On April 4th, Funcom will release the first new story content update for Secret World Legends: Dawn of the Morning Light. The DLC continues the story after the end of Tokyo’s main narrative, with the player being blamed for the events of that story, being tracked by bounty hunters, and generally trying to clear their name. We toured the new issue with Romain Amiel and Andy Benditt, and are now counting down the days to its launch.

It's a bummer I can't play this game without the frames stuttering the entire time. My computer can (should) destroy it. I've searched everywhere and used pretty much every fix that is out there with little to no change. My computer played TSW just fine. This is sad. DLC looks great though! (sorry for the rant)

Tried this both as TSW and the new one and I jsut dont get it...The game just has never felt right...Its too much of a single player experience and the whole game just feels off.

I don't play anymore, but I always root for them.  Was a truly fun/novel experience.  Wasn't perfect, but on balance, it had more pros than cons for me.

Looked promising, just I do not understand crazy idea to remove mouse from moving around. Horrible. And only reason I dumped for good. Enjoyed original release however a lot, despite bugs, small selection of spells, ....

TSW was a classic, I am not sure why it was a much greater success. It may be that horror plus a modern setting is just not people want out of a MMO.

I was puzzled by this, is it mouse point and click to walk, mouse look around?

I might have been OK with the modern setting if you could generate a character that didn't look like a teenager. I'm an older gamer and I have no desire to play some young emo looking guy , emo looking to me anyway. Give me a grizzled old orc or dwarf any day.

To be honest though you get that in a lot of MMOs look at BDO where I think the only avatar that can be old is the mage? But I am with you, you don't need an age scale; but teen, middle aged and old would be good.

That said my dwarves tend to look older than they are, its the massive beard I guess.

It is WASD movement. Not sure where point click to move came from.

The targeting is no longer Tab targeting though. It is point and shoot type.

And there is still mouse look, you look around with the mouse? More arcade style combat then. What about the button mashing in combat, there was a lot of that in TSW.

Tons of cosmetics to be earned in game, by far more than any other MMO. It is not hard at all to look totally unique. And of the few cosmetics that are part of a package or in the store, you can get just as good in the game. And for the record the sore is gone/hidden.

Now you open the wardrobe and everything is listed there. It tells you which mission, achievement, or how many marks (in game currency) or if you need to pony up real money.

If people want to not play because of cosmetic items that they feel entitled to......you go be you, more power to you. )

    Great setting.
    Excellent stories.
IMO, poor (or too soon for its time) execution of game mechanics.

The aesthetic customization was initially pretty mediocre. The combat animations weren't great. It was essentially the polar opposite of Age of Conan in most respects.

There is also the fact that not a lot of guides or help was readily available when they first launched and first impressions were about (people were / are obsessed with efficiency in leveling and getting to the "end game"). While the quests were interesting and unique, a lot of people probably didn't want to have to do puzzle or use an in-game browser and do research like they were back in High School or college. That compounded with other things -- and it still being new with little ability to look things up -- probably led to an immediate downsizing. Wasn't there also some problem with the PvP initially? I don't remember PvPing in the game that early, but it's just a latent memory of it not being that good at the start (from what I've read) or perhaps even non-existent. Not that a game needs PvP to be excellent.

It was also during an era where the only subscription game to survive was WoW, and many people were seeing new F2P options (or were used to saying "going F2P in x time"... perhaps even waiting for such since it was such an inevitability for a lot of people... and the concept of "optional subscription" was still relatively new for mainstream).

If I recall, it was also a bit confusing for a lot of people. That, and combat seemed to be slow on killing monsters along with what many called boring animations for such. No levels, no monsters on levels to see if you are able to attack it, no indication if you're in the right zone for your level of power. The ability system, while massive and customizable, seemed an overload for many a player as a whole. It seemed like gear and putting points into equipping gear also added to this as gear was essentially your level of power if I recall correctly.

At the time, the mainstream MMO crowd just wasn't ready for a lot of it.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

An evenings worth of missions is what I have heard.
    No investigation missions.
Will be more in the future if Season 2 does well....as it was free I guess they mean people buy the collector's edition and spend $$ in the store.
The 3 hours of content wont allow me to justify supporting Funcom with $$.

Will leave the new content till I hear what comes next.....more new stuff or maintenance mode.
Knock off dailies maybe , log out and go play Stellaris.

    Turns on Radio Free Gaia....

    ....This is the end
    Beautiful friend
    This is the end
    My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes... Again
Can you picture what will be
    So limitless and free
Desperately in need... Of some... Stranger's hand
    In a... Desperate land
Lost in a Roman... Wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
    All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
    Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
    Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake... He's old, and his skin is cold
    The west is the best
    The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest
The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
    Driver, where you taken' us
The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and... Then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door... And he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
    Mother... I want to... Waaaaaa
C'mon baby,--------- No "take a chance with us"
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
    Doin' a blue rock
    On a blue bus
    Doin' a blue rock
    C'mon, yeah
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
    This is the end
    Beautiful friend
    This is the end
    My only friend, the end
It hurts to set you free
    But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
    This is the end

Secret World Legends has a tendency to suffer from video lag ("hitching", not caused by network latency), even on very high-end machines. This is a result of several things, but mostly caused by the game engine's asset streaming technology being tied to the game's framerate. When assets load or unload, the game's framerate drops temporarily due to the increase in bandwidth.

At least, that's how I understand it. If a dev or someone who knows this stuff better than me has a more detailed explanation, please share it!

Enabling an FPS cap can significantly reduce the occurrence of this behavior by telling the game to not work any harder than it needs to in order to produce a smooth, stable frame rate. You can do this using third-party tools, or if you have an Nvidia GPU, you can change the graphics driver's settings to enforce an FPS limit.

This guide is intended for Nvidia users only. I have tested the profile on both the DX9 and DX11 clients and it provides similar performance improvements on both. I do not have access to an AMD GPU, so if anyone has any tweaks to offer on that side, please share them.

Reduce/Eliminate Hitching with Nvidia Profile Inspector

Nvidia Profile Inspector is a handy utility for manually adjusting individual settings for the default game profiles provided with the Nvidia drivers. Using this tool, you can tweak a few things that typically cause the game to hitch or otherwise offer poor performance.

    1. To start, download Nvidia Profile Inspector and extract it to wherever you like.
    2. Download SWLprofile.zip, and extract SWLprofile.v1.nip from the zip file.
    3. Open nvidiaProfileInspector.exe and let it load, then in the Profiles field in the top left corner, type "Secret World Legends". (If Secret World Legends isn't present in the list, update your drivers.)
    4. Click the Import User Profiles button, then locate the SWLprofile.v1.nip file.
      766
    5. Once it looks like the above (note the blue-gray gears next to some settings - these are custom settings from the profile), click the Apply changes button.
    6. Launch SWL and modify your in-game settings. If your computer could handle everything at max in the past, then leave your settings alone. Don't test in populated areas like Agartha - even a Titan Xp will cry for mercy there. Go to a playfield and run around a bit. If you're still getting a poor framerate, try this:
      1. Start by reducing the Advanced GFX Settings and View Distance sliders under the Advanced tab in SWL's Video Options menu. 3 is considerably less demanding than 4 and it makes a negligible difference in quality.
      2. Turn off Motion Blur and and set Anti-alias Quality to FXAA.
      3. Disable FXAA altogether and use an injector like SweetFX to use SMAA instead.
    7. That's it! You should now have a much more stable framerate in SWL.

IMPORTANT: The custom profile settings may be overwritten when updating to newer Nvidia drivers or after a major Windows update. Be sure to open up Nvidia Profile Inspector again and see if the changes were reverted. If so, just re-import the profile again and apply changes.

SWL is dead too sadly. It already has no population anymore in the lower level zones. Only a hardcore few in the top level zones. :-/
It's a shame really. I really enjoyed TSW (except Tokyo), but SWL seems to be failing hard with population dwindling so quickly already. I hope for them enough people come back for this new zone, but if you already don't get any influx of new players anymore so short after the re-launch. Well.... no good. :(
