Am i too old for WOW ?

viepaxviepax Member UncommonPosts: 2
Due to a mayor change in circumstance I find myself with once again spare time to invest back into MMOs, WoW was my first MMO so it stands to reason that I reinstalled and started to play again. However I am now 35 not 25 and there is a part of me that feels that im too old to play. Are there any MMOs out there with a mature player base ?

Hehe no, you're not too old.  I'm almost 41 and have stopped playing until the new expansion.  But excited to dive back into the game when it releases in a couple of months.  The guild I was in earlier, was full of older type gamers too.  I don't know their ages really, but they sounded older than me on the mic lol.

My dad played WoW up until he passed away at 70.  There is no reason to stop playing any video game due to age.  You play what you enjoy, period. :)

Mature and helpful community in LOTRO. Have you played it yet?

Nah, your tastes may have changed, but to be honest I think anyone can play anything. A game is a game. The only time I ever felt weird playing a game was Wizard 101, and that was just because it kept asking me things to verify I didn't need a "parents email".

I would say out of most MMORPG's, wow is the best example of having both ends of the age spectrum, you have the younger kids who sit in trade chat spamming memes 24/7, and then you have the older people who are usually in their own guild chats or voice chat.

I guess finding a suitable guild is the answer. Most pug content is so easy that people don't need to be very social anymore. Some other games have a bit more friendly people like FFXIV and such.

You might try Elder Scrolls Online. BTW, I'm in my 60s.

The older less popular mmo's have the most mature communities.

I'd rather have a helpful community vs a "mature" one. Alot of this comes down to servers though. Given that WoW is one of the most populated mmorpgs, you're just going to encounter more types of people with lower pop servers usually having less "toxic" people vs high pop. People saying lower pop games tend to have better communities aren't really understanding that its just less people you're encountering which makes it seem that way. As long as you find a good server, you should be good in a game like WoW. Or you can try FFXIV which is known to have an all around good and helpful community across all data centers.

Ive been playing LOTRO since launch and I agree it is one of the best communities in any MMO.

I don't think age is a barrier to playing any MMO at this point.   I don't have any numbers but it seems I run across a lot of players even older than you when I'm playing LOTRO, GW2 and ESO these days. I would imagine there are older players in WoW also.

I played WoW well into my 50s, so no, you are not too old.

As to the player base, WoW has has players in every age group.

I actually doubt I would even want to join a guild with people in their teens and twenties.   This old fogey gets tired of stupidity of kids.  Hard enough to deal with the stupidity of adults!

The mature player base is not a concern for gaming companies, especially in MMOs, you will play with the pre-teen to mid twenties demographic and you will like it or sling your hook.

I'd dare suggest that, on the contrary, WoW is NOT intended for those of young age...

If you are too old to play world of warcraft then you are too old to play video games.

I say that coming from the position that one is never too old to play video games. But maybe your taste has changed and you want something less whimsical?

Wanting, desiring, enjoying something whimsical, less serious, has nothing to do with age.

As far as a "mature" player base, they all have a range.

You'll have to define "mature" viepax and i don't mean that in a joking or snarky kind of way. Do you mean 30 + , More laid back no nonsense type attitude , Less laid back less PC type attitude , What does "Mature " even mean in 2018 ?

If you are just referring to age as in over 30  id say take your pick. I feel like MMO's in general attract a much older crowd in terms of age at least.

I just want to add if you haven't played MMO's in 10 years they are much more solo friendly now, being in a guild isn't what it use to be and most if not all can be played without one or one that has very little participation. Now depending on whom you ask you may or may not find this as a plus.

lol, I'm 42. You're only as old as you feel. If you want to play a game, then play. I'm a gamer for life, including table top gaming when possible. If that makes me childish then so be it. And I don't play WoW (hate it), but do play other games.

I see guilds for older people recruiting all of the time, way older than you are, so you should be fine lol.

I'm well into my 60's. I started WoW in late beta, (On Deathwing, believe it or not :) ) and I'm here to tell you that today's game, is but a pale shadow of what it once was.  But then times and people change (and not always for the better...) so why should games be any different?

Its not so much ones age, as ones perceptions and toleration that determines what one enjoys.  I've been playing a lot of Warframe, after being really disappointed in Destiny 2.

I do plan to try Battle when it comes out (I've played every expansion since launch) but I've no idea how long I'll be staying around, unless its at least a good expansion.

You could try Elder Scrolls online, or Guild Wars 2. Or even Final Fantasy 14.  Just find one that suits your current tastes and expectations.

Since when does a game dictate what game you should play?

This might sound arrogant but i feel i am too good for Wow.
Wow to me is like the introductory mmorpg, for players who want it easier, not a lot of thinking, basically a lot of signs telling you what to do and where to go.

Does that mean it is more geared to a younger, less mature crowd, quite possibly yes but not entirely.I have found various types of maturity in all the games, there is no one single design for ages but imo Wow is definitely geared more towards the younger crowd than other mmorpgs.
The internet used to be mostly for adults, then around the 2000-2005 era around the time internet became a household item and all the kids jumped on the internet.
In general games that have ideas in place that promote BRAGGING will entice a less mature crowd.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

When a gaming industry nearly only makes one sort of game. ;)
