I think Roberts will keep on developing this game till WW3 breaks out and then him and his buddies can go and hide in their underground cities and laugh his ass of at this Ponzy scheme.
Wow so many people who never even invested in a game in their lives crying because a game sells virtual land, I guess people forgot about games like Entropia Universe that sells land up to the value of 250k real money, If you can't afford to invest then keep your noses out and go cry somewhere else.
First - no one forces anyone to get a Land Claim NOW for real world money unless you want to support the crowdfunding. They will be available in game for in game money too. Like everything else.
Second - no, the prime building spots will NOT be gone in a second once the game launches. Just do the math ! Areas around POIs will be no build zones, like in SWG.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
You consider a 4x4 km or 8 x 8 km area large compared to the size of a planet or moon ?
Let me help you.
Earth .. diameter 12756 km ... Surface Area of Earth ... pi times Diameter squared ... You could have 7.983.231 such 8 x 8 km land claims ... on ONE planet alone.
>>>>>
About 8 million possible spaces on one planet alone. The plan is for 100 systems with XX planets and YYY moons (in total : hundreds of planetary bodies). So we are looking at 1 billion+ possible land claims.
Third - player owned spaces in orbit and on the ground is one of the stretch goals.
As the "Pioneer" is able to build player bases and a lot of (modular) bases have already been shown, they DO sell houses.
And they have been selling furniture ever since the Hangar module was released e.g. the Workbench
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/voyager-direct/Hangar-Decorations/Workbench
In a way the Hangar IS a kind of player housing already.
One thing is sure - it got SC again quite a bit of online visbility (and a big boost in funding).
If you want 1st dibs on the best real estate of course you are going to be after it asap. Another reason to justify spending idiotic amounts of money on better ships as well.
It doesn't matter how large a planet or moon is, if 99% of a moon is barren the fight will be over the 1%. What matters is picking the area with the best resources. This sort of stuff is all about control. I would have thought that as a long term EVE player you would know this.
If there is a limit of 10 per account it's a good thing that whales have many, many accounts. Or is this going to be all about org wars?
I don't understand why there has to be an excuse for everything, can CIG really do no wrong?
This "game development" must be one of the biggest scams in gaming history. The amazing thing is that it works and people keep paying serious money for thin air.
A wise man once said "there are none so blind as those who will not see." As much as I believe that the game will not be finished I really hope it doea get done. Othwrwiae there will be mass suicides across the net.
this remind me a bit of entropia universe landmark and the incredible price some players sold them..for real $$... i hope an invasion of combined bots and chinese farmer come to ruin this craps
All 80000 (=1 %) per planet of it ? .... with hundreds of planets and moons ... for a total of many millions of land claims in that 1 % alone ?
You worry about THAT ?!
The really coveted positions around POIs will be no-build zones anyway according to CIG.
Have fun
So your argument is basically that they are selling worthless pixel items and that people are wasting their money buying them because there is no advantage to it?
Seems like a strange argument to make...

Really, this forum bunny is a paid PR guy..... Trying to support this product no matter what, trying to give anything negative a spin off...
But you kinda failed this time.
Its either all land is equally pointless, hence no need to buy early,or even at all.
Or the land feature is really good and useful, those who get good spots get an advantage.
Ofc you will say, people just donate money to support the game, but at least when they bought ships, it was something with value in game, a good useful ship.
These lands as you stated are just worthless pieces, you get nothing by buying them now, except losing your money.
This is like : please donate to get the most basic stater ship every one will get.
No matter how you look at this land selling trick, it's both bad.

I am saying thank you to those people that support the crowdfunding campaign and help to fund this game.
Wether they do it by getting a starter pledge package, by upgrading to a bigger ship, by getting a ship skin, a ground vehicle, a plot of land or a piece of merchandise or any other thing ... everything helps to make Star Citizen. Being a backer and interested in the success of Star Citizen, for me this is a good thing.
IMHO getting a plot of land NOW does not confer an in game advantage. Contrary to many other people i can do the math ... there are 1+ billion potential land claims in the planned Star Citizen universe. Even if only a TINY percentage of that is in highly desirable areas (the equivalent of Jita in EVE or around Coronet in Star Wars Galaxies) we are still looking at hundredthousands of land claims. And personally i think they will not sell hundredthousands of land claims for real world money. For in-game money - yes .... i think hundredthousands, even millions of land claims will be bought with in game money in the future.
Those land claims are not worthless pixel items if they help make this game a reality. IMHO the people being them are NOT wasting their money. I think they buy them to support the project, NOT to gain an imaginary in game advantage.
Some information about the mmorpg.com user Erillion:
I am a backer of Star Citizen. I like that project and space sims in general.
Whenever possible i post verifyable information (dare i say the word ? ...facts...). Or my personal opinion .. marked as such.
I
have one ship - a Constellation. Never had more than that one ship. I
do not (and never did) trade SC ships for money or other ships.
I
am a SC subscriber and have therefore access to the "Den" forum and "Jump
Point" magazine. Being a backer I have access to the official forums.
I
am not working in the gaming industry. Neither am I working in the advertising industry. I am not employed by CIG or any
of its contractors. And never was. I am not a computer gaming
journalist, vblogger or streamer. I am not being paid for anything i
write here at mmorpg.com ... not with money, nor with goods (like in
game ships). By anybody.
I have used and posted on mmorpg.com
for over a decade, about various games, long before Star Citizen was
even mentioned anywhere for the first time. This is not an account
created to post advertising on these forums. It IS an account used to
share my enthusiasm about certain games with others. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If they're solely doing it to benefit the project, they'd just give the money to CIG without asking for any item in return.

Yes, but in Entropia the land actually exists as more than a concept on paper. You can walk to it, see it, build stuff on it, etc. With Star Citizen it only exists as a concept written on a piece of paper somewhere, much like many of the ships people have purchased. That's a huge difference.

GTA V cost 250M ... but yeah, crazy that a supposed to be self fund / indie developer can rack up so much cash and still delivers dust.
