For those of you that did not catch the new movie on the home page - we are giving away 20 beta accounts for Ultima X: Odyssey on January 15, 2004!!!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Even though we will be issuing these prizes on Jan 15, 2004 - the start date of the UX:O beta is unknown at this time. Winners will not be able to enter beta until it officially begins, whenever that may be!
  • The more days you login to MMORPG.COM, the greater your chances of winning! For every 5 calendar days that you login you will get an extra entry into the contest!
  • Contest is only open to US/Canada residents.
  • You can enter at this link

    My only question is, for the every 5 days you login...does that mean actually logging in? Or just visiting. Cause when you have it on autologin, I don't know if that counts...

    Autologins and manual logins are the same as far as the server is concerned.  If you visit the site and your username appears in the upper right, your daily visit has been counted. image

    Yep image  As well as the reverse DNS for that IP browser headers and other information.  So we can catch cheaters sometimes even if they use a dynamic IP (ie a dynamic IP might still resolve to something like 'dyn5.yourisp.net').  Typically even if you have 20 ips from a dynamic source they will all come from the same sub-net (ie 192.168.*.* - so this can start to raise suspicions when combined with other similarities).

    We removed over 50 accounts from the last contest because we could detect cheating.

    Note the enormous task involved as well.  You would have to setup a different e-mail account for each MMORPG.COM account and confirm them all.

    All this being said - we can't stop cheating 100% effectively, but we always try our best image

    Watch out for masked IPs with people attempting to change their proxy settings. Its simple to do.

    You can make some serious money off betas. A Horizons beta account went for $96 Canadian dollars on Ebay.

    Again, very nice of them to be doing this give away, but I still don't think its right to sell a beta acct.  This is just so wrong.

    Sorry Glottis (well not that sorry after your rude remarks), but this is not by choice on our part.  I believe the beta test will only be US/Canada.  We can't exactly give someone a beta test account that is not allowed to use it according to the rules set forth by EA.  Note that this is pretty common.  We have done betas with PlanetSide and Horizons and both had the same rules.

    I am not POSITIVE on this yet.  I have sent a message to EA requesting the details on this.  However, at this time since I don't know yet...I am leaving the rules as is.  That way I don't have to give bad news to people already in the contest.  If we are allowed to let other countries in, you can enter with no loss on your part (your logins will count starting on the 13th regardless of wether you are in the contest or not).

    I think I will know in the next couple days what the limitations are.

    Thanks for fast and useful replay. That f world was for EA not for mmorpg.com site or people behind it. I just gate EA :)

    I got to hang out with the UX:O devs for a couple days in San Francisco - and I must say these are a great bunch of people.  Now EA is a gigantic company with a zillion divisions, but I can say that the team behind UX:O really love what they do and strive to make a solid product...many of them have been with the team since it was owned by Origin Software.

    I think there are good reasons behind the rules for limiting the countries in beta.  I am guessing the main reason is legal issues.  If a foreigner breaks the NDA or pirates/leaks the software there is nothing they can do...U.S. laws don't reach that far - whereas a U.S. resident does that and they can take action.

    Just a guess though...I don't really know the official reasons.

    That sums most of it up.  Also Servers haven't been stress tested yet.  If they get a lot of lag from the other countries, imagine how it would be with all the others.  I would say that, you're luckier to get a finished product than a choppy one image
