Opposed to popular opinion, I still think SWTOR is a good MMO. Sure, it got severely watered down by years of garbage updates without real content, removal of skill tree (like wow) and lootbox galore, but I've never thought the game itself was like... BAD, bad. only reasons for me ever quitting was from raid group hitting wall and not being able to full clear NiM raids

There are parts of SWTOR I like and still play from time to time.  I miss the class stories.  They were one of the best things about the game.

I remember when people here spit in my face for saying Warframe was a MMO. Now that it has the numbers behind it i only see one person disputing it being on this list.. seems like some of you old people are changing your tune... that's good.

As I always say the only way to see the genre grow is to embrace change and new ideas.

MMO's can be so profitable, I'm just not sure why no one has been able to get the formula right since WOW.

Make a game exactly like wow's formula but base it on starwars and call it SWG 2 and you will have a new king. Truly a sad list of games on here to call MMO's

Its called SWTOR, its pretty fun for the story stuff alone. I rec, Agent, Jedi Knight, and Sith Warrior. Some of the best writing in Bioware history tbh good enough to be KOTOR 3, 4, and 5.

    The MMO part? eh...

Err, we are focusing on the fact 9 of the 10 are actual MMOs, while Warframe is the one exception.

Few believe it belongs on the list.

How wrong is the world of MMORPGs to make that list the best MMORPGs of the moment.....

The only one who gets off and who is a gentleman game is Eve online, all the others of MMORPG have little, are online action games, little socialization, focused on playing alone.....

Who was going to say after the first and second generation of MMORPGs that years later we would be so bad.

MMOs as I remember them died a long time ago when they became the quick fix buy your way through. Of course even old games took on this new approach so as a sane person, I left to do other things and actually make back on my investments.

The good news is there are tons and tons of things to occupy ones time that don't require a massive investment of said time. If one what's to explore the world then put on your reality helmet and get going!

Warframe - While it is a great game, it is NOT an MMO. At best it's a co-op third person action shooter. Packing ~30 people in a social hub does not an MMO make.

WoW - Undisputed king of MMO's. It's still a good game, but I've retired and never going back. It's not the amazing game it was during WotLK anymore. By pioneering the LFG system they in my opinion crippled the social side of the game, and every other MMO that copies the feature.

BDO - This might be a fun game if the majority of the players were not farming bots.

SWL - Just as bland as the original.

    GW2 - I'm currently playing with a few friends.

FFXIV - If I had friends to actually play it with, I would.

ESO - If I had friends to actually play it with, I would.

The big problem I have with MMO's these days is to appeal to all audiences they throw in too much convenience and instant gratification. Those conveniences cripple the social game by removing the need for people to actually work and communicate with other people. In my opinion if an MMO can and is being played like a single player game where you occasionally run into other players, it has failed as an MMO. An MMO should encourage social interaction and not allow players to avoid social interaction.

MMOs haven't gotten better or worse, or at least so I feel. What changed was the community and MMO devs trying to make bank. The average MMO player does not want to spend half an hour getting a group together for a dungeon, followed by a 15min run to said dungeon and that's before that damned dungeon with it's daily reward even started! The average player simply wants to hit a keybind, select his role and expect the game to come up with a solution 1 min ago. And they'll repeat the process again, again and again. And then some.

We don't want time and money sinks anymore, we have needs now and devs will aim to provide. This isn't limited to MMOs, it's what our daily life has become. You can now order groceries via the internet, collect, pay and go. No more wasting time in the store, no silly conversations with the person at the register. Sometimes we want to go out and have a decent lunch, but most of the time we want a Mcdonald's because we're hungry now. And please do not speak to the person ordering before me, cause you know... you have quotas to meet and I have stuff to do. Stuff! Don't ask what stuff, I don't know, just stuff.

We're too far gone now, this is the new standard for MMOs and we better get used to it or move on.
Which is why I've grown to appreciate games like Life is Feudal MMO and Gloria Victis. Oh I don't play em, you know, too time-consuming. But I do appreciate them. :)

It's an instant gratification society now. It has probably been this way since 2000 maybe even a little before that.

Firstly... Warframe is not an MMO, its an instance based co-op game

Second... Not a single one of the MMO's in this list has anything to do with 2018 at all...

Taking the example of WoW... WoW is a 2004 MMO, not a 2018 MMO, the expansion Battle for Azeroth is a 2018 expansion, but that is not even remotely the same thing as saying "WoW is one of the best 2018 MMOs"

Please can you start writing articles about more relevant things!

total snooze fest.... none of these games are from 2018 and who thought to put eve online (2003) on this list.. i think u are missing ultima online too :D

By far the dumbest list of 2018:

    Neverwinter - 2013
    Eve Online - 2003
    Guild Wars 2 - 2012
    Final Fantasy 14 - 2010
    ESO - 2014
    Warframe - 2013
    WoW - 2004
    Trove - 2015
    Secret World -  2012
    BDO - 2014

    P.S.

Bill i love your videos and columns .. but what did you smoke before you wrote this list?
Except it's not a best of released mmo's of 2018, it's a list of mmo's that are shining examples in 2018.
As well as a great example for making a case that not many great MMOs have been released in recent years.

The classics are still the best sometimes.
Bill is just being smart.  He can release the same article every year for the next few years and call it new.  The games aren't going to change until something new actually releases.  Imagine how much work Bill will save from this strategy.  A pre-necroed article.  Brilliant!

Because the MMO genre is on a downward slide. It hit the top of the bell curve about a decade ago and got oversaturated with subpar MMO's. Since then most businesses don't want to take the chance on them. Gamers anymore prefer quick efficiency that FPS's and MOBA's offer to the time gating and patient waiting of MMO's.

Personally I prefer MMO's because I like worlds like UO and what WoW used to be but if an MMO wants to survive in the current world they need to offer more convenience methods (LFG, quick battlegrounds, etc.)

You say this when a dumb game like Fortnite is going to make an estimated 2 BILLION dollars this year...
MMO's are not on on downward slide. Make a good game, and you will get paid!
