Is this actually an MMO or a co-op multiplayer game with a HUB?

People call Destiny 2, Path of Exile and many similar games to DDO as NOT MMOs.

However, even at peak subscriptions...I barely saw any people in the hub in DDO because it was sanctioned off to many sub-channels. Where as, DDO is more like Destiny 2 where there is a hub (with many sub channels) and then instanced groups.

So if Destiny 2 and PoE are not MMOs, then DDO by definition can not be an MMO. However, Turbine (the developers themselves) and many other sites and players call DDO an MMO...so that would mean Destiny 2 and PoE (and similar games) are also MMOs.

So which one is it? Did Turbine lie and misadvertise DDO as an MMO? Or is it an MMO which would also then mean Destiny 2 and PoE are as well?

    ok

thing is..if Destiny 2 is an MMO then what is WoW? because those two games are very different and we need to be able to categorrize at least something!

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

WoW is also very different than EVE Online, which is very different than Darkfall which is incredibly different than SWG which was very different than Ultima Online and Everquest was very different in itself. There can be different style games in the same genre.

However, for many years people labeled DDO as an MMO...were they wrong? Did the developers misadvertise? You'll never see 50+ people in one hub in DDO since its a bunch of sub-channels instead of one single hub. That is the same as Destiny 2. Or are they both MMOs but different than the normal MMOs like WoW/EVE etc?

I suspect your line of questioning is both specious and a bit of a hypophora at the same time.

Interestingly enough, DDO is the first online game I bought (at a friend's recommendation) expecting it to be a MMORPG and instead found the lobby based design you described.

My thought was, WTF is this crap, and it is still on record as the quickest I've ever uninstalled a game which I paid good money for.

So you may have identified the first true MinMO (minimally multiplayer online) and I wholly agree, it never was a MMO by any stretch.

The folks at ANET correctly coined a term for this type of game when they released GW1, they called it a CORPG, Cooperative Online Role Playing Game, which DDO more closely resembles.  (though GW1 had pretty large lobby sizes as I recall)

Doesn't matter, people call games whatever they wish these days regardless the arguments presented.

that is all fine and good but the bottom line is we need some way to categorize games or are you suggesting we should not have any categories for games at all. So once the content becomes a wide and variable as the written word it would be like walking into a library with no categories at all.

is that where we are going with this?

I dont care if you call them purple elephants there needs to be some way to organize this

I found DDO to be a very fun game if you don't go in expecting much. In my opinion its for casual players and those new to the genre. Its a decent game.
