Im expecting something similar to Everquest and Vanguard but I have my doubts that kind of game can work in 2016-17
I have no idea "if it can work" but

    1. I dont want to play anything else.

    2. Every time I hear people describing what MMO they want to play my answer is "thats Vanguard / Pantheon". Okay, except some people want good PvP too ...

Lol Dark & Light was a mess you must of had a super computer and you used the word " "arguably" and why I'm arguably saying it wasn't.

Again many played the game without the problems you had but don't get mad it's not going to be the same for everyone.
the game in question no longer exists, why is that? you are trying to pretend that vanguard was some great game but there is a reason it got shut down, there is a reason sigil games got sold to soe, there is a reason Microsoft pulled their funding......

yet you say dark and light was a mess? LMAO! how much more biased can you be?
Probably about as biased as I am.  For me Vanguard is the best MMO I have played.  I don't play any mmo currently as though they might be well made I find them boring.

I Left Vanguard after a short while as I to was struggling to play due to the bugs.  But I went back a few months later as it was only the bugs that put me off,  the content was fantastic.

I played for a long time then and only stopped when I had been struggling for a while to find groups. Being from New Zealand I was on at a time when most gamers were asleep,  Europe and USA.

I went back a 3rd time when I managed to convince some friends to play and they all loved it,  unfortunately the game shut down a few months after this.

So many awesome dungeons and places to explore.  Pantheon does not need to be exactly the same mechanically,  but needs to have the same challenges,  if not more.

It can work if the people who want that type of game play it. I know I am ready to stop playing Black Desert (and most likely Elder Scrolls Online though I only play that as single player) and just jump into this.

I'm tired of "modern mmorpg's". I've gone back to some of the old games but Everquest seems clunky (I was not one of its earlier players) they changed Lineage 2 too much. Dark Age of Camelot seemed like a good fit but I found i was spamming skills and not really playing well. I wasn't clear at what my skills were actually doing.

Starting off at the beginning as part of the community should be nice. I'm hoping the game is more like Vanguard in respect to the exploration as I loved that game.

I actually downloaded the private server but had huge technical issues (mostly lag) when playing it so it was unplayable for me.

This game seems to me to be a dream. It's not perfect but it fits the bill.

I want to play because of the progeny system, I love the remort feature in MUDs.

Everquest was great imo and Brad made it.  I'm going to play this one and hope it's good also.  For me that's enough, and I'm not really concerned as much with specifics and I am with the idea of returning to a play style that I enjoyed

I hope this is a successor to eq1, but I think managing to release expansions in time may be a problem.  EQ took just 1 year to get their first expansion out.  This is important.  When people finish content and have nothing new to strive for to they leave.

Average players leave way before exhausting content.

Today an average gamer lasts about 2-6 weeks before moving on.

Players leave when theh feel "bored" and players today get bored a hell of a lot faster than back in 1998-2003

This is one of the major factors of why industry switched to "zero cost of entry" as players can come and go as they please without having to pay first to play.

This is going to be tough for Pantheon as they are going for a subscription route - this will limit many potential players from ever playing but will have a loyal following of P2P purists

Assuming that they're not already paying to get "bored".

Has anyone else noticed quite a number of Pantheon supporters aren't posting nearly as regularly since the Pantheon pre-(with possibly a couple more 'pre-'s in there)-Alpha started?  That they paid to be there is questionable in my mind, but let's hope the early birds are dedicated enough testers that don't get bored with testing and go flying off looking for that next worm.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Imagine that, people get bored playing single player "multiplayer" games that lead them around by the hand and throw loot and false praise at them for doing nothing.

I was very excited about this game until I heard about the progeny system. I guess I'll have to see the details on it when it comes out, but it may be one of those features that makes the game not happen for me.

The average player is playing Asian cash shop games "trying to play for FREE"

Todays games are built for 2-6 weeks.

Players get bored with carrot-on -a-stick-games cheap games.

The industry switched to "zero cost entry", so everyone without any money switched from one game to another.  Currently they have well over 200 free games to choose from.

This will be tough for Pantheon, because their not charging $59.99 box price along with subscription.

The fact that they are in pre-alpha could be why they are no longer posting on public forums.

They will want to both discuss current in-game issues and avoid breaking nda. That would restrict their discussion to closed forums.

As an ex-Vanguard-player, right now, I expect too much EQ and too little Vanguard.

Nothing.  So far nothing really revolutionary has been shown.  Just waiting for the beta at this point.

Expecting?  Hard to say, they said sub (no f2p, maybe a trial of some sort, and if so hope it is super limited to keep spammers/cheaters away), last I heard no cash shop (cosmetic-no-drop is ok with me, but tired of p2w cash shops).

As for the game, I am expecting I guess a somewhat updated old school EQ from what I have seen.  Which is fine with me, EQ/VG are in my top 5.

As for specifics, it is too early to tell.  I haven't really been posting a ton, as their is nothing to really talk about, as it is in closed pre-alpha, so the direction is semi-set, and their is not a lot of specifics out there.  Also it is pretty far off.

I don't worry 1 second on who did and didn't pay $1000 or whatever for pre-alpha.  I backed it for the original failed drive (first time I have done that, and since it failed, guess I never have still), since EQ/VG are in my top 5 and I was tired of the p2w cash shop stuff.

I am just in wait and see mode, I am looking forward to the game, and I don't think I want to get in early and ruin it.  I may do a $50-100 pledge at some point, but haven't yet.

As for revolutionary?  Going back to no p2w soul-sucking cash shop would be pretty damn revolutionary imo.

This pretty much. I am so sick of these P2W cash shops, and I want a challenge again. I want death to hurt, to make risk vs reward a thing again. It's having everything scripted, and being forced to follow "the path", that just takes the joy out of playing.

This is why I am looking forward to Pantheon.

I expect a mix between EQ and VG.(for the best and the worst) ...

Hmm, after Albion Online, Sota, The repopulation, H1Z1, everquest next and Landmark  (and dozens of others on the ground) I expect nothing.

I currently expect something heavily influenced by EQ and PnP DnD, somewhat influenced by Vanguard, and featuring some new things entirely.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Yeah, like many others on here, I am expecting EQ1 "99" style. Something as simple as sitting for 10 hours in the East Commonlands cave was fun. I still talk to people I met in that damn cave, and made many real-life friends in that era. I never experienced that community feel again since.

What I fear most is what they do after launch. If their expectations aren't right, they could very easily butcher this thing until it's unrecognizable.

What do you think EQ would be like with:
    1) No death penalty (at most maybe ghost/zombie corpse runs like UO?)
    2) No weight encumbrance
    3) Fast hp/mana/etc regen so adventuring isn't slowed by resting
    4) No food/water consumption requirement
    5) No long lasting debuffs (like rabies in EQ1)
    6) Multiple bind points and bind stones (for binding yourself)
    7) Cross-server grouping
    8) Dungeon/Item finder (a gamey version of Allahkazam)
    9) City teleporters (to facilitate faster grouping)
    10) Some instancing of quest content
    11) No gear holes (no hunting for that one item you need with haste or MR)
    12) Radar for seeing nearby monsters and in-game map like EQ2
    13) Dynamic quest events for multiple players
    14) Everyone has some limited feign death skill

As you can guess, it'll dramatically reduce downtime compared to Eq1/Vanguard. This is what I expect. So it'll basically be a modern game but with less capability to solo to max level. You'll have to group. It'll also be less quest-based. So you'll have to hunt monsters more than grab quests. It's a lot more like Brad's games where you get other players together and brave a challenging dungeon.

Honestly I'd rather just having something more like EQ1 but with more advanced AI and scripting and without all the "quality of life" in modern MMO's. HOwever, I don't think this would be successful except in the most extreme indie examples. The population wnating this is just too small. I have liked Wurm Online a lot, and theer'e other MMO's with bits and pieces of what I like. I'm mostly happy.

What I mean to say is I'm a immersion junky. I don't like radars or advanced maps or dungeon finders or glowing paths or easy leveling. I like penalties. I like having to manage my inventory and my other things. I also am a development junky. I like gear holes. I like hunting for just the right item to fit in my setup. I like complicated systems to toy with. I'ts in my nature to get blissfully lost in the details.

But I think that direction would kill its chances to survive. This is more true for Pantheon because tha'ts what the detractors expect. If that's what it did, everybody's negative expectations would be proven true. That could spell the end for Brad's career. And I think it'd taint that niche of gaming.

I'm willing to "take one for the team" so this niche MMO can be mildly successful. I'll sacrifice all the above so we can keep the group-based theme and the more combat-oriented leveling. My greatest hope is the leveling is non-linear. So you're going from place to place and grouping and leveling and never is it like a quest-hub or do you feel like you're being railroaded somewhere.
