Massaging is in order when it was all I was proposing on these threads all along yet all i was getting was push back from the usual few and not once did anyone mention anything about a free trial. And that includes you. Your post updating this information this morning, as if it were a new revelation, proves the point.

My guess is they made the same market observations, Trion, Zenimax and Kakao did.
There is clearly a significant group of customers anxious to play any new game, so the best bet is to go with high cost pre launch "collectors edition", ArcheAge cost $150, ESO was $100 and BDOs was $99.99 for the highest tier.
At launch there is usually a "box" price, again AA was around $49.99, ESO $59.99 and dropped 50% at Steam launch, BDO kept a tiered package system with the minimum at $29.99.
All 3 games "evolved" their models, ESO had a mandatory sub which they dropped at console launch, BDOs entry price continually dropped to $10 and same with AA.
All eventually provided free trials and free to play options, but here the key, not before milking the tier of players before this willing to pay much more for the "privilege " of going first.
All 3 have either patron sub packages or sell items of convenience the average serious player really can't live without.
In ESO its bag space, AA its extra energy and BDO is the master, many players find themselves buying in for $100 to $200 for the gathering pets, storage space and costumes.... and then a patron sub.
So this game is clearly doing similar, many backers paid big sums early, at launch a higher box price for those willing to pay.
Down the road I'm sure they'll discount the package, especially if they add new ways to monetize players with subs and or cash shop items.
Last should be the free players. As they have the least interest the game at first, better to let others build up the hype on how much they enjoy it.
After you have the froobs properly salivating you let them in, making sure you have an abundance of items to encourage them to let go of some of their money from their grubby, tight fists.

Thank you for the informative and dignified response. You set a good example for others *ahem* to follow
I thought for the most part that Kylran's response was pretty spot on...What I have learned from eyars of playing is its best just to wait it out.....This game though is a little different as alot of us have got to play it before it came to steam.....I dont consider this a new game at all...it looks very dated.
Typically the 1st weekend after Steam launch is the highest peak of concurrent players on steam - currently Project Gorgon has 265 concurrent players on steam, so we'll see how high it peaks today and tomorrow.
I think some people might be put off at this being early access and that there will be a wipe of gear and items collected (not skills) when it officially launches. If people are on the fence and want to try it but don't care for EA games or the current price, it's probably best to wait.
And if anyone thinks $30 is expensive, you've got bigger problems to worry about in your life.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
Well my opinion is the game MUST be a complete wipe, however i am very skeptical that will actually happen.Likely some added form of buy in to keep your stuff/levels.
The game needs an auction house,a full on crafting system/economy,slow enough to keep players all in the same zone long enough to form groups and friendships.
The way it is,the game is just not going to cut it,they could barely get the player base even at 100% free. The bottom line is the game needs a larger team and a larger vision, more depth, more complete, each zone needs about a 500% improvement, this is just imo going slowly nowhere.
A nice little effort for a 1-2 man team for a start back n the day,you know nice for a couple years. However he needed to secure a business partner that could bring the game to real heights and not sludge along at a snails pace doing mediocre work.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Thankfully, there's only two folks putting time into this project, so generating thousands of players isn't incredibly necessary.
I don't think the couple behind this is banking on it as their livelihood. At least, not from what I've read.

That's not very reassuring.
As a fan attempting to peddle the pro-PG aspects of the game, I wouldn't work too hard in advocating the above point of view.
It wouldn't work very well in as far as pulling in those players looking to invest in the long term viability and commitment to the game.

It wasn't an attempt to peddle the game. It was commenting on reality. Not every game needs headline numbers, specifically in this genre. I don't think this is a project the creators are putting time into solely for monetary gain.

Yea , this is a labor of love for them , that harkens back to when devs actually created cohesive immersive worlds for players , Ive been in PG for 4 years now from Pre Alpha , ive promoted PG here on this site for years ...
Of course they want to make money , and they are and will be hiring more help as they did last year ..
I see alot of familiar faces in this thread talking up this game, I was going to write it off because im a graphics whore and the 30 dollar price point seemed off but now im on the fence.

Actually you proposed both a free trial and a price reduction, not either or.
A free trial has been discussed before on the forums. Eric has said he wants a way for players to try the game before they commit. That's why the game has been freely accessible for the last 3+ years while they designed and tested various systems. He wasn't sure how that could take shape because he also wasn't entirely sure how he wanted monetization to work. He didn't promise it would be there, like every feature he's discussed.
By the way, you never asked if they intended a free trial either. You just assumed it wasn't and went from there.
Also offering a free trial does not lower the barrier to entry. It offers an opportunity to experience the game before deciding whether to pay or not. Either way the barrier is the same. I still stand by the opinion "entry barriers" to MMORPG gaming do not need lowered.
I did, in fact, propose an either or ...
"Far be it for me to criticize a developers financial worth of their project. However, we as potential customers would be remiss if we were not as honest as possible in assessing, and providing input, regarding said product's honest financial viability. In the current state of the MMORPG market, as it pertains to competitively comparable products on the market, their $29.99 price tag (and this is with a 25% off sale on Steam), is a bit on the high end. Considering PG is not the type of game that would otherwise entice impulse buying due to eye candy visuals, I honestly don't know if the price is justified.
I would suggest that, at least upon initial release, they rethink their financial business model. Players will be less vitriolic in their criticism if they are allowed to try a game without being saddled with such a high entry fee, only to be disappointed after giving it a brief once over. If your game is good, it will garner support and increase in popularity regardless. A worst case scenario is not an option as generally speaking, with few exceptions (FFXIV:ARR), MMOs are only given one chance to make it right before they are written off, and discarded, by a very unforgiving gamer population.
Off the top of my head I would, at least, suggest a Free Trial option to get your game populated and moving forward in a positive light. Absent that, perhaps a lower entry fee to say, at most, $14.99 (preferably $9.99) with the condition that the price will go up within, say a 3-6 month period, to entice players to purchase the game before that time lapse. IMHO, this is a reasonable start for PG at this point, and would at least foster good will within the community. The game does have deep systems potential that I feel will not be realized unless it utilizes a customized, and well thought out, business model."
So , for all those wanting a Trial .. it is coming ... from the dev
"We do plan on having a free trial, but I'm afraid I don't have a solid ETA for you on when that might be available."
I dont think it would be to far out
Who would be waiting for a trial... I mean it was literally free to download and play for years until a few days ago wasn't it?
Maybe everyone doesn't follow games as religiously as others do on game forums and the first time they will see or hear of it is when they see it displayed for sale on Steam. I would say that holds true for the majority gaming demographic.

Conceding when another is right is a sign of strength in a man. A sign of weakness is succumbing to the opposite.
Did you ever even ask if they had planned or intended something like that before you jumped in with both feet running to explain how it's being done wrong and how they need to lower the barrier of entry. No, you assumed a whole lot and went off from there.
And like I said, it doesn't lower the barrier of entry to offer a free trial. Players have to pay it regardless whether they do a free trial or not. This was never about a free trial. It was all about how much gamers have to pay.
I seriously doubt the barrier to entry will be lowered because the very people paying for the game would likely abandon it were it to F2P. We're there because of what the game is (an AC spiritual successor) and what it's not (a F2P game where any asshat can come in and do a drive by).
The biggest revenue debate on the forums was around whether the game should have a mandatory sub or not in addition to the box fee. Many wanted that just to keep the riff raff out, the rest of us didn't want to be locked into a sub + box fee.
I wanted them to add the sub and they are going to add a VIP sub in the future

Novel concept, I know.
It's just strange to ask "where is the free trial" for a game that LITERALLY had a 3-4 year free trial which just ended a day or two ago.
If people now see it for the first time and want to wait a few months for a free trial that's fine... and honestly... if they haven't heard of Project: Gorgon after all this time it's probably best that they do wait because pretty much every MMORPG site has had multiple articles on it through the years and it's not exactly the type of game that is going to appeal to the super-casual/twitch gamer either. The majority of people who haven't heard about it would likely pop in for 30 minutes and then give it a bad review.

I don't disagree with any of the above but this is why every effort should be made to sway as many players as possible into, at least, trying the game. Be it by offering a free trial, or lowering the price entry point. Even if you succeed in getting a fraction of those to try that would have otherwise not given the game a chance, and by doing so getting them hooked and sticking with the game, you are much the better for it. You have nothing to lose if the game is really as good as those who have tried it claim. It's just good business sense.
Interestingly the steamcharts are somewhat positive for an indie game like this of two developers. The all-time peaks I have witnessed past few days continues to grow. heck 268 currently playing is not too bad if suggesting only 5-10% of the population is playing at any time.
Typically the 1st weekend after Steam launch is the highest peak of concurrent players on steam - currently Project Gorgon has 265 concurrent players on steam, so we'll see how high it peaks today and tomorrow.

The issue is rarely the price - if something is REALLY desirable, people will pay for it.
Video game prices in the $30-$60 range are common, heck ArcheAge alpha packs were $150 years ago when that was unheard of (yes today much more expensive packs exist for other games) - and those packs sold like crazy.
so... yeah the issue is not $30 or $40 - the real issue is that Project Gorgon has low traction.
Again, I'm not sure where anyone submitted this game was going to be a 2018 best-seller. The devs never had that expectation, nor did the gamers playing prior to the Steam release. This is creating issues around the game to be cynical.
EDIT- This may come as a surprise, but not every MMORPG project is pursuing a dubious award from SuperData.
I did a lot of thinking after I posted that I feel it is worth about 20 bucks. As janky as it was while I was playing, there was something that was just plain fun for me. I'm not even really an explorer in games as much as I am just a wanderer so this game feels right. Not quite AC, but I get in the same groove when I play it. The fact that it has made it this far on a relatively shoestring budget is impressive as well.
I still think the game is only worth about 20 bucks. The community, the passion, and the fit and feel for me; that's where I see the value. I went ahead and got the 100 dollar pack off the shop. Still playing alpha and waiting for the key. Might end up being a terrible investment, but I've already gotten way more enjoyment out of it prior to giving anything than I've gotten from a plethora of other higher production value MMOs in recent years.
They don't brag about it, but leaving your game open for anybody at all to get in and play for free for years is about as open development as you can get. Even now you can go on their forums and find the link to the alpha launcher that will remain functional for a few weeks still after Steam launch. People crying for a trial yet doing no or minimal research on the game are probably better left outside crying.
With regards to F2P, for my purposes, as long as there are enough players and subsequent income to keep the lights on there's enough players.

Thank you for the informative and dignified response. You set a good example for others *ahem* to follow
And if anyone thinks $30 is expensive, you've got bigger problems to worry about in your life.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Of course they want to make money , and they are and will be hiring more help as they did last year ..
the future looks bright for PG
Aloha Mr Hand !

Maybe everyone doesn't follow games as religiously as others do on game forums and the first time they will see or hear of it is when they see it displayed for sale on Steam. I would say that holds true for the majority gaming demographic.
Novel concept, I know.

EDIT- This may come as a surprise, but not every MMORPG project is pursuing a dubious award from SuperData.
