According to Wiki, their "developers have been spun up in France and Malaysia"!? It makes me even more curious about AoC's mysterious (!) budget, especially since "Intrepid has made a commitment to transparency and communication...".
I found that curious too. Massively is also reporting that their development team, with the French and Malaysian additions, is now over 100.
This is not your typical crowdfunded-with-a-shoestring-budget indie KS MMO.
Sharif said he had access to and was prepared to spend $30M to build the MVP core game. The KSer was for "extras' only.
His ramp up so far indicates he clearly has more funding beyond what the crowdfunding has raised.

$500 to play the alpha 1 ?? Talk about comically overpriced. LOL
You didn't scroll further down to the $5K tier where the really big laughs are.
Why is it funny how others spend their money on a hobby? I've played hockey my whole life. Since I stopped playing competitive I've played men's leagues for the last ten years. I'm a goalie it cost about $1500/year for four different leagues my equipment cost about $3500 brand new and I spend about $300/year on sticks. If someone wants to spend $5k on a hobby they enjoy good for them.
Its amazing how other people try to judge or ridicule how others spend their money.
People are more than welcome to spend their money any way they wish.
I'm thinking of starting a stand up comedy show mocking them for it though....
Such easy targets.
Pretty sad...only in video games is this mentality accepted and encouraged. Luckily it's only the minority running around on forums looking for attention.
Dude... grow a thicker skin. People have been laughing at hobbyists throwing crazy money at their precious obsession since the dawn of time. Gaming is no different.
You have a right to spend your money any way you want and we have the right to laugh our asses off about it.

Ah, but of course. What I wonder about is - why Star Citizen or Crowfall or Camelot Unchained show us the numbers, while AoC prefers wordsmithing and rumours?

Clearly no one mocks others anywhere else in society.....lolz.
For spending money on a hobby? Nope not in my experience. I specifically said a hobby, I said nothing about all of society.
I am trying to remember the last time the other goalie pointed and laughed at my pads. Or the time I drove my 48 Ford to a car show and the other car owners pointed and laughed. Nope in both of those hobbies there is respect for one another and not the desperate need to collect upvotes from the other "kewl kids" in forums.
Since you drive a Ford I'll have to give you props, but had it been a Dodge, major mocking for sure.
Good news for me, I'm too old to care about being cool, or popular or anything else....well except being alive of course.
See I'll agree there is a friendly banter between Ford, Chevy and Dodge owners my point here is the money aspect. A Ford owner may give a Chevy owner crap but he would never be like oh man you spend $40k on that Chevy. I just dont think there is a need to try and degrade people because they want to support this game.
I would never spend $5k but I'm glad other do to help the game.
I can see your point, but it isn't quite analogous.
It would be more like Chevy and Ford owners hearing a group of folks decided they would throw millions at a former Chevy/Ford employee at the former employee's mere idea for a new truck, without any guarantee of what they'll actually end up with.
k I can see your point about EA and kickstart but at the same time I dont see an issue with people spending their money on them. There is an acceptance in video game forums to ridicule, demean or attempt to tell people how to spend their money. That's the issue I'm trying to address here.
Gaming is meant to be a fair playing field, just like the sports you mentioned. Humour aside I have real problems with people buying their place as top dog.
However, when it comes to specific games I withhold judgment until launch, or in these days Early Access. But it is hard to see how such a game can balance that for launch, or indeed if they would ever want to.

Ah, but of course. What I wonder about is - why Star Citizen or Crowfall or Camelot Unchained show us the numbers, while AoC prefers wordsmithing and rumours?
Why aren't Camelot Unchained and Crowfall on time even though they're showing us numbers. Showing us the numbers hasn't delivered much more to us than knowledge the numbers. All that transparency still hasn't kept their projects on target and on time. Maybe transparency is only good for PR points. What do you think him showing us those numbers would tell us? How would it help us as consumers of the product?
None of these games is on time, furthermore none of four is even a game yet (or even close to it, I dare say); AoC is just closer to the honeymoon which all of them had, as you might remember. Also, showing big numbers is obviusly good for PR and business ("the dark side" of transparency and honesty), it goes without saying.
As I already said, showing numbers would fit well with "a commitment to transparency and communication", to use their own words.
"Lastly, Alpha 1 is "still on target for its 4th Quarter 2018 launch" according to the PR sent to us earlier today. July will be the last chance for fans to purchase Alpha 1 access, so if you've been waiting, don't wait too long."

Are you spending $5K to maybe play in a hockey league in 3 years? Or are you spending $5K on tangible items that you use every day and will own forever?
People can blow their money on whatever they want, but we can also laugh at them for doing so.
I dont think people who /gasp at 500++ early backer fees are necessarily poking fun at the people that buu them, but rather at the ballsiness level of the devs to just go "1k plz" like its nothing.
For what its worth i personally feel 100 is my max to crowdfund anything and ive done it for a good half dozen mmos.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

That's really where the mockery comes in, the fact people are buying privileged access if not outright advantage in these gaming purchases.
In the hockey equipment example, that's just a necessary fee to participate. Nothing about it is an advantage over others and is obtainable by all.
I recall how my father and his friends who were all top tier golfers would laugh at the rich, but clearly less talented players who would like every year, purchase very expensive equipment such as "Ping" irons hoping to improve their game.
It didn't of course, which made it OK actually, but in MMO gaming, the advantage can be very real.
If these folks were actually "donating" 5K to see the game made and receiving nothing which gave any advantage, I'd be commending them for their noble actions to see the game's completion.
But understanding their actual motivations, yeah, the mockery will continue.

Actually a lot of gear in hockey especially for goalies can give you an advantage. It is obtainable by all by spending the extra money just like early access or items you get for donating are obtainable to all by spending extra money.
As a golfer myself a new set of "expensive" clubs can actually help out a golfer a lot. You can hit your ball further, the newer more expensive clubs are more forgiving so your shot is more accurate etc etc. Sure buying a new set every year might be a little excessive but expensive clubs like "ping" would improve a players game.
I suggested you stick to "educating" the "ignorant" new posters what the definition of mmo and sandbox/themepark are. Sports ard obviously a bit over your head.

Not entire true. Both could be the reason you win or lose depending on if you bought the ship/club or not.
He said sports equipment "does not give an advantage " that statement is 100% false.

Fair enough. However, the continued effectiveness of that driver is not dependent upon the developers after you purchase it. Those products are bought as-is and the specifications are known. The manufacturer isn't going to sneak into your garage and alter the composition or build of the driver after you bought it. Software devs here hold all the cards and reserve the right to remove, add, or alter cards to your deck even after you're paid them for it based on the information regarding the deck at the time.

Sure they do. That's why every year they release a new model (dlc/update/xpac).
When I bought my Taylormade R15 in 2015 I guarantee they had the knowledge and technology they put into their M series the following year. I bought the R15 knowing they would have a superior product in less than a year. Those who purchased, donate or pay for these kickstarter know what they are getting, and or not getting. Just like I knew my R15 was going to be "obsolete" in a year.

That's not analogous, because they can't alter the specs of the club you purchased after you paid for it.
.... the cash shop and monthly skin sales already in pre-alpha not so much.
Hopefully it doesn't turn into a cash grab and Steve and IS puts out a quality product that justifies having skin sales so early in a game that hasn't launched yet. Founder packs I get it. But monthly skin sales on top of packs? Would be lying if this did not have me concerned. Curious to see how it pans out.

His ramp up so far indicates he clearly has more funding beyond what the crowdfunding has raised.

However, when it comes to specific games I withhold judgment until launch, or in these days Early Access. But it is hard to see how such a game can balance that for launch, or indeed if they would ever want to.
As I already said, showing numbers would fit well with "a commitment to transparency and communication", to use their own words.
maybe the last hyped game in my list (mmo genre)
an alpha in winter should be great!

For what its worth i personally feel 100 is my max to crowdfund anything and ive done it for a good half dozen mmos.

What, me worry?
He said sports equipment "does not give an advantage " that statement is 100% false.
