Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire launches today, the next in an ever-growing line of masterful cRPGs. Obsidian Entertainment has brought gamers a new cRPG that both expands the Pillars universe and provides fans with exciting new ways to play this most-beloved genre. Deadfire offers proof that epic single-player games are worth making despite what some in the industry have said to the contrary.

I have the first game and probably restarted the game a dozen times changing my character. Never made it past the first town you come across. The constant updates to tweak balancing of classes I was playing turned me off. I told myself once they finish with all their tweaks then I'll do a proper play through. That never happened.

So, now the 2nd game is out and really excited they added multi-classing. Is it necessary to go back and play the first one or can I just start with this one?

You absolutely do NOT have to play the first. You may feel lost at times when they refer back to events from the first, but it's not game-breaking by any stretch. Go! DO EET!

I thought #2 was a direct sequel though, meaning everything you've done/did in the first one transfer to the 2nd.  It's like like DOS where it's hundreds of years later.

    Or am I misinformed?

You can import your Pillars 1 save to the 2nd or can completely rebuild it from scratch in a very detailed series of choices or you can choose from a series of five default scenarios.

I hope it sells well so they can bring this one to PS4 as well. It would be nice to have both games together on my RPG wooden shelf next to their kin.

I must admit I like this game but can never sit down long enough or often enough to finish it.  Perhaps one day.

So many contextual conversation options.  I hope they don't all boil down to two different conclusions during replays, but right now it seems like there's an overwhelming number of ways to engage most NPCs depending upon background, culture, and skills.  This is what I love about RPGs.

Party member skills jive much better in scripted sequences.  UI presents the complex combat information in an even better manner building directly off the first title (seriously, the hover tips are genius), the artwork is better, party AI is better...  Larian and Obsidian are perfect examples of a positive use of crowdfunding, and their sequel titles speak to studios constantly refining their craft.  They're bringing art back into video games in a big way.  It's a refreshing change of pace.

Honestly, the moral choices actually have an impact. There's no "one right" faction or decision to make as each one has very valid points for their perspective. It's fascinatingly complex and nuanced. :)

This was me. Loved the original game but I got caught up starting over and over again. Consider me motivated to play through and have this to look forward to playing. Thanks for a great review!

Hence why I used it because it's become synonymous to this particular style of game -- all that hearkens back to things like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

Yea, cRPG evokes those kinds of games specifically to me.  When I hear you guys refer to it as a cRPG, replayability through narrative choices, parties full of memorable sidekicks, a focus on world interactivity, and a great and immersive story are what comes to my mind.

"Let's say this plainly: Deadfire offers ample proof that epic single-player games are absolutely worth making."

Naturally I agree, but someone needs to tell AAA studios not everything they do must have a multiplayer element or even be a multiplayer only game.
