UPDATE from Daybreak Game Company:

Daybreak confirms we are realigning our workforce to better position our company for the future.  Because of this, we have had to make an extremely difficult decision to part ways with some of our employees across various disciplines at the studio.  We are doing everything we can to take care of each affected individual by providing them appropriate transition assistance.

Daybreak remains focused on publishing and developing large-scale online games and will continue to service our existing and long-standing games and franchises.

Rumors are swirling that a round of layoffs have hit Daybreak Game Company. Ry Schueller, Brand Manager at DGC, has indicated that he is "a free agent". We have a statement from DGC confirming the restructuring of the workforce.

Hopefully someone buys the Everquest IP when they inevitably go under.

When you are in strict maintenance mode you are going to lose clientele, hence a reduction in workforce is bound to happen.  You have to wonder how long the dedicated EQ players can keep the company solvent.

"Appropriate transition assistance"  could mean anything from severance to "the door is over there".  Typical HR bafflegab.

The bigger, unanswered question is "why".  Is this downsizing due to bad fiscal performance of the products that Daybreak administers?  Is it tied to the larger CN investigation story?  Or is this the next step in dismantling / retiring SOE products before a planned 'turning off the lights' event?

If it goes that route, hope that someone who will treat the IP well buys it. Hope it doesn't go the way of City of Heroes and Auto Assault. Maybe Perfect World will buy it and add it to their stable.
I sure hope it doesn't go to Perfect World holy crap.

Whoever it might go to probably won't be so nice letting things like Project 99 stick around.

I'm wondering if Daybreak really *could* sell the EverQuest IP.  That whole 'Sony still owns 10% of Daybreak' news made me question if Sony had retained IP transfer rights to EQ.  Similar to saying "you can use the license and operate the existing games, but don't own it".  That *might* be about 10% of the value of Daybreak.

It wouldn't seem unreasonable to have sold the operation and limited rights to the existing EQ, but retain some degree of control of the future of EQ.  After all, most people associate "EQ" as a "Sony" product, and are oblivious to the actual company history behind EQ.

I noticed you've found a fondness for the  emoji.  I have nothing to add about Daybreak, but just wanted to say: I approve! :D

It look like it has lost the purpose without Russian money laundering.

Hate to see EQ or EQ2 die. Hope if they do get taken down, they auction off IP's to someone that cares about them.

Or would they just fall back to Sony because they have 10% still in those IP's?

Which brings up question, is Sony going to be taken down with them?

What % of their workforce are we talking got laid off here? It's a little premature to start crying "the sky is falling" without more info.

This will inadvertently affect SSG and LOTRO + DDO. Since they partnered with Daybreak.

You are right, that project was something so many people (including me) were looking forward to. Even my girlfriend who doesn't play MMO's that much was super pumped for a new Everquest, and one bump and they shut the project down. I just can't imagine it will never come out, hopefully someone buys the IP and the assets and makes what people wanted.

According to a post in Massively from someone claiming to have "sources" it's in the 30-40% of the entire workforce range.

    If true, that's brutal.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, if you have played their games and bare witness to what they have done to the EQ franchise it's actually shocking they didn't go out of business years ago.  If the employees that are left have any integrity they would just quit.

Surprisingly employees value having a job and being able to support their families more than some forum zombie's nostalgia.

There is some serious shit going down within CN/Daybreak

All this crap coming down at the same time is more than just coincidence.

Is is really Layoffs DBG? Or are people tired of you paying them in cash shop currency instead of getting an actual paycheck in order to stay on board?

God THIS. I need a spiritual successor for Everquest and if that IP's lost so is all of my hope.
