Funny thing? @Grakulen (Rob) was probably the member of the staff who played the FEWEST MMOs this year. He can chime in, but he spent a lot of time in offline gaming this year, while Suzie and I and the others played almost exclusively MMOs.
Funny part about awards - they're still just opinions, people.
I know. It wasn't a slam on the lists. It was about the pickiness people having about the lists. Myself included.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
BDO...MMORPG award? The story is incomprehensible due to the bad (very very bad) localisation. Any game with the RPG moniker should at the very least have a semblance of a coherent story?

throwing Rob under the bus, what a class act ;D
Someone had to be sacrifice for peace! And Suzie has been really vicious lately, so it makes sense that Grakulen was chosen.

Glad to see Black Desert on there. Too many other sites and MMORPG communities love to hate on this and other Korean games as well as PvP games. There's only a few games you're allowed to praise with the same types of gameplay and the rest must be crap for all the same reasons. So it's nice to see people actually seeing the fun in a wider variety of games and writing good things about them. But beyond that, you guys tend to show more appreciation for PvP games in general which is so needed around here. If you can just get this site revamped (third try's a charm?) and get more people visiting it, maybe the loud minority can see that there's a lot of other people out there that enjoy other games and types of gameplay. It feels a lot like the gaming equivalent of this year's election to me. So thanks and here's to a better year in 2017 for you guys.
Everything is opinion of course and for the most part, most selections look reasonable.
However i have to comment on one and perhaps why the industry just seems so stagnant.
That one game is BDO.Right away it gets my attention because i like effort and graphically speaking, they did a good job,so of course it makes me stand up and take notice, similar to FFXIV.
However after playing for a bit and learning what the game is really about,it turned me off,so badly in fact,i came close to giving away my account because i knew i would never go back to the game. That is not a total knock as the game came close, again similar to FFXIV but it just found a way to ruin everything tit was doing good, like a broken record...yep again just like FFXIV.
Point being,on the surface one could say it is a good game ....lol yeah just like FFXIV but bottom line is i dn't want to play those games, they are what i call "surface games" look good on paper but are simply not good enough to warrant hours...days..months and years of my time.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I never played any ME game, but I'm considering playing the first three before Andromeda.
I still need to finish The Witcher 3 and play the DLCs, but the game is great, no doubt.
FFXV has a lot of flaws, overall though, it's a great game. I really like the four main characters and felt immersed in the game, still playing it and having fun, post endgame content (high level dungeons and bosses) are pretty cool.
FFXIV has the best, most challenging and fun endgame bosses, the EX trials are not only amazing in mechanics, but also the music and design are top tier. The population is healthy and thriving. My favorite crafting system of modern MMOs, S.E. is improving the storytelling in every patch and so many other little details that makes it my favorite modern MMO, well deserved!
Amusing... You give "Most anticipated MMORPG" to "New World", yet that game doesn't even have an approximate launch date (could be 2017 or could be 2020). By this logic you should be giving "Most anticipated RPG" to Cyberpunk 2077 - would be perfectly logical choice considering how many awards the last CDPR's RPG has earned. Yet I see a "Mass Effect" instead - a game from a developer whose previous RPG game in same universe (ME3) had one of the most "controversial" endings, with a huge amount of players disliking it...
Really sounds like at least one (or most likely both) of those large, rich game developer+publishing companies has provided you with some monetary incentive to make a certain choice ;-)
Not much to choose from, if I'm being honest. Still, I've never played most of these, never even heard of Battlerite before, but maybe I should check a few of them out.

Great list. I am not a fan of many of the games but can not fault the list one bit.
Well done once again!
Here is to another grand year for our genre and our community.
Cheers everyone and thank you for making a site many of us call a virtual home!
Yep, I am on the same boat. Not much to rave about so I guess that list is pretty accurate. Though personally ESO One Tamriel is the best expansion/DLC as it chanced the game basically.
Ok, let's get into this. Let's discuss your picks, MMORPG.com!
Most Anticipated RPG: Mass Effect Andromeda - Possibly Sponsored.
Most Anticipated MMO: New World - Probably Sponsored.
Just....stahp. There. Is. No. "SPONSOR". Unless. It. Is. Clearly. Marked.
These were our staff picks, no more, no less.
Ok first off, it's not a federal law, yet, to state something is sponsored. Saying you will state it in your site agreement or anywhere at all is not a contract or guarantee or requirement to honor. News sites do it to avoid frivolous lawsuits by angry people with nothing better to do. I put that next to both because Bioware has, I think, done it before and Amazon has, I think more so, done it before. It was a jab more at those companies than it was at your organization.
Second, geez take a fun poke / joke and laugh. Giving a "you people are ridiculous" is better than whatever that was. I. Like. Periods. Yay!. .
I said a lot more, I liked your picks. I think both games deserve to be in those spots. I agree with a couple people that commented they were surprised your list was so good, I was surprised as well which probably says less nice things about me, I also thought the list was good.
Edit: Also, I'm really bored (obviously).
Actually, the FTC has already ruled on sponsored content. Boogie2988 has a good video on this
So yes. You must label any content that is sponsored as sponsored.
lol how is new world the most anticipated game? there is little to no information about this game. Does amazon help fund the page? I do not post much but I could not post after seeing that.
Comments
I did not find it.
Well done. I agree with this list.
