I've tried it about 4 times since its public alpha, and every single time it has been absolutely TERRIBLE. I will try it again on launch just to say I gave Richard Garriot the proper respect he earned from ancient times, but I think this will be the last time I support a Garriot game. Not much hope here that this project has a chance of success.

I disagree, there is something pure about SoTA, it feels like a real mmo, it feeels traditional , and has a ton of sandbox elements.
Pure MMO? It is a game of a million loading screens. I never seen a game so instanced. This game is launched for intense and purposes.

Game launched in 2016 when it went full persistent. There's can be no denying it either when you have players with crafting skills and combat skills leveled so high that it will take new players years and years of dedicated grinding to get to where those players are right now. Kicker is these players in game now will never be caught. The skill system is capless so they will always have the advantage.

I don't know why people call this game a sandbox or a MMO. The adventure scenes are dedicated for grinding and the housing scenes are gated. You can buy deeds and houses from the cash shop or risk RMT and buy from another player with paypal or bitcoin or sthg like that. The MMO perception doesn't make sense because the game is so empty and the instanced scenes can only handle a few dozen players at a time and there will still be hitching and load screens.
Each to their own. It's pure sthg, and that's why I say people should try the F2P option first. If you buy it Steam only gives you a couple hours to try it out before you lose your chance for a refund. Try the F2P option first before you buy, there is so much confusion being propagated about this game from their developers.f Just yesterday Lord British wrote in a forum post that the game isn't a MMO, but that they call it a MMO for marketing. Read that to mean the guy that created the game doesn't even know if it's a MMO or not.

There are still people who play games before launch and then complain that the pre-launch game is buggy? If you care about bugs, then at minimum, wait for the game to launch. And if people say that the game is still buggy at launch, then wait longer until people say that it isn't so buggy anymore. Or if people still say it's horribly buggy years past launch, then just don't play the game. It's not like this is the only game in the world and the only alternatives are watching grass grow or watching paint dry.
All you negative trolls on here bashing to be bashing. Go on if you don't like the game. Why do you obsess with it so much if you don't like it? Most of the negative comments on these SotA threads are from uninformed people or those who didn't give it much chance. Just reading the tripe being talked about and what actually is happening in the game are two completely different things.
The game has *NOT* launched yet. It is still an early access game and is not finished. They have very set goals to reach before the game is actually released and they have been pouring in tons of content and updates to get to that point. You can visit their site and read all the stuff they put in every update, esp R41-R51 https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/?p=80681#Schedule
It's a good game but seems the same trolls want to bash away here. It may not be the game for you but just because you played for a couple of hours back in R14 of the game in 2014 doesn't mean it hasn't vastly changed over the years to the state it is in now. They are constantly listening to the players and implementing new things as well as working on their backer promises to be ready in Episode 1 at launch.
There are tons of new players everyday. I've been seeing new faces and friending as many as I can as well as recruiting for new players. The game is not an easy hack n slash and has a learning curve, especially with changes occurring all the time as we get closer to launch, so it helps getting to know people in the community and joining friendly guilds to help you out as you start.
It's not you're typical mmo/single player/mp rpg type game. It's a hybrid and I believe that is one of the unique qualities they wanted to embrace in the game. If you want a world with thousands of people in one zone/instance. This is probably not the game for you. There are hundreds of players on at any given time. This is the current standard population. You can see everyone on your friend's list if they are on, in MP mode or single player mode and their locations. You can see all those around you as well, especially in the overworld map, if you have your "nearby players" list open as well.
For those that are mad about players having housing before you... really? That's what you're going to get mad at? Those spots change hands all the time. Sure, some for money. Some for better spots that pop up. People are always moving around and changing towns/cities, and will continue to do so as they continue to add content and new cities.
They keep upgrading the combat systems so it just gets better over time. The crafting systems is one of the better ones in MMO's atm. Sure, I still prefer old Star Wars Galaxies craft systems, but as it is with what's out there, this is pretty good. Very player economy focused and driven. The housing systems, decorations, ability to get loot or craft your own items to decorate your houses/towns is the best out there and it's been the best for a very long while. Graphics keep updating to look even better, esp if you can support 4K+ and turn on saturation for great lighting effects and colors. Default seems a bit muted to have a medieval story look, but turn up your settings and the game looks amazing. If you don't have the hardware to see it or cant run with specs turned up, that does not make the game bad or the graphics bad. That's a user issue.
The game has telethon events to win prizes and donate for store items all the time. Last one a few days ago raised over $110k. Players that donated at least $5 got all of the 13 stretch goal items (limited goods). Plenty of old school players from the days of Ultima Online and EQ are still playing in Shroud of the Avatar, even some of the old guilds and player towns from then are over there. They have events all the time and broadcast live. Plenty of life in the game if you know where to look.
If you don't like a game that constantly is changing prior to launch and has a long list of goals and layer input to add to the game, then by all means, carry on and march elsewhere. No need to try and bring your misery to everyone else because something "hurt your feelings". Let others give it a fair try and see for themselves.
The problem is that the game is launched. They give you due warning that the game is not in a state that should be considered as a launched game. But when you wait till what they call the official launch, new players will be confronted with a community that has a headstart of several years.
Honestly, I backed this when it was first announced just to see how it would turn out. I think I bought the 40 dollar tier, and at some point some alienware promotion gave me an additional 20 dollars towards the 60 tier. I played it a couple times so far, and have been pretty underwhelmed, and I've not really followed much of the progression of the actual game, but from what I understand all of the land costs real money which turns me off quite a bit from the game. But on launch I'll give it a shot again, just because I want to believe there is something there, especially with all of the cool sounding parts of the game. I wish Garriot wasn't such a dolt, but at the same time he has some okay ideas.
I expected more since the Ultima games were my youth enjoyment, but this was rather dissapointing.
I will maybe try it again if it has a free trial, but from the time i did play it i was not very impressed at all, it was dull, boring and lacking in many ways. (that is without counting any of the bugs at the time as those were expected to be in game). Its just the game was boring and dull. I would go so far as saying that not 1 but 2 deceased games were better but died due to lack of interest (Warhammer online and Tabula Rasa).

The game never launched. You gain early access as a backer to play but it's still a WIP and they tell you that. They have a launch date set already and have been working towards that.
And so what if you play a game where others have had more time before you? That's like that with any game you decide to play after launch. What, you want to just play only at release with games so you can have that feeling of being the best at something for all of 10 minutes until someone surpasses you?
What exactly is game killing about those players that have been around a while?
I'm gonna wait a bit until after launch and see what happens. It's hard for me to take the 'game sucks because of bugs' argument during beta. That's the purpose of beta... to iron out the bugs. Once game launches and they iron out the launch festivities, I'll keep an eye out.

I have never played it nor will I give it a try at launch, but at post launch plus one year, perhaps.
All depends how well it is doing at the time.

Yes. I think I might buy some, take it to China, get him cloned and see if a younger version of himself can dish out some decent games in a few years.
And silly me had already purchased it. Found out the first time I logged in how horrid the instancing was.
I really cannot begin to comprehend how or why anyone would think the world / instancing of this game was a good idea. It's just absolutely stupid.
"Official launch" with characters and progression and land plots that have been around for over a year sounds about right for this game.
