This argument is getting old a lame, the whole "this generation is so entitled".  People need to take off the rosy colored coke bottle they use for glasses and realize kids are pretty much the same today as back then.

Back in the day kids were lazy and entitled and got their backside smacked for it too, the only difference is that today with the internet and how easily information is widely and readily available this makes it LOOK worse as it not as easily hidden and how it's dealt with is vastly different.

Nowadays kids gets arrested and sent to juvie and it's a big hoopla about "this entitled generation" when the same thing back in the day got them a night in jail to scare them out of that bad behavior or a ride home in a cop car etc etc.

I swear you would think some of you feel the need to believe this because kids today are not required to put up with being beaten with belts, aka belting, and straps or slapped around by grown men to toughen em up or teach em a lesson and such malarky.

Going off topic here but had to reply to this.  You are actually very wrong here.  Today kids are entitled but it doesn't come from a bad place.  Every generation parents want their children to have more and more, and ever generation it has happened.  Children today have more things than just about any generation before.  When was the last time you actually went out and saw teenagers looking for work doing manual labor, you don't really.  Mostly that is because they don't have to because their parents give them pretty much everything they want.  Hell tons of kids today get cars for their 16th birthday which is crazy to be honest.  I don't really think it is the kids fault that they didn't have to work for things but in the long run the not working for things is a problem.  You know how many young people I have seen come into my last job stay for a day or two because they didn't want someone telling them what to do all the time even though they were at the bottom of the food chain.  That in itself has gotten worse since I started working over 30 years ago, people come in an think they can call out, do whatever they want at rates we never saw just 30 years ago.  So yeah I would say that children today are entitled.

So in respect every generation has become more entitled than the one before it and it will continue to happen as long as the same cycle keeps going.

I am not going to touch the spanking part because it is such a hot topic of debate which we stand on opposite sides of.
I would say it the very opposite, I see lots more young folk working today than I ever did back when I was young.

Point is every new generation spout the same BS of how kids today are entitled cry cry.  What is really happening is society changes which in turns makes what is the "norm" change.

Now I wont argue this can be both good and bad but the stupid argument that older folk like to make about entitlement to make themselves feel better and delude themselves into thinking they would never have turned out like this is ludicrous.

Kids are a product of our society and we are all responsible even us old farts that think things were better "back in the day".

That's my main problem with the entitlement argument cause it's the same reaction as parent like you say that wont accept that their kids are not always proper little angels at school and get huffy when told so.

Meh, I'm pretty sure potential legal repercussions for cheating are listed in the ToS for pretty much every game. Sorting this kind of thing out is what the courts are for. Not all that noteworthy really.

There's some confusion here that needs to be cleared up. The 14-year-old is neither Vraspir (an adult) nor Broom (a citizen of Canada), as this article implies. Those two were sued first. Those suits were reported in the gaming news on October 12. The complaint against the kid was filed later, on October 23.

    Here's the docketing info: https://www.pacermonitor.com/public/case/22800028/Epic_Games,_Inc_v_Rogers

(You read these bottom to top, with the latest filings being at the top and the first filing at the bottom, where you'll find the date the complaint was filed.)

It seems to be taken for granted on this site and others that Epic maliciously released a 14-year-old's name and deserves wide condemnation for it. However, if they did, no one has been able to provide a link to the Epic site where this happened. (Following the rules of all gaming sites, Link or it didn't happen.)

Epic did name the boy in the suit they filed in Federal court, which is public information, and news agencies picked it up from there and widely published his name.

In order to protect its copyright, Epic had to file against the kid, who counter-claimed against the DMCA. It's anybody's guess whether Epic knew the kid was 14 when they filed the suit. I also rather doubt that from his video () and actions one would leap to the conclusion that he was underage.

    Chain of events is that

    1. Kid streams Fortnite cheats and loads to YouTube.

    2. Epic files DMCA notification requesting copyrighted material be removed.

    3. YouTube takes it down.

    4. Kid files counter-notification using the doctrine of fair use as a defense.

    5. Epic files in federal court to protect its copyright.

They didn't go after the kid to make an example of him, they didn't scapegoat him or pick on him. They responded to his attack (by his filing a counter-notification) on their copyright.

Too bad Mom didn't step in before he filed the counter -notification. She could have saved herself the hassle of defending a federal lawsuit for copyright infringement if she had just slapped his wrist and said, "Stop that."

It will be interesting to see how this falls out, what the judge decides to do with Mom's letter (which, as you can see from the docket, has been filed as a document in the case), whether Mom is substituted in as defendant, whether the kid's general attitude convinces the judge he's just a dopey, clueless minor playing with adult toys or a budding sociopath, and whether this gets settled out or goes to trial.

Being stupid still means being accountable for actions.

The kid brought the suit on himself by having that YouTube account contest the DMCA takedown. Another consequence of bad choice. Maybe if he had learned that lesson earlier he would have made a better choice this time and not be in the predicament he's put himself in.

There should be accountability for actions. They should also be appropriate for the age, damage done (if any), and remorse.
Same thing can be said about the company, are they too chickenshit to go after the real culprits hurting them?

Sure he should be held accountable, I agree with that so I wish people would stop implying that I am saying he should get a huggle and a stern warning, but its damn sad people nowadays think that means suing a 14 year old is the appropriate action.

Total waste of the courts time and our tax dollars.

And people wonder why the USA is going to hell in a handbasket.

The kid and the mother are definitely toying with the system but Epic sure isn't going to come out smelling like roses by taking legal action against a 14-year-old. The only people who are going to come out ahead in this one are the lawyers.

You know, it occurs to me that this is kind of sketchy reporting. The wording clearly implies that one of the two defendants in a lawsuit brought by Epic is a 14-year-old.

I wouldn't bother mentioning it but this isn't the first time I've seen marginal or inaccurate content being reported...
  • tawesstawess Member EpicPosts: 4,227
Now it is more interesting to argue if a DMCA takedown was the right way to go from the start. Seeing how it from a PR standpoint is rather weak since if it is counter claimed (and given your average persons knowledge of law... that is bound to happen) this is the next step. Even if this was a grown person it would not look good per se.

Then again... We live in the age of the personal cult and this young man will have his stardom made for him. =P

I have a 15 year-old who has had a full beard since he was 13. He was even carded in baseball a couple times for it. The beard served him well as intimidation for the last 2 years, lol. Now he's playing with 18 year-olds, though, so not anymore.

I had a friend in high school back in the day who had a full beard at 15.  Started balding at 17.  His senior year,  a few freshman thought he was a teacher and were asking for directions to class lol.  He also bought us smokes and beer at 17 because everyone thought he was 30+ and never carded him lol.

That's my main problem with the entitlement argument cause it's the same reaction as parent like you say that wont accept that their kids are not always proper little angels at school and get huffy when told so.

Think you missed the main point I made.  Every generation pretty much since the end of the great depression has be entitled, and each secession gets worse.  I am an a gen X and my generation was entitled and we cared that over to our children by doing the things I said.

We will just have to disagree that their are more young working today also.  I see very few young people doing manual labor jobs that actually grew up in this country to be honest.  Yeah maybe they are doing the jobs where they get to sit on their ass all day but guess what those jobs are not around here.  You really only find those in cities, I live in a very rural area and will tell you point blank the younger people here turn their noses up and doing a hard day of work so they can have money to do things.

I will also be the first to say it is my generations fault because we wanted more for our children.  We didn't want them to have to struggle like we did or the generations before us.  In doing that though we have taken the feeling of accomplishment and pride in doing manual jobs away from them because we wanted better for them.

Again I don't blame the younger generations for the way they are because it was our generation that raised them, but to say they are not entitled is a foolish thing to say.

I also think you have a screwed up view of entitlement also.  A parent that is saying a kid is entitled is not the ones running around getting upset when their child does something wrong.  Those are the ones that are disciplining their children and making sure that their children are raised right.  The ones arguing against it are usually the ones that can see no wrong in what their own children do.

Overall for me entitlement is a sense of thinking you have a right to something even though you didn't earn it.  If that isn't your definition then I don't know what is.  Yes when you repeating give someone something for not doing anything in particular other than just growing up you instill a sense of entitlement to that child as they grow.

I am an a gen X and my generation was entitled and we cared that over to our children by doing the things I said.

    ....

actually the misuse of the word 'entitled' by AM radio and conservative TV shows is to obfuscate its meaning in hopes to get support to end social security.

An entitlement ACTUALLY is an agreement. If my bank lends me money, they are 'entitled' to get it back. If I pay into social security with the explicit and clear contractual agreement that said money is for me to get a check at retirement then I am actually 'entitled' to the government honoring that agreement.

If I only saw this video.  I would never guess he is 14.  Since when do 14 year olds have a beard lol.

Huh, maybe we went to school together. I grew a beard when I was 17. I had a pretty nice flow though..... until I decided to shave it one day, then it never grew back :) I did used to buy my friends booze, though. Not beer, though, because my old babysitter worked at the beer store :)

Yet some 14 yr olds do look like that, I'm guessing it's from overuse of growth hormones in our food supply.

At the end of the day even if Epic loses the suit, that kids parents will have to pay legal fees and you can bet after that, they will be all over that tool of a son they have not to post any more stupid videos.

You have to be pretty arrogant and entitled to refuse to take down a video of you cheating in a video game.
It's called being a stupid kid.  Guessing you walked on water as child and never got in trouble for anything.

Thing is most kids dont get sued for this kind of thing which is far different than saying the parents shouldn't be on their arse for it.

Have you taken the time to read all the posts explaining how Epic had no choice but to file suit because that is how the law is written.....
wrong...They were not legally obligated to file a lawsuit. In fact, one is never legally obligated to file a lawsuit

They have two choices in response to a DMCA dispute - do nothing and let people run over their IP, or file a lawsuit because that is the only option when responding to a DMCA takedown request dispute.

So I'm not wrong, you are. Nananananaaaaa.
BS they could have had their attorney sends a letter to the mom, I mean if they have the info to sue him then they have to info to do this, explained what was going on, threatened to sue etc etc like how most shit is done before heading straight to court to sue.

Pretty sure the mom would have made him take that youtube vid down without all this crap and pretty sure the mom would have made sure he learned his lesson.

I get the impression there's lots of non parents in this thread that don't have a effing clue about raising kids yet are all damned experts on the subject.

As a parent I say fuck this shit, they never communicated with the family in question and went straight to bully mode to try and prove to their "fanbase" that they are real tough on cheating and don't fudge with us.

Lets get effing real here, the kid didn't go around selling dope, he didn't go around vandalizing other people property then refuse to pay for it, he didn't go around with a group of other kids beating the crap out of other kids or anything ...he cheated in a videogame.

Epic and some of you need to get some damned perspective and realize the right move was to go after the ones that are actually selling these cheats to kids.
