Richard Garriott after Shroud of the Avatar?

NildenNilden Member EpicPosts: 3,916
So let's say Richard Garriott tries to make another game after SotA.

Would you be interested?

I would not be interested at all.

Yes, because if a game is good i don't care who made it, i will play it. Same goes for a bad game, i'll skip it even if it's made by the best company ever.

So, i would be interested if the game is good. Past games don't determine how future games will be, lessons learned/unlearned do IMO.

Another MMO?  No.  If he focused his efforts into a AAA single-player experience?  Sure.

After shroud he has proved that he doesn't understand how to make a good online game after ultima online.

i would love it if he made a spiritual successor to the single player Ultima games.

I wasn't even overly interested in SotA. I was just bored and it was fun for like 3 days. lol

    No, that guy is done.

Maybe after the game had been out for a year and I saw a decent number of players actually saying it was a good game.  No way this guy is getting another penny of crowdfunding cash from me.  But then again, it's likely that no one else is, either.  I've been burned and learned.

I feel like a traitor to my age group for saying this but no, I'm not nearly as interested in a game made by a gaming legend whose best is 20 years in the past as I am in new ideas from a hungry young team.

Depends what the community and business model is like

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Agree. I dislike SotA but loved Tabula Rasa, I most certainly think the man has talent, and issues.

It is just huge resource waste....'

It would have been better for his legacy if he never reentered earth's atmosphere.

Portalarium were listening too hard to its “yes” fans and customers and not enough to its critics.

As an example - there were a Google Hangout to talk about Combat Systems. The invitation had disclaimers that you are not allowed to be critical of the combat system itself. Only allowed to talk about it in a approving fine tuning way.

It is counterproductive not to be critical.

Only listening to real-money traders and elitist whales destroyed their community.

That is why i will never trust Richard Garriott again and i hope Shroud of the Avatar fails cause future gaming would be awful if his version of funding and game development becomes the standard.

Since he already pre-sold them... if there are further games they need to be SotA episodes 2,3,4 and 5.

Shroud of Amator is better than WoW.

Yes, but I would be much more cautious, and no money before hands.
People like him, should not use crowd funding to make a game, not at least until the game is already 70% done.

I would skip any game that has SotA monetization, not just Garriot games.

I think he should make a game and then launch the only working copy into space - like Tesla did with his car.

Finding a 'working' copy will be the hardest part of the project.

I voted no, on the count that he is very unlikely to come up with something that will appeal to me personally. Of course should the future prove otherwise, I'll give it a chance just like I would any other game that was appealing enough to try. I don't see it happening though. This Shroud of the Avatar mess is always going to be a black mark on his resume.

If Garriott made a game called "Money for my Retirement" I would still give it a look because past successes and failures do not guarantee anything about future games.

After SotA I wonder how much support he would get on kickstarter?

And there lies my concern for crowd funding, too much of this and its not dodgy people who will be avoided, players will avoid the whole concept of funding an indie MMO.

He ruined his legacy. He could have floated on UO and Tabula Rasa.
