Only ignorant people think Columbus discovered anything at all. He probably should have left that imperialist piece of trash out of it, but traditional public education, in the US, drills that misinformation into all of us. It's a natural, if not completely inaccurate, reference to fall back on. If anyone deserves pioneering credit it is Viking tribes but why anyone would be proud of their imperialistic origins is beyond me.
No you're right he didn't "discover" it but he did discover it for the European power and the settlers that followed. So if it wasn't for columbus none of us would be here today in north or south America.
Horrible logic and just wrong. The claim that if person X didn't accomplish goal Y that it never would have seen fruition is bad reasoning. Columbus wasn't the only explorer and Spain wasn't the only European power at the time hell bent on imperial expansion.
I hope in New World he's not even mentioned and the setting will be in the 16th and 17th centruries or even into the 18th. There is plenty of controversial material to cover without him.
If you want to get technical in at least American History it was Amerigo Vespucci that discovered the mainland and named the landmass the "Americas" however like most things in American History there is cause of concern if any of these intentions are actually factual and dated correctly. Also the fact of Columbus supporters (including the church) in that period trashed Amerigo's name and achievements to the point Columbus got all the glory.
However the more intriguing story is that the Crusaders ended up in the mainland at an island known as Oak Island (of the coast of Canada), which obviously predates Columbus and Amerigo and the Vikings predating both. American History will always be quick to credit named persons rather than groups. Columbus however gets all the credit for the Western Expansion because if not for him to stir up Europe of a new land there would not be colonial America at least as fast as it was built. So credit is still due just not for discovering America but populating it.

I can agree that a good part of what we call history is most likely wrong, (any documentation was written by biased humans and there were very very few varied sources to corroborate anything) but what is even more dubious is modern day "historians" who tell their own tall tales of biased agenda driven past events from hundreds and thousands of years ago.

No, Torval is right, actually.
actually he really isnt right, but hey lets pretend your modern day PC biased agenda driven revisionist history based on random out of context biased bits and pieces of random scribbling must be the "real truth" lol. Honestly its a joke to put much stock in anything written hundreds of years ago as an accurate documentation of historical events, most of it is a unique source with zero information on the state of the mind of the writer.
I will give you a random fictitious example. Lets say the actual buffoon was the king of italy, who kept telling columbus you are stupid there is no land to the west, columbus finds land proves him wrong, as the king will you have your "Historian" write a detailed letter explaining you were the stupid wrong person or would you commission your writer to document" something reversing the situation? Would you destroy any documents you found offensive or unfavorable? Sorry I honestly don't care who found what but the core concept of some hypocrite PC correct wacko crying about the people that one way or another lead to his current country and personal success is vile and sickening. If you really have so much trouble saying a name you got problems and if you find it so offensive pack up move on out.
Its like all those "if trumps wins the election i am moving out of the US", only to have the all stay put. So tired of the vile evil progressive liars polluting this country. Maybe worse is the low information types who fall for their PC double talk.

Marxist populism. Just look at the countries doing and what they have elected.
Fact is:
Colonial history is nothing to be proud of.
On the contrary, it is something to be very proud of.
Not very. A history of exploiting folks for gain, while understandable from a psychological point of view, is not something that most rational folks would consider a "proud" history.
You hate saying Columbus's name? Why? If it bothers you so much, how about you try to be dilligent enough or prepare your video call it something else, like perhaps the colonial era?

That went both ways. The result of culture clashes and escalating tensions. Don't forget that native American tribes warred long before Europeans came to these lands. Look at Central and South America where they did human sacrifices of their enemies, and even their sports losers. People are people and shit happens. What you are doing is taking a side against Europeans, "whites", and you're falling into a racial trap designed out of hate that belongs in the past.
Meanwhile, it was the US (and with critical help from our native American citizens) that saved all of humanity from what would have been it's darkest hour, when Nazis and Imperialist god-king worshipers almost took over the entire world. Look at what they did, and what the world would look like now. Don't be so quick to pass judgement.
Amazon's "New World" will never see the light of day. I'm calling it right here. Amazon has zero idea what it wants when it comes to games, but wants it to be everything for everyone, and be a WoW killer. The damn thing is red-flagged for fail out of the gate. There's no way the devs are going to deliver on everything Amazon thinks they want for this thing.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

How silly I was to think that the Russians (or any of the other allies for that matter) had anything to do with the Nazi defeat. It was the U.S. and the native Americans that saved humanity. I learn something new everyday
ps. I was born in Canada from two German immigrants who met in Vancouver. My mother was born on January 8 1937 and my father on June 17 1937. My father escaped from East Germany in 1954 and my mother came from West Berlin.

America saved no one in WWII. Russia turned the tide of that war, literally by forcing women and children into pretty much labor camps to support war production and through mind-numbing loss of life.

MadFrenchie, America was supplying both Russia and the UK. Without those support funds and supplies, and the invasion of Europe, they both were going to fall to Nazi Germany. Why do you think the u-boats were attacking US shipping?

Even with this support, and the US entering WWII, the Allies would've likely not been able to defeat Hitler without the sheer manpower of the USSR. Stalin was an evil man, but his country by far had the largest contributions. Not to mention the Russian winter. However, even before that set in, the Wehrmacht had suffered significant casualties in their advance into the Motherland. Sprinkle in the fact that the Russians ensured this was a two-front war in Europe for the Germans, and they were certainly a lot larger factor than the US involvement. Rough calculations put Russia at 80 men killed for every American killed, and historians put the kill tally for Nazis at almost 75% for the Russians.

I don't mean to take anything away from the Russian people. I've always seen a likeness to Americans in the Russians. They're tough and ingenious in the face of danger and even near defeat. But honestly, you can find that among all peoples to some degree or other. Those numbers you show (I don't know how accurate but certainly near enough in the big picture) show two things. 1) The Russian Front was horrendous (for both sides). Outgunned and out-trained by the Nazis, the Russian people lost lives at such atrocious numbers. And never folded. Admirable! And sorrowful too. 2) The economic power and technological advancement of the US allowed for victories at lower cost of lives once we got there.
It was that economically advanced state for the US that turned the tides of the war. It's true the US could not have won alone. Germany was even more advanced and fueled by the spoils of war. But without us, there was no victory. We were the difference, and that's only because we were an economic giant. And again, that's not to take anything away from the other peoples. It's just the way it was.

There is no argument over the US contribution to the war effort, it was huge.
Your statements like "But without us, there was no victory" and "It's true the US could not have won alone" make it equally true that without Russia, Britain and the rest of the Allies, there would have been no Victory either.
The biggest economic advantage America had during the war wasn't because of the advanced state of the economy. It was the fact that the American industrial complex sat between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. America's industrial complex was untouchable, all production, resource extraction and the welfare of the populace and everything that goes with it was protected by thousands of miles of ocean.
Statements like:

Respect
You're showing WHY we made the difference. That doesn't change the fact that we did indeed make that difference. Don't give me that "Hollywood movies" crap. I've been around for too long and talked to too many people who were there. Yes, "respect". How about trying some where it's due. I'm not talking about *me, I'm talking about America. The nation that's not perfect but the best thing that's ever happened to this flea-bitten world of corruption and power grabbers.

Don't be so quick to pass judgement.

ps. I was born in Canada from two German immigrants who met in Vancouver. My mother was born on January 8 1937 and my father on June 17 1937. My father escaped from East Germany in 1954 and my mother came from West Berlin.

Why do you think the u-boats were attacking US shipping?

"Meanwhile, it was the US (and with critical help from our native American citizens) that saved all of humanity from what would have been it's darkest hour"
Makes it sound like you watch way too many Hollywood movies.
