There are many aspects of MMOS that i enjoy. Using WoW as an example, trading crafting multiple quest routes/lines to follow multiple characters with different roles [tanks/healer/dps/ranged dps ect] PVP [battlegrounds/arenas/tournaments] And of course dungeons. 5 mans all the way up to 25 mans.
But i also HATE putting together groups for those bigger raids. Does everyone have proper gear/spec/talents/enchants/experience ect? Are they here and on time? In voice chat? ready to go? are they locked? On and on and on. Its a nightmare to me. And for a casual gamer that enjoys just jumping in playing for an hour then doing something else i dont want to have to take 3 hours making the group or having to be stuck to a specific plan for 5 hours.
Is there a way to get the first list without having to be stuck to the second? Making that part of the game optional, but still being able to reach end game? Is there a MMORPG thats mostly, all, single player?

the bigger the mmo the worse its gonna be
Obviously, over time much of group content is trivialised which allows a more laid back approach but gathering 10+ people for serious content is hard.
I play Elder Scrolls Online at the moment and:
Trading
Works well but ESOs implementation takes some time getting used to as it's more complicated than a traditional AH. Guild Trade shops make it harder to trade but that also give you more opportunity to find great deals.
Crafting
Nothing mindblowing, but it's solid. Pretty much requires a subscription however because of it's crafting bag.
Multiple quests/roles
this is where ESO shines. There are many quests, and storylines, all voice acted, and characters are flexible.
PVP [battlegrounds/arenas/tournaments]
Nope.
4 mans
Normal content is very easy.
Veteran content is challenging and sometimes frustrating if done with randoms.
12 mans
Unfortunately requires proper organisation.
Generally, ESO is a great game to jump in and jump out of because of it's focus on questing and exploration. It's weakest point is it's User Interface which requires countless addons to be any useful

Guild Wars 2.
SWTOR.
For me, in that order.
I don't have much experience with Black Desert, but from what I've read that might work out for you, too. You could look into it.
All of these games provide ways for you to keep progressing your character without funneling you into end game raiding.
And btw there's no need pointing fingers at LotRO's direction... For the title's "MMORPG thats single player and the MMO is optional." question, OP, literally just throw a stone in random direction and you will hit a game fits the bill
That line summarizes the design goal of new(er) MMOs and also the goal older games are heading with the revamps of the last couple years. You don't need to organize anything, the Dungeon/Instance/Group/etc Finder tool (every game calls it diferently ) does that job for you. You don't even need guilds until the very late endgame tiers, you can join a random PUG (be mindful of Bill's motto though, don't let a bad PUG gets you down ).
On PC I do SWTOR.

I have Skyrim and the Witcher to solo in.
As others have mentioned there are MMOs that can be played single player like SWTOR, fill your boots.
story and leveling: completely soloable.
raids: LFR with about 8 million people....

Wold of Warcraft actually has that. only if you wanna win vs the REAL challange ingame (aka HC and mythic raids), you basically NEED to set up a group to challange it. every thing else is quite doable alone or in random (LFR)

and if you wanna find someone more "single player", i guess you actually look for a single player RPG, and not an mmo.

There are hundreds of single player games to choose from where you don't have to bother with multiplayer and you play solo. Problem solved.
I'm having a hard time figuring out what the problem is. If you don't want the MM in MMO's, don't play them.

I can understand the logic behind this request.

In ESO I get my MM fix in PVP at any level from 10 on up.

I can play hardcore at times, but as I get older, and own a restaurant, I on t have time for a lot of the so called MM part. I like to be able to when I can though. Just having people around and selling on an AH, crafting to sell, vibrant world feel, when I don t have time is why a lot of people play an MMO and sp it a lot.
