If I’m honest, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Shards Online. The retro-style MMO by Citadel Studios – a tribute to classics like Ultima Online – just didn’t grab me. The Diablo-esque graphical perspective, slow skill grinds and nod to player-killing just didn’t sound appealing in an era of sumptuous 3D and safe theme-park rides.

I think this will be a good game after 1 more year of development work. I do not think it is ready for prime time yet.

I'd really love to play this game but I really don't like fixed cameras. Even old school Runescape had an adjustable camera to move around freely, and that game was made back in 2001.

You can pivot it around, like in Starcraft II, but you can't change the elevation angle. But that pivoting itself is ungraceful, not really tracking with mouse movements.

Are there any offical PvE servers up yet? I refuse to be fodder for sociopathic, basement dwelling rejects.

I was excited about this game a year ago, untill I learned it was pvp based.
Apart from the pvp, the concepts are awesome; such as player run shards and content and the choice of isometric view which should allow to focus resources on game mechanics rather than a 100 man 3D artist team.

I dont like PvP centric games either but from what I understand there will be servers with different rulesets. You can have a PvE server.

This is one of those games that has possibilities, but still needs a lot of work.  I keep waiting for one of these indie developers to have a hit.  It will happen, just a matter of time.

What it sounds like is a slightly upgraded alternative to Ultima Online. However, it also sounds like they didn't bother to make any real improvements on a lot of the systems. Sounds lazy to me.

Interesting read! I always enjoy @Gazimoff's articles immensely.

Even though it sounds like it has a long way to go (as would be expected), Shards has moved from off the map to on the radar from me. It'll be fun to see where they go with this.

Nice write up. I have been keeping an eye on Shards, but I'm still not willing to fund anymore games until any one of the hundreds actually have a successful release.

One thing that made Ultima Online's full loot PvP acceptable was that the economy supported a complete loss by making it easy to re-equip yourself, as well as the way combat scaled 1:1 from equipment, character skills and actual player skill. I feel that if they put to much emphasis on equipment it won't have that pre-trammel UO appeal. Can you tell if that is the direction they are trying to go with Shards?

You will likely have players that run PVE/Crafting type Shards like myself.  I have some friends that are PVP minded but they can move freely between the shards they want too.  So if you can gear back up after a Full Loot system it's less rage quit type than it would be today if players lost raid gear.  I remember as a Blacksmith in UO that I couldnt keep my vendor stocked with gear because people bought it quickly.

Wait another year.  Like I said this game needs at least another year before people really start playing it.  They got good ideas around the core, it will take time for them to get that into code and get it working at a polished or semi-polished level.

I have to say. I never played UO. never like the down ward angle of the 3rd person. Never expected much from a small studio. This game is not ready for a full release... That being said... I think this game is going to rock. I'm loving it like the first EQ . Its still early . And I'm playing a lot. I think this was well worth my 40 dollars. Unlike that star citizen . Buy a ship now game will release in 2025... We hope !

There are several player constructed shards with no PVP, but I don't think there are any separate official ones as yet. Remember, the game is still in Alpha and has a long way to go.
