Secret World Legends News - Since The Secret World's fifth anniversary passed without comment from Funcom, many players have expressed concern that the game is on its proverbial last legs and that all attention is being focused on Secret World Legends instead. We reached out to Funcom about their thoughts on the issue and have received a reply from Executive Producer (TSW / SWL) Scott Junior.

I feel it's become pretty clear in the MMO front.. it's better to do nothing for an event, rather than half ass it. Small team, they chose where to focus their efforts.

What is the difference? Is this like a SWG NGE Thing?

Well I hope they weren't hanging too many hopes on SWL being a runaway hit! There was a slight uptick on steamcharts and then it's started going down again.

It's sad too because the premise is awesome and the story-telling is great. Just too many better options out there, I think.

I think it may be sending the signal that the modern horror, Lovecraftian, and paranormal setting may not be as popular as our sub-culture hints at, at least for a game setting. Maybe that's why WoD really got cancelled and maybe why we see so very few attempts at anything outside of Tolkien inspired fantasy and the occasional sci-fi title. Even in single player titles they seem to be a harder sell.

I think Funcom has found a format that fits them with this and Exiles. I hope they can move forward with it.

Maybe.... between MOBAs and Cliffy B's comments regarding campaigns, maybe it's not the setting at all, but the story period. Could you simply cobble together some massive meat grinder with meaningless interactions and have it be successful? Has story become secondary, or worse, pointless?

Anyway, I do agree that Exiles certainly presents a fresh and edgy, low-priced option and I hope that they'll leverage that popularity to, hopefully, inject back into making some interesting MMOs at some point.

People need to understand what "important" means in this context. Funcom has stated that TSW will not receive any further updates. It basically exists until people transition to SWL, and as a way for the development team to say "well technically we didn't take your characters from you".

I doubt that the community is big enough to be split for long, and I cannot imagine TSW servers hanging around more than a year. How are those servers going to make any money?

The game isn't released on Steam yet. So only existing TSW players can vote on it as far as I know. So yes, the changes there will be small until they open it up to the community at large. And so far they seem to be doing well enough, people are spending a lot of money buying aurum and putting it on the exchange it seems, not to mention getting patron status.

It wasn't about event or no event, but the deliberate silence. It would've costed maybe 1 minute of their time, so even less than Scott most likely spent on typing that answer, to write an entry on the forums or in the launcher on Monday, with "We're busy, no golems this year, sorry."
Instead they went into ignore-on mode.

Thanks a lot for getting a reply from them, Suzie! I guess that's the difference between a few random players and a recognized journalist

Ahhhhhhhhh, thanks for that! Thank Jeebus! That's good to note since I have been waiting to play this with my kids.......since I'm the only one who has played TSW I'm assuming that wait will continue :)

Its not on Steam yet, you can only play with the client from their site. These players are playing the original Secret world and not Secret world Legends.

I think that massive uptick you saw was old TSW players logging in to claim vanity items before transferring over to SWL

Yep, TSW is in maintenance mode. If there were any doubts before, they should be settled, now.

And the differences in the 2 games are more significant than they look, I'm sure. Probably a whole new database structure, different content building tools... you name it.

They've also maneuvered some of the newer content into the main story; bits of "Last Train to Cairo", for example, and added that context into the cutscenes of some of the other missions. With whole storylines being significantly altered, I don't see them pasting new SWL content into TSW. It would be a logistical nightmare.

Can you still play the legacy tsw? The launcher got updated to tswl automatically. My client is the stand alone (non steam).
You can, but it's quite a hassle since Legends launched and they wrecked the TSW client a few times. There's a thread on the forums, with a step-by-step solution, player-made of course since Funcom never answered the client problems yet...
It mostly works, for some reasons you need to re-do it occasionally...
(True, mine is launching fine since my last reinstall - which was only 3 days ago  )

Oh, they should be able to play if they make accounts on the SWL website. They just can't review the game on Steam until it goes live there. :)

I don't think that would have been good enough. The goalposts would have moved and there would be dissatisfaction that they couldn't do at least one thing more.
I don't think that's the case... sure, can't talk for everyone, but the vast majority was certain there won't be anything new. Some hoped for the golems (switching it on and off takes almost no work from their part, and both other games received that treatment as well), few even in a new t-shirt (takes a "bit" more effort, changing the number on the Anniv. t-shirt for a 5), but the overall concensus was that nothing will happen in the game.
Nobody expected that nothing will happen outside either, not even a few simple words about "yeah, we know it's 5 years, see ya, ps. come and play Legends" or something...

(or if they wanted to play look-away, they should've told the mod to not closing down and delete threads at least during that very day, because it sends a pretty bad message paired with the full-on ignore from the official voices)

You had a very odd typo, since those are on the opposite end of the keyboard... I'm not mad, I'm sad   Not even that actually, just disappointed.
I've seen them doing stupid things over the 20 something years, but this Legends move will hurt them more on the long run than the gamble might bring in financially. Hopefully the new game (not Legends, the one they've delayed to the next year) will be fun, until then there's still AoC and AO to play...

to play the old TSW you just buy it to play the new just go to the main site no need to what for steam to get it if you want it now just go to funcom you'll have to go to funcom support if any thing mess up any ways steam support always tells me to go to host support instead so you might as well just get it from the host sight itself it free to play now anyways

I think the game is a hit. My man and I paid for Patron status already. Loving the game. With their recent roadmap post, I am stoked to continue playing. I am at the point now where my man and I need to find good people that want to do the end PvE content.

I do fear for The Secret Worlds future seeing as how Legends is doing quite well, and we still have the Steam release- which from what i understand with convert the Steam-run Secret World client to "Legends" -making TSW unplayable via the Steam library after the 31st- or again, so i've read.
    -------------------------------------------------------------
My fear is that the original game client and respective server will be eventually shuttered, so hopefully that doesn't happen, because there are quite a good amount of players who stayed and did not make the Legends-transition
