Cold Iron is a newly created game studio set to launch a new AAA online action game. Some of the veterans are great friends of the site and have worked on several MMOs over the years. CEO, Craig Zinkievich goes all the way back to City of Heroes. We are very excited for their new project and here is what they have to say about their upcoming plans.

Look forward to see what they have in store for us, how they can bring some new ideas to the stagnant MMO world stage.

    Best of luck!

Well, the statement is that it is an online action game being developed by people who have worked on MMOs.  It doesn't state the game is an MMO.

I'll bet it's a team-shooter or survival game or a hybrid of those two.

The current hype is card games. Only after Valve finally drops the team shooter facade that is TF2 and releases "Hats. A trading card hats game" will we see new (as in, not done in the last 5 years) ideas.

I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

I BELIEVE these guys are fully, privately funded. I BELIEVE! I think there was another article about that. So...... probably no KS? EA? Maybe? Or maybe they just do a KS for shits and giggles.

Well... All the best of luck guys. Given how things are going, I'd get as much done as possible, before the inevitable decline of the economy kicks in.

    What do i agree with??
When he says the sci Fi genre is so big it has tons of possibilities for ideas.
I have never disagree with that,in fact i have stated many times that the sci-fi genre is too tough to make games for because you need to basically build 2-3 games in one and we are struggling to get studios to put in enough effort to make one game.
    Soooooo....
The end result are games that simply look like studios are targeting a weak market. The end result are games missing way too many components for me to give them anymore than a big time failing grade.I don't rate games based on the number of players,i couldn't care less what people are wasting their money on,i look at what a studio is aiming for and do they deliver.

    Here is a little hint...
Sci-fi needs space vehicles, ground vehicles, planets, several races/lore for each planet, tons of assets to make each planet look unique as it SHOULD.Then we need economies, each planet totally different.
I think you begin to see the problem trying to make a triple A Sci-Fi game.
Instead what we have seen so far are boring space maps, some boring ships that are really no more than a cockpit with a hud and some VERY small bland economies and reason for role playing.

Where do players live, what do they eat and drink, how about ground weapons and armor as well as space technology type gear?man oh man, this genre needs a boat load of work to pull it off....GOOD LUCK !!.

I like the idea of a new AAA SF title, even if it appears to be action oriented.  (Not my preference).  But the talk of innovation sounds promising.

I do hope this studio does something different than recent development companies -- keep their game under wraps until its ready to release.  I feel the community has disrupted a couple of ventures by having too much conceptual information prior to actual working code.  Customer expectations have gotten out of hand interpreting vague promises, intentions and dog-and-pony shows.  Keep the game under wraps until it is nearly finished.  A good product will capture the market on its own merit, it rarely needs a market before the product is delivered.  Few people had advance knowledge of EQ, UO, or even WoW -- there weren't wildly speculative expectations of how these products would be before these products were in our collective hands.

Just a wish for something different.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

We are pretty desperate so any new games that have real funding are good news here. Standard trinity, action based, turned based, heck, Ill take rock, scissor paper based right now. :D

Don't wish this was something different, lets wish for more and varied games.

Yea, I have my doubts that it's a true MMORPG, too.  Best I'm betting on is a "shared world" RPG like Destiny.

The "different" I was (and am) hoping for is how the developers approach the community, not different games.  Innovate the companies building games, and the games they develop will become more innovative.  I think that's when we'll get "more and varied" games.

Sounds like they are aiming for the OTHER gimmick term...EARLY ACCESS,waiting until they have something remotely playable as well as one luring gimmick.

The funny part of the whole title/interview,how many years have devs been telling us they are going to bring us ground breaking, innovative,FUN game play?then all we get are linear Wow clones with tons of hand holding,"?" "!" and all sorts of markers on maps and arrows on the ground, extremely gross immersion breaking game design, ideas. What has been happening are VERY small improvements but ruining other parts of design so it feels we have been going backwards.
Now we should believe these guys ,haha good one.SO why exactly are we seeing this endorsement so early before there is even a game?Who knows, maybe this KS or EA is going to start very soon.
