster, lol.
