That damn WIN10 1607 update

Yeah I know, this is old news to most of you, but my 1607 update has been failing on a regular basis once a week for a while now.

The few times I was awake when it tried to do it, I keep getting the "no bootable device" error message and then it just fails and goes back to working just fine including using my bootable C: drive just fine :)

I haven't actually spent a lot of time googling solutions but I'm getting tired of this failed update and am determined to get to the bottom of it.

What little googling I've done has resulted in some "fixes" that sound like vodoo. So I thought I would ask you guys in case you have found some reliable ways to get this update to complete.

The only thing I've tried so far was use the Microsoft update troubleshooter that did make some registry changes but my next attempt yesterday failed again.

Refresh tool in win10 is actually very useful. Refresh and keep my files, no point  in trying  every fix on the internets... soft reset of the OS should solve almost everything.

Unless it's an update I need for some reason I usually let it work itself out.  They will eventually get it to update correctly.  It may be for the best at this point.

I don't need it but WIN10 is very insistent that it does. It's the so-called "anniversary update" and is unlike other regular updates. It's like a version change.

right click on start menu icon, click on run, enter services.msc and go.

Look for Windows updater, disable/stop it, then start it again (make sure its on automatic startup).  Also check to make sure Volume Shadow Copy is enabled and running, worth a try to disable/stop it and re-enable it again (also needs to be set to auto).

I'll have to check my pc that has win10 on it.  I've only noticed regular updates which seem normal.

    Update:
Update history showed it installed 1607, on Mar 15th, with updates to that on the 15th and 16th.  Hope you get it figured out, it can be a pest.

I don't have Win 10 but I've stopped updating Win 7 since Microsoft stopped saying what the updates were for.  Even going to their website for information about a specific update says the same thing:  "This update is important but we're not going to tell you what changes it made. Trust us, you don't want to know what  we are doing to your computer."

When you don't keep your OS updated, you are just asking for all manner of bad things to happen to your computer.  Most of those patches are to your benefit.

I don't think he argued the benefit of the patches, it's the manner of how they delivered.

Before you futz with anything backup your stuff up. Seriously.

Best advice ever (well, since someone told me "try this, it is called Guiness").

Whenever you try anything always backup anything you can't loose. Pictures, documents, music and stuff like that. Install programs is one thing, you can skip them but savegames is a must as well.

And if you have a problem with windows update you can always download it like a package from Microsofts homepage.

According to windows update, the last one carried out was 25 march 2016, i hadn't even noticed that update had stopped working! then again, i haven't had any of the previously mentioned problems either, seems when i killed off Cortana, it also killed off windows update, who knew O.o
looks like i will have to carry out manual updates after all, good job i have a good internet security suite protecting my PC i guess. :o

If I had a problem like that the first thing I would do is clone the drive as a backup.  Then reformat and do a clean installation, or probably buy a larger drive and do the clean install on that.  The cloned drive is handy as a backup plus you still have access to your drivers in case you have special ones that are hard to find.
