$500 to play the alpha 1 ?? Talk about comically overpriced. LOL
You didn't scroll further down to the $5K tier where the really big laughs are.

Why is it funny how others spend their money on a hobby?  I've played hockey my whole life.  Since I stopped playing competitive I've played men's leagues for the last ten years.  I'm a goalie it cost about $1500/year for four different leagues my equipment cost about $3500 brand new and I spend about $300/year on sticks.  If someone wants to spend $5k on a hobby they enjoy good for them.

Its amazing how other people try to judge or ridicule how others spend their money.
People are more than welcome to spend their money any way they wish.

I'm thinking of starting a stand up comedy show mocking them for it though....

    Such easy targets.

For spending money on a hobby?   Nope not in my experience.  I specifically said a hobby, I said nothing about all of society.

I am trying to remember the last time the other goalie pointed and laughed at my pads.  Or the time I drove my 48 Ford to a car show and the other car owners pointed and laughed.  Nope in both of those hobbies there is respect for one another and not the desperate need to collect upvotes from the other "kewl kids" in forums.

See I'll agree there is a friendly banter between Ford, Chevy and Dodge owners my point here is the money aspect.  A Ford owner may give a Chevy owner crap but he would never be like oh man you spend $40k on that Chevy.  I just dont think there is a need to try and degrade people because they want to support this game.

I would never spend $5k but I'm glad other do to help the game.

tbh, I dont think the p2p only option is gonna go well. I see people referencing ESO when talking about recent western mmorpg studio success but forget that the switch to b2p was honestly what saved the game. Intrepid should honestly do the same, just offering a b2p option upfront (People were gobbling Bless up out of desperation, so the numbers for a new mmorpg are there) and then just offer the patches for 'free' in a subscription or through a buy patch basis like ESO, that way they have steady income and good traffic. The main issue with p2p is that a lot of people dont want to feel 'tied' down when subbing so they question if its worth it at all, but b2p lets people revisit whenever they feel like it and dump money into the game on content they want when they want it.
perhaps b2p was the only choice for ESO because it is a bad game. Bad as an MMO at least, might be better as a polished co-op.
Wildstar was bad? Definitely upon release. Honestly most p2p only games were pretty horrid upon release or at least didn't justify the sub from most causing a shift in monetization. People are simple at their core. Sure we have voices on here that will either support or avoid this project as it currently stands, but none of us are the majority that will actually be giving money on the game's lifespan assuming it releases. Personally, I'd love for the game to succeed, but these guys kind of can't afford a 'horrid launch' like say ESO/Wildstar/FFXIV etc, so its just better to cut to the chase and just have people know what they can have upfront, which for the most part ESO's monetization model does that. Even WoW and FFXIV can't avoid severe population dips with how much more populated they are compared to other mmorpgs on the market, so b2p kind of gives the illusion that there's more traffic than there really is simply because people can access the game when they feel like it and then opt in for additional content if they want. When you look at it as a whole, the p2p/b2p/f2p all still have cash shops, with b2p and p2p mostly being cosmetic (FFXIV does have a couple of items that have exp bonuses until a certain level only available via cash shop but I never see anyone complain along with other shady practices as 'premium' game). Just to be clear though, I'm not in favor of f2p or even a 1 time b2p option with the cash shop having mostly items in its shop that cost more than the game itself (i.e. BDO), I just feel when handled right, b2p can be the superior for most people involved as long as you know what's included in the base price and what should be logically sold extra (like patches that include new dungeons/raids/locations, but not patches that have qol improvements).

I can see your point, but it isn't quite analogous.

It would be more like Chevy and Ford owners hearing a group of folks decided they would throw millions at a former Chevy/Ford employee at the former employee's mere idea for a new truck, without any guarantee of what they'll actually end up with.

k I can see your point about EA and kickstart but at the same time I dont see an issue with people spending their money on them.  There is an acceptance in video game forums to ridicule, demean or attempt to tell people how to spend their money.  That's the issue I'm trying to address here.

As long as they are only bringing their technical expertise to the game, I'll be happy.  If they start pushing their design philosophy from previous games, I will not be happy at all.  Especially from the ex-daybreak developers.

    B)
Pretty sad...only in video games is this mentality accepted and encouraged.  Luckily it's only the  minority running around on forums looking for attention.
Clearly no one mocks others anywhere else in society.....lolz.

Since you drive a Ford I'll have to give you props, but had it been a Dodge, major mocking for sure.

Good news for me, I'm too old to care about being cool, or popular or anything else....well except being alive of course.

    ;)
See I'll agree there is a friendly banter between Ford, Chevy and Dodge owners my point here is the money aspect.  A Ford owner may give a Chevy owner crap but he would never be like oh man you spend $40k on that Chevy.  I just dont think there is a need to try and degrade people because they want to support this game.

I would never spend $5k but I'm glad other do to help the game.

Fair enough.  The underlying reasoning, from my point of view, is the fact that there's simply no framework with which to hold devs responsible for their words, the same ones that backers use to justify their support.

A better framework needs to be implemented to protect consumers.  The example I use is CoE's timeline; there was no way they were meeting that.  The project lead, when confronted with that fact, responded aggressively in an attempt to save face.  He should be held accountable to that.  However, there's currently no known framework to hold him accountable, as backer decisions are made emotionally and not rationally (that's not a derogatory remark).

To me, and many others, the idea that one would throw money at a hope and a prayer seems silly.  To put it in a more relatable way: if Jacques Nasser (Ford CEO, 1999-2001 per Wiki) came to car enthusiasts and said, "Hey, you guys give me 50 million, I'll design and manufacture you a truck that's amphibious AND outpulls Ford and Chevy!  And I'll do it in 18 months!" would you not scoff at the idea that folks would believe him?

Their questing is already done in FFXIV with area events, custom events, real time.

Ability to destroy what they create, well what if i like what is there,i don't want the city destroyed?
I have played the originator of the caravan idea within SRO.It is cool when balanced with NPC's but soon you get players and levels, better gear it is very unbalanced and NOT fun.
Crafting, well worded PR but is crafting going to be more meaningful than say a Dungeon Boss,if not then it is a SECOND rate system of which most won't care because everyone aims for the BEST of.

A lot of this is doable, can be done within deep systems with good AI design, good combat and god grouping design. Then we have resistances and weaknesses,it ALL has to be there or the game will end up ....a game that had potential.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Absolutely not, but you can get accurate, unbiased information about the prospects of your 401k, that's why you use a fiduciary.  They have a legal responsibility to act in your best interest.  Crowdfunded devs have no legal responsibility to act in their backers' best interests, only a responsibility to make some kind of attempt to do what they say and not directly lie to backers about material facts (such as the state of the project).  That's not a hard bar to pass.

Lol, well now you know that if I bitch at you somewhere, it doesn't mean I can't be civil with you elsewhere. ;)

EDIT- My ire for crowdfunding is much more focused on the devs saying unrealistic things to convince people to pay them than it is on backers believing it.  Most backers aren't intimately familiar with software or game development.  They're at a disadvantage here.

According to Wiki, their "developers have been spun up in France and Malaysia"!? It makes me even more curious about AoC's mysterious (!) budget, especially since "Intrepid has made a commitment to transparency and communication...".

I found that curious too. Massively is also reporting that their development team, with the French and Malaysian additions, is now over 100.

This is not your typical crowdfunded-with-a-shoestring-budget indie KS MMO.
