All I will say is it sounds good but good luck making it work.

"The essence of a role-playing game is that it is a group, cooperative experience." - Gary Gygax

Such a great quote but remember he was referring to table top D&D and not an online mmorpg game and that in itself is a completely different game style.
Not in our world. Our primary source of inspiration is tabletop, and we're working very hard to keep that tabletop environment and mentality at the heart of everything we do.

A PvE game is absolutely about a group, cooperative experience of players coming together to achieve goals they could not achieve on their own. Not against other players, but against the world setting itself.

Those who come to our game looking to disrupt that environment with a PvP mentality will quickly find themselves either policed by the community, or policed by our GM staff.

    It really is that simple.

A company can set a standard by ejecting the trolls.  Too many though are focused on revenue.  Nice to see someone gets the long game.  If you have a toxic community, people will eventually exit.  The trolls tend to stay for a time then move on to ruin the next experience.

You can't control someone's morality or opinions.  If you don't like what someone says, the community usually takes care of that if they can.  Companies can focus on player behavior though; AFK'ers, hackers, those that look to manipulate the game engine - toss them!

Give players tools as well.  If someone is consistently an ass, give me a tool to block him or her from grouping, speaking, etc.  I'll handle what experience I want if I have the tools to do it.

I kicked someone from a guild once.  We were a pretty inclusive group, didn't mind salty language and focused on grouping.  This guy kept making sexist and racial comments and repeatedly trolled chat.  We warned him a couple times then kicked him.  He went on a rampage; posting all sorts of trash to the guild website, and boards and regularly appeared in game trashing everyone.  We were able to block him using his DNS from the site but had to deal with him in-game for almost a year, as we had no reals means to keep him at bay.

The thing that really set me off is eventually asked to come back claiming PTSD from his "military experience." They set me back a bit.  I'm a vet and while I was OK following my deployments, I have a number of friends who are not. I thought we should take a look at that. Maybe the guy is in pain.  I'll reach out. I ended up finding his identity using the address from his ISP and doing a little research and he never served. (Yes, none of you are invisible if someone is determined enough)

There are some unhappy people out there who will go to extreme lengths to make other miserable and they like the enmity of the Internet. The reality in this instance is within a few months of this, most of us left the game after all the effort and energy with this guy. (About 22 people)  It ceased being fun.  I'm sure he's still playing.

People don't realize that playing evil has a profound effect on your own life in the real world.  You don't play evil then turn it off at the end of the day when you log out of a game.  It changes you and by extension those around you, inviting bad things into your actual life.  Stuff just doesn't happen for no reason, most of the time it's invited in.  So the next time you ask, "Why me?" remember this post.

Kind of difficult to role-play the bad guy when you're limited to playing nice.

I think I'll name my character Genuine Prison-Pocket.

Roleplaying is one thing. Using "roleplay" as an excuse to be disruptive is another.

Also, good luck with the second: https://sagaoflucimia.com/mondays-in-mmorpgs-naming-policies

So how are you going to consistently differentiate the two?

    The play nice policy.

Roleplaying for fun (in a tavern setting, using speech patterns in /say, and so on) with the consent of the other players around you is one thing.

Being disruptive of another person/group/guild by doing things like kill stealing or camp stealing (oh but my character is EVIL so that's what he would do /har har har) would be a bannable offense.

Honestly, it's pretty simple. Common sense stuff. If it ruins someone else's fun simply because you want to be disruptive, you'll face consequences.

Play nice, or get banned. It's really that simple.

So why make ambiguous rules instead of coding them explicitly? Unless banning people for training makes your pants tight, why not just code the game that prevents it? Instead of banning people for language, why not just use a profanity filter? Instead of banning people for stealing kills, why not just design a mechanic that eliminates it? Why bother taking the just-enough-rope-to-hang-yourself approach? You're leaving all of these holes as an appearance of freedom, but warn against using them.

    /har har har
Listen to the episode; there are a few mechanics mentioned which we are putting in place to help govern. Also more info over on our site.

I'm all for pk games, full loot, permadeath, etc as long as the game is done well. That's never an issue.

I do think that players need to know they are playing a game and that it's not a forum for them to indulge their issues.

So yeah, if you find me in a ffa pvp, full loot game go ahead, attack, it's part of the game.

geesh,i actually had like 6 paragraphs of true factual scenarios to prove this idea often does NOT work and is more a problem than the problem. So i erased it ,too long.
I will simply state that often these developers hire agencies that know NOTHING of the game or friends and family or just LAZY gm's who simply read a log and go on that alone.

There are MANY scenarios where either player or players can be super annoying and get you to say something that is on log and that is all the GM will see.Anyone that has played an actual grouping game and not these solo instance games, will know of several problem areas.

I would need to hear EXACTLY how they propose to operate this so called "play nice" idea and i mean exactly because ,as i said,LAZY people everywhere, log files, nothing else.
Ever send in a ticket...LMAO,how long do we wait ,2/3/4..maybe they never respond till next day?So yeah, some lazy half assed GM's going to claim they can fix this problem, yeah whatever.

Ok after looking into your game I wish I could say I am interested in it on paper or what your site says it sounds good with the game being about adventure then I saw the game and said I do not want another EQ tab targeting tool bar game that has no active combat that many of today's games use.

Nothing with your game sounds bad but that one issue I have and I do wish you all the luck with this fantastic idea.

I should add a true story of a chick who was dating a gm in FFXI.She got several players banned including chicks she didn't like. How about that episode of a DEV cheating inside of Eve online, then they claimed they got rid of that employee but never did.
Quite a few stories going around like this.Oh yes the infamous FFXI GM,the LEAD GM who banned a chick just because he said "the next person that asks me a dumb question is getting banned".Then he bragged about it on reddit.

aimbot cheat accused a 10 year old of aimbotting after he got accused.Find out later he was a buddy of the GM,so the 10 year old kid got banned by an asshat GM.

So yeah tell me again how GM's are going to fix this play nice?

That's how it goes with these things,  that one feature you abhor is one that keeps me more interested.

But I've learned to focus on the overall experience and try not to totally disqualify a game on one or two features I haven't cared for previously.

Heck, for the right game I'll consider action style combat,  may just have to learn how to macro effectively.

How come certain behavior as labeled in OP and posts here are allowed to get the monopoly on the word 'Toxic'? What if I welcome and enjoy those fun behaviors in my games and find the attitudes and behaviors of comments in the OP, posts in the thread and general 'play nice' policies offensive and 'Toxic' to development of enjoyable games?

Please explain this to me TOXIC people?!

Play nice, or get banned. It's really that simple.

You wan't to ban people for not being nice? really? xD Well I hope you make that very clear when people are purchasing the game and are ready to hand out many refunds without attempting to be obstructive when you ban people for not being 'nice'. How on earth do you intend to uphold such a policy it seems so completely absurd.

The spirit behind the game seems to be great, but wishful thinking is never enough.

I think I gave up on PVE-only games after playing GW2, not because that game does it bad, but because it does something so much better than what was out before it, that I couldn't go back to other more traditional approaches. I'm referring to the mob tagging.

The sight of another player while you are doing you "thing" is always accompanied for me, at least in pve games à la WoW, with this sense of hatred/competition/mistrust: I clear the path to this area and this @[#[@ comes along and steals MY mobs!
After playing GW2 and being actually GLAD to see other players coming along to help, I just couldn't bare any more the mob-tagging mechanic.

How is this game going to be different, aside from substituting the player v player with a group v group tag wars?

Here is a test of some of the concerns about the "Play Nice" policy:

Would Belan the Looter be considered breaking the policy?

If anyone is not familiar with it, look it up - Old school UO, disruptive goodness.

LOTRO players have never had this problem.  There's no PvP in that game, either.  And the role-playing community is robust.

    Please. *groan*

'Toxic' was the word du jour for the second half of 2017 and will be the buzzword of at least part of 2018.

People already overuse it to mean "anything you say I personally don't like". Snowflakes will fling it at anyone who disrupts their delicate sensibilities, countless threads will be created full of arguments about the definition of toxic, and developers will use it as a weapon against anyone who dares criticize their game. It will pass and something else will take its place soon enough.

SoL is going to get the same type of crowd every other MMO gets. Give me a break.

But kudos on trying to use the "toxic train" as marketing hype. lol
