Thinking of trying this game. Am i to late to join the party

After 6 years of playing Rift I am starting to burn out.  I have read a lot about the game but I am unsure if this is a good fit.  Am I to late to join this.  With the dungeons that have to be done to level up I am worried I will not be able to join a group to keep moving forward.  If not can you just grind your way up to level?  I solo a lot as I do not want to bother others to do dungeons as I am sure they have things to do in game.

It's never too late to start playing a game, it'll just take some time to catch up with everyone else.
And with a new expansion on the horizon everyone will start leveling up and gearing up again.

You can grind your way and level up, but alot of dungeons are required for the Main Story, so if you want to progress you must do alot of dungeons.
There is a Dungeon roulette system that people use daily, so it should not be a problem with getting a group for dungeons. It might just take some time to get enouth ppl

Time is no problem PrinceDamien.  I enjoy the journey more then the endgame.  Thanks for your input

No, not too late but you do have quite a bit of play time ahead of you. A lot of the main story (which is required to proceed) is reliant on dungeons and trials. There's no way of bypassing that content, however the way the game is designed makes it pretty easy to get groups for those quests.

I know when I first played FFXIV I wasn't that entralled with the idea of having to do dungeons to continue the story but it was actually really good fun, especially if you let other party members know it's your first time or that you're reasonably new to the game.

I too have Left Rift for good! I am now playing FF XIV and having a blast. I am on the unlimited Trial account up to level 35 currently but I am having a lots of fun and the solo aspect is great. There are some group content the is necessary but it is fun to do and easy to get through, and I am playing a Tank and in a new game at that 0.o

My wife, two kids and i just started playing FFXIV two weeks ago.  We were scattered across various games and wanted pick one to play together.  This one appeals to all of us.

Too late?  I hope not.  With a new expansion coming in June I hope it still has some life in it.

We are enjoying it.  With the free till lvl 35 it's hard to go wrong.  Plenty of time to evaluate if it is the right game for you.  Give it a shot and see what you think!

I just started up playing also this week, and bought the expansion for the PS3, I have it for PC. I bought Final Fantasy XI and the expansion before and couldn't deal with the controls, but after having played many MMOs throughout the years, I have learned to deal with many different camera settings, I was afraid to try this one for years because of the XI's settings, but it is great camera control compared to that old one, although they have since fixed that one. With almost all the MMOs out there, I can almost say I have at least tried them all. I never liked the Final Fantasy franchise even though the games have gotten great reviews on the PS2 systems...but that is because of the graphics....I never was a big anime fan, but this is more life like than anime...it's like a cross over blend...so it is ok...throughout my mmo years I have come to like anime...but in the OLD Final Fantasy days, I just never got up to playing the game cuz I would see people play it and most all I would see is cut scenes like mini movies...and I couldn't see how that was actually a game, when most of the scenes were LONNNNNG. I didn't consider them games, If I play a game I wanna play a game not watch a damn movie...but I understand now the interest of cut scenes in games and how Final Fantasy started all that bullchit...which now is kind of cool if they keep it short in my opinion....but if it drags, it feels like I need to yell at the screen like, "come on already...can I fight?"....so when I got that out of my system and actually tried the game I liked it, but didn't like the monthly fees because at the time I was also playing WoW and Everquest II, so it added up, and the colorfulness of the game just didn't appeal to me like WoW did and Everquest II with content, so I ditched it for a LONNNNG time. I am glad I came back and waiting on the expansion for the PS3 which will be here tomorrow. Looking forward to playing my character that I NEVER play in other games (the small little girl character) ..in other games they are just plain ugly...THIS game they are super cute...and fun to watch. I even bought her a pet panda....so OK Final Fantasy, you are doing something right....you keep dragging my ass back and whispering to me for some reason...and I keep falling for it....so you got something....and it doesn't look like you are going away any time soon with the new expansion coming out soon. I look for that too, don't want a game that is gonna die soon when I wanna get deeply involved in something, that is why I like RPGs more than MMOs even though I play more of them. So don't feel bad, I am SUPER far behind as well, but I am a vet at many other games, so I am sure I will catch on fast on what to do and how to accomplish things, I don't let people rush me in games or give me loot and chit, I like to get things on my own and enjoy the journey. Whichever way you play, I am sure you will experience some joy as well and smiles, laughs and maybe a few swearwords, and make some friends along the way. I already have and it hasn't been long. Now THAT is a good MMO :) Hope that helps...even though I rambled. Bipolar does that. Thank god for MMOs ! lolz... Raptr Gamercard

You will not be able to experience most of the content in the game, at least not really.  Sure, you can do the fights but they're all laughable now.
If you don't care about power creep and are only concerned with the newest content I would say go for it.

Also you will have to do a LOT of quests to unlock the expansion's contents.  Don't go in thinking you can play dark knight or machinist or astrologian right away or even at level 50.

If you enjoy WoW-esque progression then this is right up your alley, they literally copy/pasted the formula of gear grinding/tokens.

I was pretty disappointed when I tried this...I was expecting a much better game...basically your classic boring themepark game.

There is a lot of content to do, and with 4.0 coming out in a few months, the game will be flooded with people.

Even thinking about the grind to catch up from max level pre-Heavensward makes me cringe. Good luck.

I disagree with this. I started playing on the 28th when the trial period started and I am level 38 now and have been doing all the story lines quests as well as dungeons. It is great to play a game where it takes less than 5 minutes for the queue to pop to run a dungeon and people actually play the game. The graphics are amazing. I am so uses to WOW, EQ2 and Rifts graphics I forgot how good a game could look as well as play. Yes, this is a them park game of a sort. If one was so inclined you could level up on FATE's and running dungeons. There is a lot of content "2013 and 2 expansions worth" to keep you happy. Needless to say I have already bought the bundle which has the original Reborn and the expansion Heavensward for $29.99 and got 30 days free with it. I feel like I already had my money's worth and looking forward to Stormblood expansion on June 20th.

Not too late at all. Because of the nature of the game's job system, you'll see players of around your level everywhere you go.
  • kitaradkitarad Member LegendaryPosts: 8,164
Listen very carefully I shall say this only once.

Now the minute you start worrying about the grind the time it is going to take and how can I tolerate this grind that quest this progress.... don't play you have already decided to be miserable while playing this game.

Instead play the game and enjoy it and if you get to the max level or get to the next expansion so be it don't start worrying about the end game while you are playing the game because it will ruin the game for you. Just play and enjoy the game it is a good game and I loved it.

If you're the type that enjoys the journey more than the destination, then it is a good fit.  The game is pretty great nowadays.  It was pretty basic when it first came out, but they add so many systems with each patch (and frequent patches / update old systems instead of leaving them in an old state) that it is pretty much a unique experience as a whole from the leveling system and classes to how they handle story / groups / activities / crafting / battle / job stories and the like.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

I can not recommend this game. I have owned it since before ARR. And had fun with it at release but quit for awhile. Have tried returning multiple times, unfortunately the way the game is structured you have to grind through a seemingly endless wall of irrelevant content that no one does anymore. Party finder takes forever. And the quests are absolute mind numbing monotony... This is no small task I recently returned and subbed for a month. Played a couple hours a night trying to get to the Heavansward content. Made it about 2/3 of the way through before deciding that its just not worth it. If you enjoy endless "Go here talk to this guy, go back talk to this guy quests" with 20-30 min party finder dungeons/trials mixed in then this is the game for you. Otherwise steer clear of this one.

While I highly recommend the game, it isn't for everyone, just as F2Plague has shown us.

While I disagree with a few of his points -- such as party finder taking a long time (even as DPS it usually only takes about 9 minutes for me) and there being content that no one does anymore (it's set up so that you can level every job, so people are frequently starting over and or given incentives through a variety of systems such as Wondrous Tails and the like), the game isn't for people who can't handle committing and going all in, as he mentions.  It's one of those games that doesn't easily dumb things down; most things actually feel like an accomplishment by the time you're done since it took a good deal of effort to do so.

With regards to the comment about quests, there is a well known portion of such during 2.1-2.3 patches whereby they just have you do busywork quests inbetween real storyline.  It's one of the biggest complaints of the community, and the fixed that in around 2.4 onwards (to the point there are pretty much none of that -- just pure story -- in Heavensward patches and most questing areas -- aside from moogles).  Though most people just treat those patches as a sort of right of passage into becoming a FFXIV player and part of the community.  But they have a lot of mentor and new player systems to help out nowadays, as well.  It has been known to crush a few spirits to the point where they don't even give Heavensward a proper play.

Some of the more important aspects of the game, for me, is its crafting and economy.  As well as the frequency of their updates and what is in them; the fact that they go back and update old systems and add new ones all the time is a step above some other P2P games that pretty much put most of their systems out in the pasture.  In addition to the way the job system is handled, among a great deal of other things.  It can be overwhelming to a lot of people since it's a MMOJRPG and there is a lot of stuff to learn and do for yourself.

You will encounter a huge list of story quests you have to do (all tremendously boring) after reaching 50 to unlock the expansion content, if u can get past that I dont see why you wouldnt enjoy the game.  Only part I hated was the forced story quests, it would be better if the story were delivered differently then some lame chat bubbles and running all over Eorzea to get to the next chat bubble.
  • IshkalIshkal Member UncommonPosts: 304
The game is fun to level once an hit all the dungeons after that it becomes very boring and repetitive. The whole end game is just leveling over an over an over again. The pvp is a terrible zerg fest. But if you like FF games it's def worth the cost to play through once and even level a few of the classes before it gets stale

What is "relevant content" and why should I care? It's an honest question.

What if I just want to take my time and I don't care about end game? Is it still fun along the way for a casual player who might just pop in once in a while for the world and vibe and some good old tab-targeting combat?

Agree the Story is the best, I recently left WOW to pick up where I left off after playing through Heavensward. I have some catch up but man there is tons of stuff to do. Join a Free Company (Guild) fast it always helps to have assistance.  Good luck and enjoy!

Ya, don't get too distracted with side quests.  Save those for when you want to level a 2nd or 3rd job.  Just focus on doing the story quests because they unlock all the content in the game (mounts, banks, dungeons, etc).  The vanilla story is kinda meh, but heavensward on it gets really cool.

Also the first 3-4 dungeons are extremely easy, basically a tutorial.  They get more fun around level 30+
