Looking for a MMORPG thats single player and the MMO is optional.

ProgeekzyProgeekzy Member UncommonPosts: 2
There are many aspects of MMOS that i enjoy. Using WoW as an example, trading crafting multiple quest routes/lines to follow multiple characters with different roles [tanks/healer/dps/ranged dps ect] PVP [battlegrounds/arenas/tournaments] And of course dungeons. 5 mans all the way up to 25 mans.

But i also HATE putting together groups for those bigger raids. Does everyone have proper gear/spec/talents/enchants/experience ect? Are they here and on time? In voice chat? ready to go? are they locked? On and on and on. Its a nightmare to me. And for a casual gamer that enjoys just jumping in playing for an hour then doing something else i dont want to have to take 3 hours making the group or having to be stuck to a specific plan for 5 hours.

Is there a way to get the first list without having to be stuck to the second? Making that part of the game optional, but still being able to reach end game? Is there a MMORPG thats mostly, all, single player?

Dude, Literally every Themepark MMO bends over backwards and caters to your play style. Lotro is pretty much all solo now until end game. For me it killed the once great game, but if you are a solo player you should enjoy it. Although no BG Pvp.

I don't think it's possible to raid in any game without a lot of management overhead.

Obviously, over time much of group content is trivialised which allows a more laid back approach but gathering 10+ people for serious content is hard.

I play Elder Scrolls Online at the moment and:

    Trading
Works well but ESOs implementation takes some time getting used to as it's more complicated than a traditional AH. Guild Trade shops make it harder to trade but that also give you more opportunity to find great deals.

    Crafting
Nothing mindblowing, but it's solid. Pretty much requires a subscription however because of it's crafting bag.

    Multiple quests/roles
this is where ESO shines. There are many quests, and storylines, all voice acted, and characters are flexible.

    PVP [battlegrounds/arenas/tournaments]
    Nope.

    4 mans
    Normal content is very easy.
Veteran content is challenging and sometimes frustrating if done with randoms.

    12 mans
    Unfortunately requires proper organisation.

Generally, ESO is a great game to jump in and jump out of because of it's focus on questing and exploration. It's weakest point is it's User Interface which requires countless addons to be any useful

ESO as mentioned above. But BG arenas will be coming in June, so you will be covered there and you now have plenty of time to level up and learn the ropes of skill and gear to get ready for that.

    Guild Wars 2.

    SWTOR.

    For me, in that order.

I don't have much experience with Black Desert, but from what I've read that might work out for you, too. You could look into it.

All of these games provide ways for you to keep progressing your character without funneling you into end game raiding.

Yep, LotRO is fitting for all the points OP listed except the pvp, but why is it killed it for you, solo is just optional not forced... (just as grouping is optional and not forced).

And btw there's no need pointing fingers at LotRO's direction... For the title's "MMORPG thats single player and the MMO is optional." question, OP, literally just throw a stone in random direction and you will hit a game fits the bill
That line summarizes the design goal of new(er) MMOs and also the goal older games are heading with the revamps of the last couple years. You don't need to organize anything, the Dungeon/Instance/Group/etc Finder tool (every game calls it diferently  ) does that job for you. You don't even need guilds until the very late endgame tiers, you can join a random PUG (be mindful of Bill's motto though, don't let a bad PUG gets you down  ).

I play ESO on the PS4 - due to the limited chat it gives you even more so a "solo" feeling.
    On PC I do SWTOR.

In WildStar I keep ending up soloing because there's no benefit to grouping. This is particularly true if you choose to do both sets of low-level areas on the same character, because you'll get lots of XP just doing the quests. I don't know if this remains true above level 20 though.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story. So PM me if you are starting one.

ESO and SWTOR both have great solo content and enough content for small groups.

Personally I don't play a MMO solo for the most part and feel like I'm doing the game and myself a disservice by not taking part in the massively multiplayer aspect.

I have Skyrim and the Witcher to solo in.

As others have mentioned there are MMOs that can be played single player like SWTOR, fill your boots.

....maybe do not join those bigger raids?
  • WaanWaan Member UncommonPosts: 106
    Maybe try BDO?
  • CatmintCatmint Member CommonPosts: 4
BDO is basically all solo content. I would recommend it for your needs.

yea, would be cool if the primus would enable you to play alone all the time. aye? uh wait, they do:

story and leveling: completely soloable.
raids: LFR with about 8 million people....

Wold of Warcraft actually has that. only if you wanna win vs the REAL challange ingame (aka HC and mythic raids), you basically NEED to set up a group to challange it. every thing else is quite doable alone or in random (LFR)

and if you wanna find someone more "single player", i guess you actually look for a single player RPG, and not an mmo.

Essentially any MMO that does not gate must-have BIS gear behind raids and other than WOW, that's most of them. ESO has hard mode raids too but they're 100% optional and more like 1 hour or two instead of 4 or 5.

I don't mean to sound nasty but bear with me. If you can't be bothered with the MMO part of MMO's then why play them?

There are hundreds of single player games to choose from where you don't have to bother with multiplayer and you play solo. Problem solved.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the problem is. If you don't want the MM in MMO's, don't play them.

I'd recommend ESO as well. I've played through one faction story completely solo, now playing another with my wife together. It's so different in controls, action bar swapping, trading, and crafting, that it feels different than other MMO's like WoW, SWToR, etc. The healing and tanking is different too. It's worth it if you're looking for something different.

Sometimes I just like to look up and see other people around but don't want to "play" with them.

I can understand the logic behind this request.

Not only that but these many years later I continue to resist the idea that 5 hour raids are the definitive MM play thing. They're artificial things plopped into games that don't have enough large scale community activities without them.

In ESO I get my MM fix in PVP at any level from 10 on up.

BDO and GW2 are the biggest offenders of the bastardization of the MMO genre , if that is what you seek

I can play hardcore at times, but as I get older, and own a restaurant, I on t have time for a lot of the so called MM part. I like to be able to when I can though. Just having people around and selling on an AH, crafting to sell, vibrant world feel, when I don t have time is why a lot of people play an MMO and sp it a lot.

That's exactly why I don't do any formal raiding in mmo's. But in WoW, you don't need to go through all of that to experience the raid content. LFR allows you to have a raid group ready to go in minutes.
