imageWoW for 7k Years? We Hope So to Fully Level Artifact - World of Warcraft - MMORPG.com

World of Warcraft News - One of the main features in World of Warcraft: Legion is the artifact weapon, a special expansion-only item for every class and spec in the game. As the player grows other equipment iLevels, the weapon earns "artifact power" up to and including Concordance of Legionfall, the penultimate ability for each one. It is a so-called "endless" trait. According to a new post on the WoW forums, "someone did the math" for how long it might take to fully fill out the trait.

You know the best part about all of this is? None of it will carry over into the next expansion. I honestly wonder if people really care anymore about what carries over from one expansion to the next. We honestly got nothing but a 100 talent row in WoD. In legion, we wont even get any of these passives attached to the weapon going forward.

I admit to enjoying WoW from time to time, so I usually hold my tongue on the choices Blizzard makes.. They see the metrics of their clients, and I do not, so I freely admit to my lack of knowledge on the matter..

However, as a veteran gamer, would-be game developer, long-time roleplayer, and a consumer, I have had a HUGE issue with artifact weapons from the get-go.. Believe it or not, my issue doesn't stem from my having the item or even the processes involved in leveling it.. No, my main issue is one of obsolescence..

Almost from the beginning, the devs said the artifact weapons wouldn't follow us into the next expansion.. I immediately thought, "why am I bothering then?".. The answer was that you pretty much had to, since no new weaponry outside those chains would be added to the content..

This kind of forced design really has to stop.. I'm not huge on gear grinds anyway, but this took it to a new level.. I utterly despise gaining items that have no use other than as a bank adornment as I advance.. This planned obsolescence grates on my nerves (and was a huge motivating factor to my seeking out new ways to design away from it)..

Okay so its time for World OF Warcraft to ruin itself more with features like this I can see the subscription numbers dropping again...

I don't much care for the overall gearing systems in legion between the not so legendary legendaries, the endless chase for titan forge items and now endless artifact weapons. It's made me look at games with a more traditional loot system like FFXIV. Blizzard have needlessly dropped the ball with loot/AP in Legion.

This sort of grind signals to me that the team at Blizz needs to step back and reevaluate where they're taking the game. If the game was fully persistent then the insane grind would at least seem consistent. However, now that they're going with seasonal progress and resets having any grind that lasts longer than the season is just really poor design.

    What are they thinking?

The ULTIMATE ability is, of course, immortality for living 7k years to get the darned thing. :D I actually used the word purposely because if anyone ever could level an artifact completely, it'd be ULTIMATE ABILITY WORTHY i.e. immortality :D

I always liked having a weapon that levels with you, minus making it a complicated process.

Someone is working on it as we type I am sure of it. As a reference you can look up the player who took all of 9 years to reach level 999 in Tibia to open that secret door.

The most difficult part will be securing descendants to continue your leveling for you. Of course they would need the same name as you also maybe with a numeral or something.

2087, I lay on the hospital bed. Speaking the last word to my son: Here is my bank account password xxxxx. And the last most important thing is: my artifact weapon in my WOW account, only 6940 years left to max it out. Please make sure you pass to my grandson when you die! If you or any of my descendant forget, I will come and find you, eventually.

Surprised no one has suggested that this opens up the possibility of (cash shop) boosters in a later patch ......

Guys, i think Blizzard is future-proofing WoW. Think about it. If it takes 7k years to master an artifact it means they expect you to pass your WoW heritage(account) to your children and grand children etc, etc...

    WoW will be endless!  :p

After hearing nothing but complaints from all of my diehard WoW friends who stuck around post Cataclysm, I'm glad I jumped ship and gave up on WoW years ago. Only an official vanilla server would bring me back, looking forward to more movies though!

    Couple of thoughts...
First, penultimate means next to last, so unless Blizz is trolling us so hard and will have another trait after 7000 years of grinding this trait, then this is the final or ultimate trait, not the penultimate trait.

Second, to those that are complaining that this piece of gear is a waste of time because it can't be carried into the next expansion, I'd like to point out that there isn't a single piece of gear that we acquire during the course of any expansion that we carry with us for more than a week of the next expansion. We literally grind raids and/or PvP for 2ish years to get BiS items for every single gear slot and then almost immediately replace everything as soon as the next expansion drops. I get it, this is one item that we pour most of our time into making it as powerful as possible, but if you think about it, we are kind of doing the same for everything else we wear. Farm raid bosses for any possible upgrades we can get... 5 more ilvls, a gem slot, etc. Then the next xpac comes out and it gets sold for gold the very next day. The best thing about the artifact weapon is that from day one in Legion we were all given our BiS weapon and we didn't have to rely on RNG to end up with it. How powerful that weapon becomes is almost entirely determined by each player.

I'm not saying the artifact weapon is a perfect system. The grind for AP sucks, but knowing that I can't max out the concordance trait actually removes any desire I have to grind AP and I find that a welcome feeling.

They raised the Artifact Knowledge cap in update 7.2 and they will raise it again for 7.3, probably to level 60 or 70.

With the much higher AK levels this trait wont take 7000 years to complete it will take a couple weeks.

And dont let this brief glimmer of common sense ruin your WoW bashing

"Hey... lets take Thunderfury and make it the baseline weapon for all Paladins!"

Way to go at making that which had some relevance irrelevant just to make a quick buck.

This expansion can't end soon enough... sadly, it's not going to end this year.  AP for everyone... for a small fee of course.

Kinda sad tbh, living 7k years and spend that time by playing Wow.

I know...and it was an intentional but far to obscure word pun -- inferring that the ultimate ultimate trait is IMMORTALITY! See the posts above. Next time, I'll make sure to be more obvious. :P

Wrong. They actually lowered it to 40 and made it so that grinding out AP is even less attractive by lowering the effective cap on AP tokens to 500k rather than in the billions.

I really do not see the issue here. It's in fact a Gear Centric game with every Xpac that is released every player is forced once again to upgrade, replace, or unlock gear. This also applies to Artifact Weapons as you are progressing through the game to upgrade it.

    Overused and overrated term.

Developing and moving gradually towards an advance state has somehow turn into GRIND!

How sad it has come down to this as Progression is now viewed as a GRIND!
