Was it not the original GW that let you jump into PvP instead of going up the levels, not sure how balanced that was? As a regional faction pvp fan I see nothing wrong with having a top level guy who does your PvP but is held back for say items until the PvE avatar gets to top level.

You would just have to be careful about the interplay between the two avatars, just as you do about the effect PvP has on PvE and visa versa.
Not exactly, GW had 2 kinds of characters: PvP only and the ones you played in both. The PvP only character bought ability and gear by PvPing, the up leveled PvE/PvP character could do that but often PvEd gear and skills.

The biggest advantage was that you could start PvPing direct, you were weaker, sure, but not so much. Many people didn't want to play through the campaign several times since it might not have that great replay value. People tend to forget how long the leveling took before Factions came out where you could max out a character in 12 hours or so.

It wasn't a perfect system and it tended to spllit up PvPers and PvEers more then most games but it did have many advantages as well. It is still the closest to an E-sport MMOs ever came.

To be honest.. the best PvP i ever played was WarHammer 40K Eternal Crusade,

It's a pity the game had so many other issues, the balance between melee and ranged.. was damn near perfect.

If the PvP does not affect the PvE and vice versa, it is just not a part of the game. You have a game, and a PvP instance. Mobas and battle royale games integrate both in smaller and shorter scale. In LoL you have PvE, which is important part of the gameplay up to level 6. Then you can use the mobs as a weapon and you have to defend the turrets from the mobs. Actually it is a typical MMORPG limited to 5 characters and probably an hour of gameplay. But you have all the elements - gear progression, character progression, quests, PvP and PvE. All integrated into one multiplayer game.

The main problem of games like GW2, ESO and etc. is that they are singleplayer in the core. So any multiplayer activity - even if it is a PvE, interrupts the gameplay. If GW2 had open world dungeons, it would be a nightmare, or open world ESO. There is not a conflict between the PvP and the PvE, and never was such. There is an obvious conflict among the solo and the multiplayer gameplay. You can solo play in a multiplayer game, even in LoL. But you cannot really play multiplayer in a solo game. That is why games like GW2, ESO, WoW and etc. have instances for multiplayer gameplay and lack of long term multiplayer goals like guild wars, territory control and etc.

GW was different, it was more like 2 rather different games in one, it was not a singleplayer game in the core, it was one PvP game and one multiplayer game. And GW:Factions actually had a kind of territory control as well as guilds fighting at eachothers guildhalls (well, that last was in from the basegame).

GW2 actually have a couple of uninstanced "dungeons", and yes, they get chaotic. GW2s real problem as I see it is more that it's massive combat system works badly. That is a general MMO problem but most MMOs don't try to have massive combat.

@ikcin If you want to deliver a certain type of RPG content, the istance is the only way. Other than that, the Dynamic event system helps you to feel less alone.

Back to PvP, the problem I found in large scale PvP (Gw2 WWW for example) is that your experience depends on several hundreds other players. I was able to enjoy many WWW game sessions with my guild, but there's been many other occasion when there was too much zerg, not enough people in our side, bad commanding etc. And it wasn't funny.

I'm sorta in holding mode for PVP games. There's a few good PVP games comming out in the next year or so, or at least will be close enough to release to be playable. Alla, CU and Crowfall. But both right now arn't really there yet.

I just got into the REND alpha which is faction based and it's pretty fun as well, although as with CU and CF it still needs 6+ months in the oven at least.

ESO is fun but it's PVP mode is too tacked on. Same with GW2. It's not that the PVP modes are bad .They are just too disconnected form the main game. One of the few things that old Warhammer did well. You could always play that, there's a semi-popular unoffical server for it, but it's got serious population problems like most unofficial servers.

EVE PVP is fun, but pretty tedious. It's also VERY inactive for a modern game.

For good solid PVP your prolly gonna have to play one of the 10,000 games on the BR bandwagon, or just do like I do and fire up SFV.  zangief FTW.
