Mobile game company Netmarble is bringing over a new game from Korea. They are releasing Lineage II: Revolution to the global market on Novermber 15th. That's right the MMO Lineage is coming out brand new in a mobile game format. They had a big showing at Twitchcon (check out my interview I had while there). But can an MMO on a phone work? Very few have been successful in the West. This is our Lineage II: Revolution review.

I actually hope it flops like hell. If it works they'll all start doing it.

First thing that pops into my mind when I here mobile gaming is "nickel and dime".  To answer the question, most likely someone will find a way to make it work, but I will never partake in it.

The worst of mobile gaming is finding it's way into PC/Console games now anyway so no need to play it on a mobile device.

Always had a fondness for Lineage games, and wanted to find a MMO to play on my phone, so I'll give it a try.

Anyone know if there will be iPad support?

Yeah, but dragging along the 10 pound gaming laptop isn't always practical, especially while killing time when the wife is shopping.

This is not the first MMORPG. There is Order and Chaos, Order and Chaos 2, Celtic Heroes, Aurcus Online, Crusader of Light, Toram Online to name a few that I have installed and played on my Android Phones over the years. So they are already have been doing it.

What I do not like about Lineage 2 Revolution is that it even auto attacks mobs for you while auto questing, which is similar to many web page type MMORPGs. Where several others above that I have listed have auto routing to quests npc and some have auto routing to the area where the quest mobs are but they all still require you to attack the mobs your self like a traditional MMORPG on PC.

I have little interest in it, but with mobile gaming revenue surpassing PC and console gaming revenue, this will become more and more commonplace. https://venturebeat.com/2017/07/13/mobile-game-revenue-finally-surpasses-pc-and-consoles/

It's really decent, for a mobile MMO. But damn, it just auto plays itself. Take that off, and I'd be happy. The fact that it's there just makes you feel silly if you DON'T use it. Haven't seen unfair cash shop stuff either, but it sure seems like you can pay for power.

Might work for other but not for me. Few cons for all mobile games in general: small screen with bad controls/buttons to click very uncomfortable to use, drains battery very quick, if you have a data plan with X amount of usage forget about playing on the go, neck pain lol, inferior graphics and limited functions. I'll pass on mobile mmorpg.

Auto questing ? Now that sounds great. The thing I always hated most about playing computer games was the actual playing part. Those stupid old school developers really expected me to actively play their games while I could actually do other things like chatting, eating a pizza, watching streams, house cleaning, ok, not that one. Sooo annoying.
    Sorry, I'll pass.

But it is optional to autoplay right? If so I have no issue,  but the pay for power is concerning.

I mean...it is Lineage 2 right..makes sense they'd just let you auto play it, no one live played it anyway, was all bots lol

Agreed. Auto-Play features are pretty dumb.

Played for about an hour. The game looks awesome on a 12.9" iPad Pro with all the settings turned up. However, I can't imagine trying to play on a phone. Definitely a tablet game.

Controls are fluid and easy to manage. Menus are heavily nested and you have to drill down A LOT to find what you want. Not a deal-breaker though. Familiarity will fix that.

Cash shop seems pretty typical -- we'll see.

I wish more mobile games used the Unreal Engine instead of crappy Unity. The difference is like night and day.

Oh and @BillMurphy, pro tip. You can turn off auto. :-/

Vendetta Online from 2011 says hi (it's still going strong today).  Here is an article from the same time period (some of the payment model information is outdated).  Here is a TV commercialYes, it is great.

Sorry, I'm not trying to nit pick and I'm not trying to shill.  I just cringe at articles to the effect of 'woah! an MMORPG for mobile'  like it's a new thing, when my favorite MMORPG that I've played continuously for the last 14 years has been available on mobile for 6.

No, seriously, try it.  It's been out there for 6 years.  Do we still need to be asking "can an MMO on a phone work?"  I've known the answer since 2011 (yes).

I understand what you're saying, but here's the thing. While you may know that. Others may know that. Not everyone knows that. An article like this is written for a broad audience and in general most people don't associate MMO with mobile gaming. *shrug*

Still hard to bring that set up with you to the mall.   ;)

I was interested in the Razor triple monitor gaming laptop prototype but they seemed to have lost interest after they were stolen.

So far I'm actually enjoying it for the time being but due to data being spotty in my area, I can't actually play it on my phone very well. Using BlueStacks on my PC to play it. The auto-questing is something to get use to though.
