During Gamescom 2018, our pals Ed and Gareth were able to be among the first to get hands-on time with Echtra and Perfect World’s Torchlight Frontiers - the brand new MMO ARPG based on the Torchlight franchise formerly of Runic Games. They also spoke to studio founder Max Schaefer about many of the finer details of how Frontiers will play - from housing to randomization, progression and gear, day and night cycles and more.

The gameplay video looks SO good. Very smooth animations, just have to see how responsive it is and what the game will be like at the higher levels.

The idea of Diablo-style clearing rooms without even having to click is just stupid to me.

I sincerely hope that they include the engineer or engineer type class. Spider mines and Turrets are the best!

Pretty sure the character building the tracks was an engineer in the video......

So everything respawns while you are still in the map - like in other MMO hybrids.

You cant clear our maps like you can in PoE, Diablo, Grim Dawn and Torchlight 1 and 2 where the only time mobs respawn is on zone entering

Respawns are a MMO mechanic to enable multiple players to hunt the same area, but to me this never felt right in ARPGs.

This could mean just in the overworld, but not in the dungeon instances. Those could still act as they do in TL1 and 2. Which would be fine, and make sense for shared overworld maps.

Respawns are only in shared areas. Private areas are still clearable as before.

I would like to know some more about monetization before getting hyped too much by this interview,

I don’t understand the hype for this I have TL2 and I don’t like it as much as I like D3 and with Perfect World as publisher it’s even worst.

It's more than likely exactly what it means.  Don't know why you would automatically assume the least likely interpretation of that information but....*shrug*

This states a lot of things I really like hearing - like a focus on multiple characters and no one character being able to do everything. Even multiple characters of the same class for a different specialty/focus.

The only thing that has me worried is that I just can't seem to get into an arpg mmo, or any of the ones that have came out so far at least.

I am definitely looking forward to this game and hope I enjoy it, even though I did not really enjoy Torchlight 1 or 2 for more than a couple hours a piece.

I appreciate that he took time to dance through their definition of MMO and explaining the shared world experience more clearly.

We'll see how they sell the game. I'm very picky about that these days, because I can be. I'm not doing revenue stream. I'll do box-fee and DLC, but no cash shops, rmt, loot crates, or microtransactions.
He already mentions they are exploring cash shop options so I guess you're out of luck.

"Examples of some item store ideas for Torchlight Frontiers so far include buyable maps that have increased magic find or gold drops. If you group with one player using this map, everyone in the party gets it. Max said it’ll also be possible to earn such maps in game without spending cash."

Aw, this confirms it. The game is nothing like what I thought it would be from watching the intro/teaser trailer. Ah well, long ago I enjoyed a single-player iso game called Freedom Force, so I suppose I might like a multiplayer action iso game.

Thanks for the article, I'd like to know all I can about this game, been waiting for a Torchlight game for years and this one seems to even above what I expected so hoefhopef it'll turn out as it should be: amazing!

Its the hope of PWE not controlling how this game is put out. Maybe they will just be the publisher and if the game has a box price that could be good. But if it goes straight to a PWE F2P game then it could suck badly. Remember Subnautica was under PWE and had a box price so the it wasn't bad.

Game looks interesting, but the hint at monetization already discourages me a bit.

I don't think there's any PvP planned, right?  If not, I don't think those items are game-breaking.  It affects party members, so as a fellow player who doesn't purchase them, you can still get the benefits for free simply by grouping with folks who have them.

I would hold off and wait on judging this to harshly , it sounds like the same exact Mapworks mechainic from Torchlight 2 , which really is not such a big deal you can get maps with different mods on it for gold , I would assume that they would implement the ability to get them with in game currency as well ..

If similar to The Mapworks its not really a big deal at all

From want ive seen so far they are taking T2 upgrading graphics/engine  adding coop multi player similar to Drakensang ..

A Cosmetic shop would serve them well ala POE

I'm starting to get more interested. Loved the original TL's. PvE, encouraging alts, pets... sounds pretty good so far. Because it's PvE there's no real P2W worries, and the cash shop initially sounds ok in a 'use-it-or-not' sort of way.
    Worth keeping an eye on.

It will depend upon the implementation.  If there's player goals that include grinding exorbitant amounts of resources like gold, then it's a poor implementation because it hamfistedly tries to open your wallet to nickel and dime.

The fact that the buff is shared with party members leads me to believe, at least at this time, that there's consideration being given to ensure the game doesn't punch you in the face every time you login with the need to spend more cash on microtransactions.

Man i still play T2 modded with some of the coolest classes. I wish they would do something like player contest to let modders create classes for the game.

My favorite zone in Marvel Heroes was constantly respawning mobs and bosses and I had no issue with it.
