I'd say playing Elite Dangerous is more Sci Fi Sim, Much more serious like EVE in the sense that it is a real universe. No Mans Sky is more like a Saturday morning cartoon or a comic book. I dont know if that makes sense but its the best way i can describe it .
I feel like ED has less to do but provides a more realistic setting, like i said a sim experience. No Mans Sky is Arcade with more to do. If you like one i think you will like the other.
Hopefully docking is easier in NMS. ED was a nightmare. I think they thought I really wanted to fly an actual space ship, complete with insane UI/key bindings. I'm thinking about picking up NMS...although I prefer combat and PvE character building much more than survival and building structures.
It is. In ED you have to follow some basic rules, slow down when nearing the station, contact station to get landing permission and make sure your landing gear is down and for gods sake keep a keybind image guide next to your KB/mouse or hotas/joystick till you know your stuff by heart. It not that difficult unless you have a really bad controller set up. For example I can't play ED to save my life on a controller or with kb/mouse but with a joystick and kb or hotas is sooo much easier for me.
ED is more sim like when it comes to handling and flying but it's no where near DCS level of simulation and people that think ED is super hard to land have never played a real sim and are really looking for arcade type control.
NMS is far more arcady, not saying there's anything wrong with this but they are really different beasts.
You are completely right. I've never really played hardcore sims before and landing in ED and the controls in general are just overwhelming. I would love to try a hotas / joystick but investing into one just to try it out doesn't seem really worth it.
I've been trying to get into ED lately, but I don't really know what to do to make money in the beginning, it seems like the only real option is bringing cargo from X to Y, or mining as combat I just get railed instantly in the starting ship.
The multiplayer is weird in this. I think there must be a way to hack it easily, or for them to fix it to make it better. If you join someone else's game, you are asked to create your own new game. And once you have joined they can quit and you can still play on your own . . . but you can't replay that game unless they are online to join. It seems as if they just put that new saved game in the same place your normal saved games would go you could continue without the other players being online. That would allow more and more people to join the same game . . . but I would think they could fix that if they wanted to as well. I'm going to experiment with moving the save file around.
