Dark Age Of Camelot: Dev Profile: Walt Yarbrough

DanaDana Member Posts: 2,415

Walt Yarbrough, sometimes known as "Copper", is the Producer of Dark Age of Camelot. As part of our semi-regular series of profiles, we've talked to a wide range of people in all departments of game development. We continue this today with a look behind the scenes at Mythic Entertainment.

image MMORPG.com: Once you had your foot in the door at Mythic, can you run us through the various positions you’ve filled on route to your current role?

Walt Yarbrough: Well, you have to keep in mind that Mythic's early days were very informal. There was no organization chart or any kind of job ladder. You could do nearly anything if you volunteered, and/or pushed a good concept or design idea.

I started as a World Builder, and became a World Lead before launch. The original guild system was my baby. After launch, I became the Live Team World Lead. Then Content Producer.

Now I'm the Producer of Dark Age of Camelot.

    Hi everybody,

    @create your own online game:
Is there any pattern or documentation explaining what a online game needs basicly for about 100 gamers for example?
    - Server(s) Hardware and OS?
    - Which tools are necessary? Which are recommendable? (and not too expensive - it should be a hobby, not the main job ::::31:: )
    - What kind of programming language? Cplusplus with OpenGL programming?
    - What kind of engineering or type of programming fits best on a small group of hobby developers?
Or do I need to search all about it for myself?
And yes, I know I´m lazy ::::35:: but why should I search for myself if someone has all the information ready?!

I´ve got some (low level) experience in software engineering and programming with C, Cplusplus, Pascal and Perl.
Does that help me in some way? ::::39::

If there isn´t any information gathered, where could I find it? Should I simply search in some developers discussion forums? Or do you know some good links?

    thanks a lot
    Tom

    Hmpf, what a glorious response

Isn´t there any (hobby or professional) developer who wants to share some general Experience on engineering a MMORPG?

    regards
    Tom
