Its kind of unfortunate that some people dont see the long game to this (of course to some that doesn't matter), but to be short to the point, remember AA fresh starts were fun too. What happened to them? Why wont that happen here? Easy answer is it will.
I didn't enjoy AA at launch so fresh starts were uninteresting. I *did* enjoy vanilla Rift and although this isn't it, it's probably about as close as I can get. I don't look at it as a long-term game because... Trion. But I'll pay and play up until that stops.
There is a sucker born every day, that line still holds true i guess. Thralls of people lining up to play the same game they tried and didnt like 5 years ago lol. With in 1 month it will be a ghost town and all of the hearty clapping people praising this "new old car shine" will not return to this post to detail just how wrong they were and how fast they became bored.

Ruvan - Eth Mage. I'm in Stonefield right now.
I queued up for a dungeon last night and DD popped and that didn't go well. Boos 1 cleaved through the tank like they were a squishy. I might have to go healer just to get a decent queue time.
Warriors are a bit gimped right now. All the other tanks I have talked to have been complaining. Yet I guess that is expected (balancing I mean) Yet right now we are struggling a bit lol
I'm having a blast as rogue tank. In one dungeon with the first boss 2 adds who hit really hard, our warr tank (lvl 28 couldnt take it) so I said can I try (level 23/24 I think). And face tanked them.
But I got so many shadowstep aoe agro pulls feels really awesome
Uhm you know you can do all of that in the current live game and ten times more lol, sigh the placebo effect is real. Let us know about the blast you are having in 2 weeks. Don't get me wrong i am glad you are having fun, but its misleading to suggest somehow this is some new fresh gaming experience. This is rift, its a worse version than the f2p you have always been able to play but chose not to play, yet you are now paying to play it heh, its amazing truly amazing
To me, it's like it's the surge in population that makes it so much fun.. and the thought of the cash shop not holding you back.
The question is, why is this better than the real servers? No reason really. There's less content and less features. If people stuck with the game the proper servers would be just as much, if not more, fun.
Population is definitely a major draw card but for some its also curiosity - how content will roll out and being a noob again in a familiar setting. Worrying about bag space again is just so adorable lol

The only thing that I agree with what you said, is that it's a worse version of the f2p servers. I honestly never felt that Rift was p2w. People only gave weak reasons, like the locked earrings slots (I paid 600g on the AH for them). They also mentioned the paid souls; I was fine with my rogue with the free souls. So where is the p2w in that?
Some people like a subscription based game, for me, no. I'm fine with the free to play version of Rift. I enjoyed all of the new zones and the new content. I don't understand the appeal of vanilla this and vanilla that. Some change is good, especially when it comes to MMOs. Nostalgia is very short-lived, for me at least.

They using that hyped to make a few bucks before the game really dies...
Really??? I haven't talked to anyone whose logged into Prime that isn't having fun. I think they are testing other avenues of making a Prime membership more worthwhile!
Well, duh. Give it until the first month is over and we will see how quickly it dies. Just like how Rift is dying and this was a desperate way to get money rather then actually make their game better. If they really wanted to be bold, they would have made a "normal" server with NO cash shop at all that requires a sub.
I would explain it to you, but it is obvious you wouldn't be able to understand. Just like every other hatejunkie that I have been hearing since 2012, I will ask you to come back in another few years and post again about how its on its death bed.
Rift has made mistakes, they have done things wrong. No doubt they have lost players. However Rift has a core that is still on live and they have an avid fan base that is trying out Prime. It is way to early to tell if it will be enjoyed 1 year from now, but at this time it is enjoyable to most.
Prime server is trying to re-sell me the turtle mount in the "limited cash shop" that I got by buying the collector's edition of the game when it came out. That's how greedy they are but it really did not surprise me.
Anyone paying $15 a month for Prime for TWO classes should really think about what they can get on the live server for the same amount of money. For a $15 one time fee on live you can buy the primalist pack that has like 6 classes you can play whenever you like cause there's no sub required.
Do yourself a favor and play on the main server cause in 2-3months or less prime server will be empty and your character(s) will be stuck there. If you don't like the cash shop on main just ignore it like I've done for many years.
Having a good time right now. I find it funny that everyone bitches about cash shops, and now a lot of the same people are bitching about a sub. They gotta make money somehow.
It's not about cash shops in general. It's the fact that Trion makes all their cash shops full of P2W crap.
I was going to try Rift but then i changed my mind after i was searching info about the game.
I wanted to play cleric but apparently they aren't the best healers in game at the moment which seems strange since they're clerics and apparently the class hasn't had any changes for nearly a year.
I don't know how the classes work but seems like every class can do different roles, I read some where that Rogues are good at healing at the moment. lol
I was also put off with every time i was looking for a build people kept talking about macros like you needed to use them to play a class to it's full potential and i won't use them just because it's associated with botting.
The other thing was because i hadn't played the game before and it seems they have this yearly plan, I just thought they would be adding new content to quickly for someone who hadn't played the game before.
I'm not on Prime yet (i'm waiting a week to see how population retention holds). But to address your statement, you're misleading yourself without knowing context.
Cleric's aren't the best healers on the current content servers where there's extra universal souls like primalist and other factors including gear. The Prime server classes and such are based on their balances and souls from when the game released (which is why warriors are under-performing as tanks, just like release). So unless you're reading information that was available when the game first came out. You're not reading accurate information in regards to the Prime server.
Macro's are not required for Prime, as the levels and skills available make for less abilities to use and manage compared to current content.
And the current Prime server is not a progression server. It will release non-expansion content and events over the next year. But there's no plans currently to add any additional content that came from expansions or their following content patches. So this is literally the best way to experience the game without being overwhelmed.
I hope this puts some of your concerns/issues to rest.

Brassedwarf said in chat the other day that it is a progression server. She even went into detail about how content is going to be released for about 10 minutes while all along saying that it is a progression server.

Well they have to start releasing the expansion and content updates over time or people will end up bored and leaf the Prime server.
As long as they keep the P2W part out of the Cash Shop, they should be fine and sustain a good population over time.
I think after the latest loot box scandals and political discussions around it, that people slowly start to realize how terrible, predatory and immoral the F2P model really is.
I rather have a monthly subscription and full access to a "fun" game and all it's content, instead of those so called F2P garbage games that are developed from the ground up to make you suffer with hidden pay walls, XP and combat modifiers, etc unless you keep spending a ton of money in the cash shop! /shrug
To me, it's like it's the surge in population that makes it so much fun.. and the thought of the cash shop not holding you back.
The question is, why is this better than the real servers? No reason really. There's less content and less features. If people stuck with the game the proper servers would be just as much, if not more, fun.
Prime is far more appealing than Live because of how Trion decided to monetize the Live game, it's the main reason Prime is a thing in the first place.

I expect a lot of people are on Prime because the cash shop is almost non existent. People on live are worried they'll get abandoned because of Prime but the live game is almost dead - I think Trion should be focussing on Prime as the game's future and working from there.

It shouldn't take people long to realize the monetization model of a game isn't really that important, it's all about the gameplay.
I found it lacking at launch when it was a sub only game and relaunching it as a sub only game doesn't change that.
People forget, Trion converted it to F2P because everyone stopped subbing, and not the other way around.

I think the reason a players are interested is the lack of shop. So for them the cost is not that relevant and not comparable to whatever some shop could get them - They are paying for not having a shop in the first place, that is how much a lot of players dislike f2p and that group keep growing every day.

Not just that, but to experience low level zones that are packed with people!
Like any aging MMO, on Live the low level zones are barren waste lands, where you have to skip half of the interesting content (like Rifts, etc) because almost everyone is at the level cap.
I was going to try Rift but then i changed my mind after i was searching info about the game.

I am pretty sure cleric is the most powerful healer at this stage of the game on the Prime server. In fact, if Prime is anything like vanilla in terms of balance, Clerics will be very overpowered. Rogues won't have access to the healing soul until someone can save up the planerite to unlock it, same for warriors.
Also the macro thing is not like in other games, it is actually built into the Rift ui (its really cool).

I think this will be used by other game companies to show to their board of directors that:
a) There is a demand for "vanilla" type of servers and/or can pull some players interest back again.
b) There is no demand for "vanilla type of servers and if the game is already dead or dying, "vanillaeing it", wont save it.
