Bought a few, the last one was Project Gorgon, so far so good.
I've never had any issues playing MMO's through Steam. The Steam version has sometimes worked better.
How better? Steam is just a game launcher. They do very little to the game files.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

One of the main benefits of buying an MMO through Steam as was demonstrated by Bless Online, is that you are far more likely to get a refund through Steam than you are otherwise.
I Love for the most part having all my games organized in one place . From the refund policy to the summer sales, friends list & even their new stance on whats allowed on the store I'll continue to support Steam because they provide a fantastic service

How better? Steam is just a game launcher. They do very little to the game files.
When I recently downloaded lord of the rings online the game wouldn't launch. Kept getting an error indicating the game couldn't access some files.
Tried everything I could find as others had this problem as well.
I wasn't going to download it again (which was a suggestion) just to have the same issue so I looked to see if the game was on steam. It was, I downloaded it from there and no issues with launching.
As far as people liking it "for some reason" I think it's pretty obvious. One can purchase a large amount of games easily.
The first time I ever used steam was because I wanted to play a game that I just couldn't find anywhere around here. Since I live in a city I expected purchasing any game wouldn't be a hassle but I just couldn't find the game disks.
I found it on Steam and was playing it right after the download. It's an easy to use (at least for me) digital solution.
Also, Steam is just a storefront. So if one is having a problem with a game then it makes sense to contact the developers.

Well, as several mentioned in this thread (you did read the thread right?) some games actually launched better for them in Steam.
Others enjoyed Steam's tracking of hours played or deep discount pricing.
I did read. And was wondering how Steam made a game "play better." Nobody answered that.

GOG for me. DRM free. The game is mine. I have the loaders downloaded and I can load the game up whenever, wherever I want. My games are also listed in my GoG library. I can download them again from anywhere I have an Internet connection. GoG also has a wonderful support staff that actually sets up DOSBox in their loaaders so you don't have to mess with it.
Steam? Crap by comparison, but most game designers would rather use them than anything else.

I think Ozmodan is having a slight overreaction but that's what we are all supposed to do for the slightest inconvenience now. I look forward to a video filled with angst, railing at Steam.

I don't really care about the DRM. Good Old Games is better for me when it comes to "good old games".
Vampyr is not on Good Old Games so there it is.
Sorry, while I can't say Steam is some savior it's not crap from where I sit as it provides a service and I have had a good experience.
"Point is" just because one buys an mmorpg on Steam doesn't mean there are going to be issues. Right now I have Lord of the Rings Online, Bless and Project Gorgon and I don't have issues launching those games.

Steam is great. People just like to hate on what is popular to try and sound cool.
Maybe, I don't know, but the way some posters talk about a perfectly decent service bares no relation to reality. The changes may cause some big issues though, but only time will tell.

I've had no issues with steam games. Maybe I don't buy enough indie games that seem prone to issues.
All my games launch.
Very rarely I might have an issue where steam doesn't log in for me. Usually a restart solves it.
I can't tell if some people have extremely delicate sensibilities and they just fly off the handle when the smallest thing happens or if they are actually having major problems.

Steam had an issue yesterday. Players that have ESO through Steam(like me) couldn't log on for like 12hrs. No biggy...sat outback and watched it rain, read a book, then watched the final minutes of Preakness Stakes and saw Justify become a Triple Crown winner, followed by a great meal with my SO(a meal that she cooked - food orgasm incoming), then we watched an MLS soccer match between Portland Timbers vs Sporting KC. Nobody whined that we couldn't sign into ESO - there was(as you can see) so much more we could do.

Well, that's what the OP is talking about. I wouldn't say he's "whining" but as dissapointing as it is not to be able to play a game one wanted to play, it is a bit intense to just post that one should never buy an mmorpg from Steam over this one incident.
Unless it happens all the time? If that is the case then maybe the post should be "don't by Elder Scrolls Online from Steam as this always happens to me."
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
lol. Did you try going to the game .exe in your file system to see if you could log in through there instead of using the steam portal itself? I've never had a problem. Even when I couldn't log in through the steam shell, I've always been able to login through the other method. And not just with MMO's. Not to mention... if it's that big a deal that you get in to a game over a 12 hour period, you might like to take a look at yourself and ask if there's something seriously wrong with your addiction. There are other things to do in life than obsess with a game.
In some cases I find it's useful to own a online/mmo game on Steam. I'll explain the reason why I think that is the case.
I bought the game Black Desert Online when it first released off the website. In the past on occasion I bought Kakao Cash using real money paying through paypal. The transactions all ways went through without any issues at all.
Then this year I went to buy some Kakao Cash to buy something from the shop. Just like all the other times I payed by paypal and my payment through paypal was accepted.
The problem is they use a 3rd party company called paymentwall that handles the details of the transaction what I mean by this is the following. My Self ----> Paypal ----> paymentwall ----> Black Desert Online.
Even though the payment was accepted by paypal and my credit card was charged. But when it came to paymentwall side of things they refused the transaction. They told me I have to send them a copy of my government issued ID.
I told them I'm not sending a company a copy of government issued ID to a company I don't know nothing about. Then told them I bought Kakao Cash in the past without a single issue.
I decided not to play Black Desert Online anymore. I did end up getting a refund.
Another reason to own a online/mmo game on Steam would be. If the game in question has a option to pay for a subscription or buy other stuff/items through Steam. Would be useful for those who have a bank where they don't allow International transactions.
In my case I have no choice but to pay for my FFXI subscription by using Steam Wallet. Since my bank does not allow International transactions.

The only thing I can think is are they doing their research? If you don't check You Tube for what it looks like, Metacritic and read some reviews, read some steam reviews; if they buy because they just like the look of what they see on Steam store page?
"Point is" just because one buys an mmorpg on Steam doesn't mean there are going to be issues. Right now I have Lord of the Rings Online, Bless and Project Gorgon and I don't have issues launching those games.
And I really can't argue that "point." I recall CDs and floppies that would get corrupted and not work. Nothing is perfect

For my "sensibilities", it is because I am not given a choice anymore.
I bought Skyrim. Got the box and dvds and everything. I went to load it
up and HAD to create a Steam account. Now, game developers release on
Stream only, like their own companies can't handle the distribution.
It's
great loads of people love Steam. You're satisfied. When every game
releases only on a "games as a service" (which is how I view Steam)
platform, you'll be in my boat.
It amazes me that people who love
a product/service can't seem to listen anything bad about it. Woot! You
have all your games in one place. I have always had my games in one place: My HDD. You (and apparently everyone else) love Steam. Great. I don't. It does nothing for me but get in my way.
