I just got access to my old email and Rift account yesterday after not playing since a few months after release. And I was completely lost in where my character was, what he was doing, and where he needed to go. So I'm going to hold off and see what they deliver in this progression server. As it seems like it will be a great way for someone who hasn't played since launch. To experience everything the game has developed sequentially.
When that happens to me, I create a new character and play him until I get use to the game again then go back to the older character.

I wonder if this will hurt vanilla wow. Ppl will do this, including me for at least a month and it will give us the chance to scratch that itch. Then once we realize its not the new big thing we become desensitized the notion of a vanilla server, thus we have less of a itch to scratch for vanilla wow servers.

Wouldn't Project 99 and EQ timelocked servers have already accomplished what you're suggesting?
Theres a lul in the mmo world atm- if the timing is right (before something new comes out) then i imagine quite a few ppl will. while the game isnt new, the progression server is something of interest and a lot of mmo junkies will do it just to say that they were part of it or becAuse rift is actually a decent game but its just too damn much (cost and relearning and learning all of the souls) for a returning player to undergo so we just move on.
This gives us a slow usher into a game that has some potential. I personally hope they unlock all the new souls that i have yet to experience from the begining instead of waiting to release them at the time they came with the content.
At first I was interested after reading the title however double dipping with a cash shop, accelerated progress and the temporary nature of the server killed any interest I had.
Sub only Chocolate Rift with no cash shop BS is the only variant I'd be interested in at this point.
Cash shop on top of subscription......bloody greedy bastards. I don't mind it if it's purely mounts and cosmetics but nothing else.
Don't forget about the 'founder' packs for this Rift Prime. 50~150$ packs are guaranteed.
This all is kind of unfortunate when you look at why they are really doing this. Their latest expansion bombed worse than the previous one (which I thought NMT was pretty awful), so this is obviously trying to recoup their losses with minimal investment.
Well my account had all it's characters deleted. Haven't played for 5 years anyways so it's a good time to start again. Depends what ends up happening. If I have to pay more than the sub fee then my account will continue to have 0 characters on it.

There were server merges be sure to check what old server you were on and where it went that's where your character will be, if you tell me what server you were on I can tell you where it went.
im not a fan of splitting player bases but if your gonna, sub only no cash shop anything is how you get my attention
When ESO launched, no cash shop was a huge appeal, but if they had said we have a NO cash shop server I would have had real doubts. Splitting the player base has a history of issues in MMOs and co-op games. Done for good reasons, but not sure if it has ever truly worked.

Trion has sunk way to far into the microtransaction well to bring back what they started out as... there is a reason it will take them months to release these servers because how rooted they have become.
Last time i went back to check out the game, it seems they just released the entire item database onto the cash shop, where you could buy with in-game currencies or real money.
Basically, this is more or less a case study to show the financial viability of the subscription model to a mass audience. This, plus WoW Classic launching in the same year? Ummm..... yeah! This could go one of two ways.
1) It's wildly successful and means hope for AAA, or even AA MMORPG development again to get the genre out of the shit hole it's in.
2) It flops, which provides anecdotal evidence to the idea that the community is filled with a bunch of blowhards and keyboard warriors who talk a great game, but when it comes time to pony up some cash, they won't. In this case, the model will breathe it's final breath and ride off into the sunset, aside from, maybe, being added as an option to a hybrid model, if that.
IF they still have a cashshop I will stay away even if it starts out only cosmetic. Which is sad because rift actually is a fairly good game.
Trion is the most greedy publisher in the NA, even if it starts out ok.... they will slowly add back the P2W garbage, boosters, starter endgame gear and so on. It is just how they work. Honestly I will not play another trion game/publication unless they throw out the whole upper management of the company. They need to go back to the ideals they had when the company was founded when it was about making great games and community interaction. They use to be a great company then the new CEO started only caring about milking the playerbase and only business strategy became "how can I get the most money out of the customer before they quit."
And it is stupid the majority of the AA community has been begging for a subscription only non p2w server since official launch..... and they add it to the wrong game. This is like the main downfall people attribute to AA.
This is a start in the right direction. They need to just get rid of the cash shop though if they really want to pull in all the traditional MMORPG players.
Also why accelerate leveling, that doesn't make any sense to me. I want to play a MMORPG for the long run, experiencing everything it has to offer. Companies these days are killing their own games by putting in double, triple xp.. you are skipping massive amounts of content.
It's like you want to start reading the Wheel of Time but you don't want to be bothered with the first 10 books.. so you read cliff notes to get you to the end real quick only to find that the last book keeps you busy for a month. I just don't get it, I'd rather the xp pace be just like it was at release.
The mechanics of Rift are my favorite of any MMO but I don't think I can ever trust Trion again. They denied to the end that Rift was becoming what it was, nothing but a slot machine and cash shop. They used tiers of gear as carrots. Pay to jump over the time-gate and hope they don't add another tier next week.
If you choose to give them another try I'd flee the second they put ANYTHING game-affecting behind a credit card. I predict Lucy will yank the football away again, just saying.
So I go and log into my Trion account, you know just to check in, but I keep getting a 404 error trying to authenticate. That's weird. I try all the ways you can access their portal through Rift, TrionWorlds, Glyph and no joy. Every time it redirects to 404.
I thought maybe their site was having issues, maybe overloaded with people checking it out after the announcement of Prime. Nope, I opened Firefox, logged in first thing and was good to go. That's odd, so I closed Firefox and tried Chrome again.... 404.
I could be the only person with the issue, but I doubt it even if it's intermittent. It's this kind of screwy technical stuff that always bites them in the ass (like their xpac woes last year). If they're going to run a promo like this they should get their back end services working better and make it less confusing with all the different portals to their site.
Even if I did go back to Rift why would I want to waste my character that has every trade-skill at max almost?
Having different servers like this is a mistake, but rather they should allow character transfers with no RNG items aka cash shop items allowed, but no RNG boxes.

So basically what you are saying is you don't want to level a character from 1 again. I can kind of get that, but think about it.. you would get to enjoy all the lower level content again. I've done it in DAOC, just forget about your old characters and start new again.. I think you will find that you may fall back in love with the game.

At least this clarifies who does not want a sub server if AA does not get one.
