there is some truth to that however its fairly well known that if you dont expand your horizons ever then you never know if you like something or not.

but to be fair to you, I am treading on grounds that is unwarrented and in some respects unhealthy for me to be doing. so I drop it :)
I get your point and at the core I agree but it's more expansive than that as I said above. Expanding one's horizons takes place outside of video games. So if someone ski's, takes oil painting classes, does yoga, and plays the piano, and also plays grinding mmo's, I think it can be safe to assume that they are experiencing a variety of different things.

If one "just" logs into a video game, every day, for hours and hours and does nothing else but grind mobs then "yes" that's a problem.
    on that I completely disagree.

one doesnt just eat a hamburger and say 'ok I have eaten food now, whats next'?
one doesnt just drink one bottle of crappy red wine and then figure they have experienced wine and its time to move on.

OF COURSE! expanding your horizons also can mean playing different kinds of games.

but its also true that if one has a varied life and one small part of it happens to be playing video game then yeah I can get that.

But at the core my gut tells me hardcore gamers who post on gaming forums are dedicated to gaming and I never can understand why they want to play the same limited simple forumla over and over and over again and my gut also tell me that despite me having facts, I think they are in a rut and see the world as it really is not.

BUT...its also not my place to judge

EDIT: case in point, casinos. I completely and totally do not get the appeal, to me its anyoying and unbearably boring but who am I to say those people are unhealthy. So your right more than wrong

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

The food analogy doesn't really fit. No one "just eats one hamburger and says they have now experienced food". They always need to eat and in truth, will have to have a varied diet in order to be healthy.

You are trying to equate video games with nutrition and since all sorts of things can equal "mental nutrition" one does not have to vary their video game habits.

Also, you can't go by your "gut" because you are only seeing it through your own lens which is informed by your upbringing.

You say you don't understand why players do this and therefore the only answer is that they are in a rut because it fits your world view.

Why don't you just ask them? Maybe there is more to it. Maybe they've tried other games and the only type of game they find enjoyable is that "one particular game".

"My" general rule is that everyone has their own story and their own version of what is "true". If it doesn't fit "my version" I don't just say they are wrong or something is wrong with them but I try to see it through their eyes given who they are and where they come from.

I might not agree or like their "version of true" but it's not about "me" it's about "them".

    ....
I am not having this conversation. I see how you want to do this and I am not doing it.

Watching one type of movie doesnt mean you have experienced movies, watching one type of book doesnt mean you are well read, visiting one town dosent mean you have explored cities, wearing one kind of shirt doesnt mean you know fashion, listening to one kind of music doesnt mean you have been exposed to music, and playing one kind of video game doesnt mean you have a good experience with video games.

    its horseshit.

but that said, its not my place to suggest to someone their choice of fun is wrong but I can very much argue that video games are not some magical thing in which its the only thing in which a variety of game play doesnt make sense...give me a break.

    lol...'sub genre'....not really

sub genres of the fantasy genre of games almost literally mean nothing more than an avatar change.

its all the same tired old shit, fight mobs
Just like your posts, the same old tired shit of going against the grain all the time with nothing constructive to say
I think it is productive to point out to other people that the fantasy genre is over done, would you like to know why I think its productive?
oh it seems that today is the day that you and I just don't agree and we go back and forth.

However, I can at least acknowledge that the fantasy genre is done a lot. But it's not "overdone" as that is the only genre I ever buy for the most part. I never stick with science fiction (unless it's a 4x game) and horror is a tough one for developers to get right.

Most likely others but they never interest me. So point being, I think there are a lot of other people in the same boat.
Sorry I was looking for an answer to my question not someone diverting. I dont mind people interjecting but I would perfer they at least ponder the quesiton
Hey you made a statement it's perfectly fine for people to comment on that statement.

Also "sub genres" are different as far as tone, the world, how the characters interact with that world.

Otherwise no matter what genre it is you are going to be "fighting mobs".
not related to what I was saying or my question.

would you like to know why I think my observation is constructive? yes or no

Yes, by all means, please share ...

The brain has a tendency to form a habit that can last a lifetime.
Expanding ones life experiences in the long run creates a happier person and (I find this int resting) the perception of time slows down, or rather the memory of your past.

Never the less, when people get in a rut they sometimes are not aware of what they are missing. 'talking outside of the box' turns into conversations about one handed blade vs two handed blade and all the other wonderful things that are possible are overlooked.

    does that make sense?

No, it doesn't make sense, in the context of fantasy versus another genre, at least when it comes to MMORPGs. In all cases it is just a shift in the trappings surrounding the experience. Though the surrounding aesthetics are different the core experience remains the same.

Elements that make more of a difference than genre are the ratio of PvE to PvP, whether the game is theme park or sandbox, and other substantive factors... not if you are flying on a winged mount or riding a gravbike, or blasting your enemy with a bolt from your hand or your raygun.
let me try a different approach then.

The technology of games (meaning video games) is so powerful and so flexible the amount of possible content far excedes all written novels, all movies, all TV shows in the history of mankind combined. And yet for some reason just one forumla out of likely millions we want to play over and over and over and over and over and over again. mob killing combat, with gear, in a fantasy setting.

anyone who thinks that is good is suffering from extreeme tunnel vision which WILL affect other aspects of their life.

Now to be fair, if fantasty mob killing RPG is all you have done for a few years then that is fine, but if you have been doing that for 15 years...holy fuck its time for a change!

I could give a shit about theme.  If it's good, it's good.

Lineage Eternal reception was sooo bad in Korea, that Ncsoft got rid of the high ranking staff on the project and replaced them. Then Ncsoft promised to re-do the entire game to more of what Koreans wanted. A Lineage III.

    It got an "XIV"

i agree with everyone on here. looks great but dont want to wait 2-3 years. 1 is fine, but anything beyond 1-2 at the most is just crap after how long we've waited for lineage eternal. im fine with them scrapping that and reworking it into something better, just dont take over 2 years :(

Uff I miss Lineage 2 :C I had such good memories in it. I know it's mostly nostalgia but damn man, back in those days having castle sieges and shit was the next best thing. And since my parents didn't pay for my subscription i had to collect money and ask friends to use their paypal account to pay my sub :D That was some experience. Lineage 2 > WoW kappa.

Another fantasy game... boring, not gonna buy or invest time - way too many fantasy games already, it doesn't matter how 'innovative" it'll be or how great game engine is, etc. - it's just another fantasy game.

It's a Lineage series game, it's expected to have a fantasy setting. It's a fucking Lineage game.

Ncsoft is extremely overdue for a new AAA Lineage game, the last one was released in 2003. It's almost two decades since the the last main Lineage game came out.

All Lineage fans are waiting for it.

Complaining about it is like expecting blizzard to launch a WoW 2 or Diablo 4 in space opera setting.

Honestly, this market would have been served if BDO actually had a PVE end-game, but they don't. So now, players are still waiting on... Lineage III... One of the reasons why I don't play BDO is because the game has no purpose if you want a complete PvPvE experience. Just grinding on trivial MOBs is not enough.

One of the reasons why I don't play BDO is because the game has no purpose if you want a complete PvPvE experience. Just grinding on trivial MOBs is not enough.
Wasn't that Lineage 2? Oh, I suppose it had bosses but it really didn't have an end game. Primarily a pvp game where one levels up with pve.
