It's a pity that there's no way to gather a group of people who love crafting focused games and get them to design one.
    its already been done.

Wurm Online is actually a game yes it exists. people stop pretending like it doesnt.

Life is Feudal as well, in the non-mmo universe there is plenty. I get so tired of people pretending like Wurm doesnt exist because they dont like it
I meant that they'd have to invite me to participate.  I have in fact played Wurm, and I occasionally recommend it to people, though personally I slightly preferred ATiTD.  I've also played Ryzom and Xsyon, though not Life is Feudal or AcheAge
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

please for the love of all that is whatever important please do not write things that suggest there are not any crafting games...please for the love of god it makes my ears bleed.

    thanks

EDIT: also...'world class' to be honest when it comes to AAA graphics and performance with deep crafting 'Life is Feudal' is what people have been asking for.

It could be improved if it was not so slow to progress but other then that...there is the answer

I really liked what Vanguard was trying to do with crafting in Beta, before crafting got nerfed. Not enough time and money to fully flesh it out, but it was a cool little minigame that required skill and luck.

Rust has some decent crafting. I mean, you start with a rock and a torch, and you end up with a huge base complete with searchlights, 3m high barbed wired walls, huge gates, sentry guns, mines, and you have rocket launchers and flame throwers and a mining quarry.

It's no real MMO, but some servers last for many weeks and it can have a couple hundred players on a server at the same time.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

crafting/building in the non-MMO space (covering both single player and multiplayer) is the richest its ever been in the history of gaming. It somewhat sad how people are missing out.

MMO space however is lacking for sure but there are examples of deep crafting MMO games as well just not as many

Honestly, that's all you reading-in, not anything I actually said.  The same way I was twitching at the way your comments seemed to imply that all crafting game fans would agree about what would be a good crafting game.  I wanted to argue vehemently with that - but I took a second look and realized you probably hadn't actually been thinking that.

Personally I'm not interested in a game that doesn't have a fantasy or science-fantasy setting, that's why I was never interested in Life is Feudal.  Wurm, I thought had potential but I hated the combat type (hated the same combat type in Xsyon too) and I was also constantly lost - my poor sense of direction is incompatible with games that don't provide a friendly map system.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

    @SEANMCAD

Life is Feudal doesn't really amp up the crafting stage at all IMO beyond the ability to terraform and build cities. Alchemy is decent as well I guess but the rest is pretty standard. Those are fairly important but I think there needs to be a distinction between great city building and great crafting overall.

Unfortunately when it comes to crafting MMOs you usually get the same old recommended that have been dying for years.....We really need one of these up and coming games to give us a fresh new take on crafting....

Hey guys new here! Why can't I start a new thread. Was reading many of the posts in this thread and by the OP, and enjoyed the read. I am trying to release hardcore new sandbox mmorpg based on Vanilla World of Warcraft. Are we allowed to advertise somewhere on this site? And I can't start any new threads....

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to get initial population going of fellow players and open minded people? I am just asking on people's ideas on how to get the ball rolling and awareness?

No they actually frown on advertising on this site, well unless of course you pay them.

What platform are you using to let people download your client?  That's probably the platform you want to buy some ads from, to be shown to people playing their other games.

Are Auction Houses good for MMO's? or are bad and cause anti social behavior. Wouldn't everyone still act like a robot or auction house if they were removed?

Personally were I designing an MMO I would do localized AH's for bulk goods (Localized because trade would be a major component of the game) You want to buy 1000 oak planks for the inn you are building or 500 iron ingots for your smithing business then you go to the auction house.

This is because mass transactions are tedious and the idea of a warehouse for these kinds of things is both immersive and helps reduce content that simply isn't fun.

However, you want to buy a sword, and you need start looking for a smithy. This is because I'm sure I'm not the only person who really misses player run shops, or even the feel of going into a NPC shop in a single player RPG and seeing what they have in stock. I would really like a game that immerses me in purchasing my equipment again. Going into player run shops where the gear for the standard cookie cutter builds is hanging all over the walls but if you run a more custom build you might need to put in a more custom order. Getting to know who can make what you need and establishing those connections. I feel like we've really lost something there.

That at least to me is the ideal compromise between auction houses and player to player trades.

Wurm Online hands down. It is still the only game I've played that the actual process of crafting an item constitutes more work gathering the materials for it. It's 2017. There is no excuse for the actual crafting process to be a timer bar and an animation anymore.
Ive tried Wurm 4 or 5 times over the years , its a shit game , hampered by unintuitive systems ,and one of, if not the most cumbersome UI in the genre and the reasons it has so few players .. Nice idea terribly built  game ,that will never be able to escape its core problems ..
With you on that one! I enjoyed Minecraft during its alpha and beta years, so I gave Wurm a shot 3 times over 3 years.

Has to be the most tedious, head bashing, eyestrain I've ever encountered in a game to date. A game needs to be comfortable and intuitive to even start to be remotely enjoyable. I'm too old to learn an entirely new system and spent too many years of my life already going to school, to go back and feel like I have to earn another degree just to play a game.

Easy to learn, difficult to master, is the key to a truly great game - the reason Tetris and Mario series take the prize in all-time greatest game sales.

Wurm fails that miserably. the player base will always be struggling and it will never attain any type of commercial success with the system it has in place.

The game I'm waiting for is still being developed(Camelot Unchained).  Until then I would love to find an acceptable mmog with fantastic crafting. The game foes not have to have pvp. Crafting is key....and what ever the other features turn out to be I hope to be able to enjoy them.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Define "world class crafting". UO had a pretty basic crafting system even though people claim it as being great. The thing that made it stand out, though, was the market for those crafted items. The same can be said of SWG.

A crafting system where you don't spend weeks making thousands of junk items, just to move a skill bar. Where the items you make have a use and a market for players. A system where the basic materials are relatively easy to come by and exotics are only needed for very specialized items. A system where a crafter can improve/maintain items already in the game without having to always spend thousands of resources making new items no one will buy.

People get too caught up in what makes a world class crafting system and not enough with what goes in before and comes out after the crafting is done.

Crafting - The improvement phase is unique to Wurm.
    Nope, try again.

SWG had a system in place to improve crafted items, pretty sure that was before Wurm, since SWG released around 2003, which is roughly when they started work on Wurm iirc.

As one who has played both Wurm online and A tale in the desert. Wurm has better graphics and more sandbox feel, but if you are looking at crafting specifically A tale in the desert is alot more complex. To make charcoal from wood, you actually have to run a charcoal hearth (later oven) and manage oxygen, fuel and water to maximize your yield, and to cut a gem stone, you have to actually cut it in a GUI interface where you have blades and can turn the gem around. There's crossbreeding of plants where you will need to use a DNA-like system. Some things like brewing and wine making in Atitd is more difficult to perfect than most things I learned in University.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

If you're referring to this, it's a completely different process. They're two entirely different systems with fairly different purposes. One is about creating an item that has some cool properties (In a process that didn't take particularly long as far as I've heard) one is about taking an already created item and making it better over the process of hours.

So SWG had all items with a quality rating on it (explicitly different from other ratings) in which the quality of the same item could be increased by crafting using various (more than one) tool to do so. And that quality affected the items durability (which means it would last longer before breaking)?

Doesn't exist. At least at the AAA level. Unless you want to go EQ2. There are several up and comers that claim they will have great crafting but I don't trust it until I play it. Tired of the click and done crap, that's not great crafting. Plus you can't change the color, etc, in games. Changing the color of armor and clothing is possible in LOTRO but only armor and clothing. I've been told Eve is great crafting but honestly I haven't seen it. With Eve the crafting is mostly parts for your ship that I've been able to find and I think that's incredibly boring, not to mention the PvP can destroy anything you make.

Crafting has been seriously neglected in these games for a good ten years.

I would agree that at the AAA level it doesnt exist.
I would not agree that EQ2 would qualify as anything remotely close to 'world class crafting' however.
Eve would be closer to that qualification if you consider it a AAA title
