I just don't get some people. You all are celebrating this like it's a good thing for the game. All I could think as I read the OP was he must be trolling. If this is true, then that's bad for the game.
I've seen free loot boxes in other games. You get some pretty nice things, including gear for no effort at all. The game was perfectly fine when it released regarding difficulty, yet they nerfed it. Now they're passing out free loot. I guess most people here used the console command to get loot in The Elderscrolls games.
Yes because no MMO ever has had you walk to your trainer when you ding to be showered with rewards lol. Is it that they're skipping the "walk to your trainer" part that isn't hardcore enough for you?
Also... "Rewards for the Worthy" mail from the Cyrodiil campaign has been wanting to have a word with you since launch.
You're going to have to explain yourself better, because you're not making any sense to me. What does walking to a trainer have to do with loot boxes or ESO? You've never had to do that in ESO. Other MMORPG's, mainly eastern ones, do have loot boxes at level up. I view it as a carrot to entice people to keep grinding in their, otherwise, very shallow games. ESO is not a shallow game and exploration is fun all on its own. I'm normally surprised when I level because I'm sucked into the exploration and content in that game. I look forward to getting a lucky drop from a mob or dungeon, or to my quest rewards, or even to what I can craft. You pass out free loot in loot boxes and you take away part of the reward for adventuring.

You're the one who apparently doesn't understand by making this about loot boxes. As far as I'm aware there is only one loot box given out as a reward at some level... level 20 I think. And yes, that one is a tacky reward given out as part of their recent campaign to get more people started with loot boxes by giving some away for free... as they are doing this very week with a loot box per day to anyone with ESO+ just for logging in.
Everything else you get from the new level up rewards is not a loot box. It's a preset item or items or gold with no RNG involved that is no different than what a quest would give you. Except better in some ways because for the first time ever you can actually choose which weapon from a list of several and because also for the first time ever you can earn a horse in the game by just leveling up to level 10. Those are good things and railing against that just sounds like crazy shit.
I don't like loot boxes either and I think they're offensive and tacky pieces of shit that cheapen the game. I've gotten plenty of shit from the corporate fanboi crowd here over the years for saying just that and more about their great "chapter" DLC switcharoo last year.
But this is not about loot boxes. It's just level-up rewards.

Level up rewards is the same as a free loot box upon level up in other games. Either way, it's a freebee that takes away from the reward system already in place. The system already in place rewards you for crafting, exploring, questing, and other adventures while naturally playing the game. Level up rewards will just make the content that much easier than it already is by giving you an item that's better than you'd naturally have at that level. They already nerfed the base game a while ago when it was challenging enough at that time to keep me engaged in the game. Now you can breeze through things easily. Now they're adding free items at level up? Sounds rediculous and unwarranted IMO and I am entitled to my own opinion on this. We can just agree to disagree at this point.
They sounds great. I'll have to roll up another character.
Any news on the supposed combat / animation changes?
I haven't heard anything about animation changes on this or any upcoming updates and this update has the least amount of skill changes of any recent update.
The most significant combat ability changes are that they reduced how much you're slowed when using cast-time or channeled abilities by half, made synergies easier to activate by making their activation radius larger and taken them off the GCD, and made AOE damage have full effect on any targets in the area (not just the first 6 at full damage and more than that at reduced damage as it is now.) Other than that there are a handful of minor tweaks here and there but nothing big.
It was in a previous article on this website not long ago.
I hate to say this but there was an article about combat changes a loooong time ago. Meaning, I think they already happened.
It was about this particular patch. Maybe whoever did the article was mistaken.
I created 8 characters for ESO, but only ever played 1 & that was to 173 Champion Points before tiring of the grinding.
These purposed features interests me enough where I might make more of a return to playing ESO than logging in about every other day to upgrade a mount skill.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for these additions & wait & see.

I can kind of see where you are coming from, but its not really comparable to the nerfing of content that has occurred in the past imo.
I think this will help new players get used to the game and that will be a boon for everyone. The rewards will also be nice for leveling alts, which I normally just do by grinding dolmens anyway.
They need to explain the AH system to new players better imo, that had me bamboozled for ages since it is so different from other mmos.
FYI... I just booted up the PTS for the first time since this Monday's patch and they've highlighted the skills on the selected skill adviser build much better. They dropped the 2nd thin border and instead highlighted the corners with a much thicker border.
It's dead simple seeing the recommended skills at a glance now.

Ok this probably my last post in this thread with just a friendly PSA for anyone, especially someone new to the game, if you're thinking of using the build adviser to help them create a build.
Stay away from the default new player template
It has a major flaw that actually works against steering new players correctly. That flaw is that in its attempt to be basic it neglects to steer you toward the correct weapon and armor to use.
All the other templates recommends skills to take in your class, weapon and armor skill lines and they do a fairly good job of recommending the right skills. Use one of those instead. There is nothing particularly expert about those builds and they will in fact work better for a new player,
Weapon and armor skills are very important, especially early on, to choose properly or you'll be starting out with some severe handicaps. The armor passives that are unlocked early make all the difference in the world to how often you can use skills instead of just light attacking or heavy attacking and skills are >> than those basic attacks. It's those passives that reduce the cost of your abilities and how fast your resource pools regenerate.
Likewise depending on what type of character you're trying to build some weapons work best with magicka based builds (destruction and restoration staves) and some work best for stamina builds (bows, 2HD, dual wield.)
I guess they decided not to recommend armor and weapons for the basic build to feature ESOs ability to mix and match things more. That's IMO, the wrong way to introduce players to the game since mixing and matching can lead you astray more easily than it can give you good results. That openness is actually a bit more advanced than the other templates that guide you more.
Try a Warden (if you have Morrowind), Templar or Sorcerer magicka damage dealer first, Those are probably the 3 most beginner friendly builds.

... or maybe we should just read the skill descriptors and decide which one's are most beneficial. It's really not that complicated. IMHO, the addition of this skill advisor is totally unnecessary. The game has been out for almost four years now and player's have done quite well without it. Does anyone else think this is has been so complicated an issue requiring the implementation of a "Skill Advisor?" I don't know, perhaps I am giving players too much credit and they do need help lol.

All you have to do is level an alt, play with the new players and take a look around you. That should tell you in one evening whether it's needed or not.
It is.

I'll take your word for it.
I'll tell you three areas that are in more dire need that could have better used the development resources than this "Skill Advisor" update;
1. A display of better letting a player know the skill morph options ahead of time, and prior to choosing a skill so that a player can plan ahead to a morph they can look forward to acquiring.
2. The improvement of the quick slot mechanic.
3. A better implementation of the Auction House. It is a system that renders new players as strictly consumers with no means by which to, in turn, post their wares for sale. Sure one can join a trading guild ... provided they event want to or have the means by which to pay guild trading fees which most new players would not be able to afford. I won't get into it in this post but there are many ways to improve the AH that would be better served the players base than the current implementation.
Again, love the game but the above areas could use some love.
