dont enjoy mobas coz its not devil may cry combat; dont enjoy shooters coz its not armored core; dont enjoy single player games coz they infested with pc #sjw content; either gaming sucks or im not a gamer ~_~
The "mmo golden age" (that I agree has not yet happened), will not be due to new technology. This is not to say, that there will not possibly be new technology by that point, as it may take that long. The "mmo golden age" will be due to a new approach to design and business model, as new technology will not deliver these any differently.
As far as design goes, it will be such as a seamless online virtual world, better programmed (not necessarily better AI). As far as business model goes, it will likely be servers divided by strict subscription (no cash shops) and free to play (with cash shops). There will likely also be recognition of how to implement pay to win reduction systems, such that still allow companies to profit as much as they do now, but for a longer stretch of time.

Very good stuff here. I'm never thought of it in this way.
It could be true that we never really hit the "mmo golden age"
First we have to hit the "golden mmo". With this others will follow.
Like the saying "it's always darkest before the dawn"..... With Black Desert Online and all this nasty company stands for being the craze, we truly hit rock bottom. This shows their is a hell of a big market place for something new and GOOD, we just need one.
It could be something so simple as a good open world with ok graphics that plays totally natural. No need for a Dungeon finder or anything automatic. Just something very natural in how you go about life in the game. This could be done.
Back in 2004 World of Warcraft had a foundation to set the stage with it's non instanced world, where you simply crossed into the next zone with grace. So many other things made this game natural, however some things were not like finding groups.
Understand this was 2004 !........ Last I checked it's 2017 !..... Where is our natural game ?
I used to think their was only one path "advancement", never gave it a thought but their was another "greed".
I didn't read all the comments because usually when there are tons of comments, it is usually that an argument has broken out.

My take on why MMO's suck is the following:
- We've been there and done that. -Every MMO I try, i feel as if I played it before, it is the same thing over and over again. When MMO's came out, it was all new, so we were loving it, it was an amazing experience, there weren't things out there like it at the time, but after how many years? Almost 20 years, it is the same. Just another skin. I seriously feel like I've played them all before.
I remember in 1999 working at CompUSA and talking to people about EQ and how amazing it was to be in a game with thousands of other people. (I was too scared to try the game to get addicted to it, but diablo 2 and quake 3 owned me big time in college anyway)
Getting back to the point, I played WoW in 2004 and dropped the game after hitting max level there was no way im getting sucked in to doing raids to get better gear to do more difficult raids to get better gear rinse and repeat, it is like a hamster treadmill.
I then played Lineage 2 in 2006 which was very good but the bots killed it for me and I refused to play another NCsoft game ever again (they were like, we are doing all we can to ban botters and that is a lie). Then in 2008 I played runes of magic (don't know how that happened). I also played EVE from 2006 to 2008 as well. I played a bit of perfect world to only to level 20. Then in 2010, I played SWG which was an excellent game, too bad I was super busy to fully enjoy the game. Then in 2013, I played Neverwinter which I can't believe I got sucked into that, the game had good combat and graphics and that's about it. I tried mortal online last year (lasted 2 months) and then I tried Darkfall: Rise of Agon 3-4 weeks ago (lasted a week). I also tried Tera (lasted to level 26), I tried ESO (lasted 3 hours), tried GW2 (lasted less than 5 hours).
It is likely true that AAA companies dont' take risks, and I'll agree that quality can be an issue, but my concern is mainly I think customers got bored.
I look at other MMO's and i'm like, it'll be the same thing. There's nothing new. Disclaimer: If you look at another thread I made, I believe my issue could also be related to how much I work and with a wife and toddler . I think, if I had the ability to play like I wanted to, I'd just choose an MMO that was decent without bots, good population numbers, not pay to win.
TO SUMMARIZE: I don't think MMO's intrinsically suck. I think the players got bored of the genre, a small part is lack of risks and lack of polish. I gave a history of my MMO playing.
