for the first time. Let's say like in the past year? I was just wondering. We always see people saying "I quit", or "I went back", but does anyone just start?

Never played it and never will. The gfx simply don't appeal to me.
I tried to start for like twice already because it's free until lvl 20 I'm lvl 11 , it's just too boring don't know how to explain it, it's like walking on mud , I started as pandarian because I think they are the most awesome but really don't know it's just weird tons of games out there and going to play a game that has been live for years but still looks like Sherk in wonderland I guess it's just not for me I prefer to play other MMOs and play them for 2-4 years and then join other then WoW.
Whenever i chat with guildies etc they always say they joined in wrath or cata, maybe sometimes MoP but thats it. I cant imagine the starting experience would be very good for a new player. People dont chat in general, people dont chat in cities, people dont chat in dungeons. Almost everyone you do a dungeon with will be decked out in heirlooms and out damage you by a mile, you'll be lucky to get a few auto shots in before they all moving to the next pack of mobs. Did you acidentally die? forget about a rez, the other 4 in your group probably wont even notice you died. Battlegrounds? oh god, i cant even imagine the horror of joining them while leveling up without at least a full set of heirlooms. Anything that isnt legion is pretty broken as far as leveling goes. Bliz has even stated that themselves. I'd imagine its a pretty horrible experience for someone brand new unless they have friends there already.
There are some people on reddit that I've seen that commented about just starting for the first time. Obviously it's an older game so not so as much buzz behind it; but more buzz than most modern MMORPG's that release today.
As far as the beginning experience, other than most of it being lifeless the leveling isn't really that bad. I went back through a couple of months back and it paced well. I did hear that Blizzard would be interested in scaling older content like they did with Legion. As for people in chat, it really depends on what server you join.
Definitely not a horrible experience.

If you're into shape shifting I would start as a Night Elf Druid. Cat form comes fast which gives you dps and stealth toggle and an attack from stealth. The Werewolf starter zone is fun as a Druid also. I've played just about everyone but the Panda I just couldn't get through even the starter zone it is boring.
