Pure Tanks - Necessity in PVE Endgame Raids or Who needs them?

Player coming from FFXIV ARR asking:  How needed are Pure PVE Tanks?  (For example, for every10 DPS, there was maybe 1 tank during my days in FFXIV).  Some games don't really "require" tanks or healers etc.  So I like rolling PVE Tanks only if they are needed, but I know some games have classes that can do a little tanking, a little healing, and major DPS so tanks aren't needed.  I know Wildstar has Rogue Tanks and I'm sure they are good, but I'm guessing a Pure Tank would be able to more easily handle elite bosses etc?

    The way it works is every character can dps+ either tank or heal. If you really want to tank go for gear for your type tank.

    To answer your question, skilled tanks are in demand. The instances are no joke! My guess is you don't know what your getting into. Research every instance and also find a teacher in game.
