Maybe that's why they call it Monster Hunter not Monster Social Worker.
Saves another 20 min of fighting. There's still the chance of accidentally killing it, or waiting too long for the monster to recover.

I don't think that is accurate. I did many "Capture" type investigations, and they all provided me with a shock trap and tranq bombs + the 2 trap tools (which is nice because it helps increase your own inventory of traps without having to buy them from the provisoner).
But maybe I'm still not far enough in the main story line (just got passed Anjanath) or my hunter rank is still too low?
Regardless, it's certainly best to have your own inventory, because "Hunt" type investigations, for which you can either capture or slay the monsters, won't give you any of these and as stated, it seems more profitable to capture when possible (only "Slay" investigations force you to actually kill the monsters).
I haven't done many because I started trying them late, but I've noticed the contents of the box slacking off as I've moved on to harder kill missions. My assumption is that trapping will do the same.
1. You do not get increased rewards from capturing monsters. This has been confirmed by Capcom. The primary reason to trap is to shorten the fight, since monsters become weakened at about 20% HP. The best way to maximize rewards is to break / slice off any parts, then trap.
2. Traps have diminishing returns. Your third paralysis trap won't last as long as your first and, while I've never seen a monster become immune to them, your fourth trap will hold them about 1/3 of the time of the first. These diminishing returns aren't shared between trap types though, each one is separate.
3. Elder dragons are immune to traps, so you can only kill them. Dropping a trap just makes you look like an idiot.
4. You can carry one of each trap type. Carrying tools isn't really necessary, since you can always go back to camp to resupply. Also, every capture mission gives you tranq bombs and traps, but it's best to have a good supply of your own as well.
5. The easiest way to trap a monster is to fight until it starts limping away. Follow at a distance until it reaches its lair, and let it go to sleep. Walk up next to it, drop two tranquilizers (it won't wake up from this), then set up your trap. The second it goes off, you'll get the capture. The tranquilizers also stay active for about a minute, so even if some jackass wakes it up before you can get your trap set up, you can still lure it into one for the victory without re-applying them.
6. It's criminally underused, but meat can be used to lure monsters into traps. You can also use drugged / poisoned meat to inflict their respective status effects. This works better on monsters who are tired (slow attacks, more easily staggered, drooling) or limping.
7. The last monster you captured can actually be seen peacefully sleeping in Astoria, in a cage of course.
I mean no offense, but you really should get people who are knowledgeable about the game's mechanics to write articles like this. There's no real misinformation here, but there isn't much useful information either, even for a new player. I think the diminishing returns on traps is probably the most glaring omission, as carelessly utilizing traps can really screw you later on in the fight.
