It's been in alpha for what, five years now? It was supposed to launch four years ago! I'm sorry, but the whole 'it's an alpha' excuse is patently ridiculous at this point. With the time and money they've had, there's absolutely no good reason why the game is in its current state. None.
Bah, forget it. Five years from now you people will be using the same excuse to dismiss complaints, and calling everyone who has an opinion of the game different than your own 'trolls'.

I dont understand why all you people dont open ur eyes here..the game will never be finished and if they need 10 billion and 10 years to only make it this far then i pray for SC company. Cuz they need it.
And why da fuk do they invite people to see what a turd sandwitch this is..they are scaring people away.
But again i dont understand why you people in heer and in sc wake the hell up and see the real picture here..i dont care of its alpha or zeta or kappa or beta version...WAKE UP
WAKE UP DAMMIT !!!

Kind of a silly premise then if you think about it... from a companies perspective, reflecting on the community.... what's the point of having "free weekends" if they aren't in a stage of beta where they're stress testing?
Lets be honest with how they expected it to go, it's very likely they expected people to dig what is offered and put some money up to continue playing during development.
Most development companies don't try to entice players with free weekends during an alpha, that's generally reserved for testing. FREE testing.
It's a rather standard practice, even AAA titles have been giving free access during early testing phases.
So quite frequent to see these days Alpha games with the free tests, or the more common giveaways of keys for testing events. Is all about marketing, letting play for free always has a conversion rate that results in new players buying the game.
Which ones? AAA titles don't do that, if anything they give you early access when you purchase a game, I can't think of one in recent memory that gave a limited free play ALPHA.
All those people crying "It's an ALPHA!!" seem to forget that the game has been in alpha for 4 years now and while it runs a bit better and you can have more players per server the game itself remains super janky.
@DarkestOverlord They did have a tutorial at one point but that thing got all broken to hell and so they pulled it.

Couldnt agree more...They've generated more thru kickstarter than any other MMO that I am aware of and have over 500 people working on this...Heck even games with 2 people working on them are futher ahead....and will it shock anyone if they have another ridiculous ship sale after this?
I see a lot of people making a statement that the game is nowhere near finished. Well yeah, duh. So why would they have an open weekend for people to try out the game if it's in such a horrible state? It's like Early Access games on STEAM. People go in expecting a finished product, but as long as the game runs decent, not having complete content is rarely a game breaking issue. It's the Early Access games that are so severely broken that they shouldn't even qualify as Early Access. So which version of Early Access is Star Citizen? A working rendition that's not yet feature complete or a pile of shit catastrophe that shouldn't be offering free weekends?
Its in the middle tbh. Its not just light on content, it really is alpha. Its also not a pile of shit, but it isn't a game yet either. Crowfall for instance feels much more like a game already, SC isn't there yet.
SC is in actual Alpha, through the years many seem to have forgotten what that entails. Whether it has been in Alpha too long or if too many people have wasted too much money on this to make its state excusable is a different discussion. Me? I think they are ambitious and slow, they should focus on the core tasks first. It isn't a scam though.

So, any idea why they would venture a free weekend? From a developer point of view, that never ends well when your game is in the state SC is in. I mean, there has to have been a purpose for it, other than exposure, even if it was poor exposure.
Not all exposure is good exposure, but I don't think that is the goal of the free weekend. I think it is to promote CIG as a company by showing goodwill, 'Here, have a free weekend on the house,' it is just as much for current backers.
And they have to. The longer the game takes, the less income they will generate through new customers and they will need to keep their existing base happy and ready to spend, what better way then showing how great the company is.

They need more money for the development and they need it now.
Also they've got a great hype machine. People who get a great game now, play it, and then move on aren't as good source of income as people who don't play it now but believe in the vision, wait, and keep buying more ships.
The game is still at the pre Alpha stage, there is every indication that this will be the case for an appreciable time to come, all the free access was done in order to allow people the opportunity to discover for themselves what the game may well become. They are 'selling a dream' hopefully they can turn much of that dream into reality, but the time frame involved is probably more than many are prepared to accept. There is also the possibility that the project will have to be discontinued before completion, it may well be that the game that they are trying to build just isn't possible. But if they do manage to build it, that is something i would very much like to see.
I do get the impression from their endless development videos that they need to spend more time on game and less on graphics. Only every so often do you see anything in those videos about gameplay.
The point isn't the state of the alpha - it's an alpha, you expect lag/bugs etc.
The point is a demo/free weekend designed to attract new/casual/first-look players needs a tutorial so players can get playing as quickly and easily as possible.
"Oh you have to use your brain". That's an attitude for core game mechanics, not for interface/usability design. The best interfaces are intuitive to use, and have a great set of tutorials.
I dont think that the free fly weekend is a good idea from CIG at this stage off the game...
Btw...people should be grateful that thay can try the game out for free.
If you dont like its your problem, there is no need to whine on the forums...
This forum is not a church where we go to worship MMOs. If a game gave you bad experience talking about it is allowed, just like talking about the good experiences that a game gives you is allowed.
The OP might have benefited from FIRST watching one of the many player made "First steps in Star Citizen" Videos. It is a good substitute for the currently deactivated in game tutorial.
>>> Games are not ment to use ur brain anymore. >>>
No, Star Citizen is not a game for those playing without needing to use their brains. That group of players should better move on to other games. Those kind of players will probably never like SC.
In the past free fly weekends have brought thousands of new players to SC. And SC was in a worse state back then than it is now. So it seems to be working as a marketing tool.

The fact you do not like that the game has been in alpha for years, does not change the fact it is one alpha and has the type of issues we witness in alpha games, it does not become one excuse just because you wish the game was later in development at this point.
Not judging a product on its progression only makes sense if no crowd-funding is involved. So, sure, if you're not planning to give them money until it actually releases (if it actually releases), then yeah keep complaints to constructive criticism, maybe some things you'd like to see added/adjusted that might get you more interested in the project. However, I'd like to hear the honesty of those backing a good % (say 1k+) and how they feel things are going for them in terms of progress to maybe get them to invest more or if they are having second thoughts. I dont think anyone likes buyer's remorse if it can be avoided.
Which ones? AAA titles don't do that, if anything they give you early access when you purchase a game, I can't think of one in recent memory that gave a limited free play ALPHA.
AAA in terms of alpha is more uncommon, but The New World MMO is going to do it, considering that in development by Amazon I wouldn't call it any Indie MMO. AAA is more used to do this with betas and few months before release.
For now they want the player of this alpha to consider the potential and contribute cash towards the dream I doubt it is an actual game meant to attract people who want to play the game. People who have tried may want to contribute to make the idea a reality. Being in this alpha stage it probably is not very good and even confusing but OP, may be you are not the target audience. If they get more money into their coffers than the objective of this alpha would have been realised.
My friend and me installed game with high hype and here the nightmare started..first of the game was laggy and poorly optimized..even the controles was horrible prolly due to lag and bad optimizing.
Then we spend like 1 H just to join the same server and try to use the invite to party. We had to watch youtube and read guides and allmost ask in the white house just to seach for clues how to invite each other..we managed to somehow login on the same server by random chance but we never got to be in same party.
Then 30 min later we managed to find out how we got the ship ready and he choosed some kind decent looking spaceship and i choosed a dragon something..then we laughed hard because his ship was like a huge motherload of a ship and i only had this space scooter looking thing...
By now he tryed to start his spaceship and got frustratet over how to actutaly controle it and take off because he was allready bummed out of the whole game. I wanted to fly this dame thing like a last thing to do before i quit the game for good.
So i entered the ship and pressed the power on botton and something with B key to enable something that was half assed explained.
Then i pressed another key and the engine started to spin and i was ready to take off..or i was hoping to fly soon. Tnen i pressed another key that was glowing yellow..that could be the handbrake or something....But no..it was the jumpseat botton and i ejected out in space and died...
It was the most horrible game i ever tryed..no guides ..no welcome..i know some people would say
" its a use ur brain game huehuehue" Its 2018 here people...we dont think anymore we just do stuff here and now.
Gamesarenotmenttouseurbrain anymore..wake up devs
We spend more time out of the game reading up on old and crappy guides that gave us nothing but wasted time..
And btw wasent this ment to be ready 2014 starting on it 2012..Using way 2 much time..if they need to boil this soup any longer then they will end up overboiling the meatballs and they will loose the taste..prolly allready 2 late if you ask me.
But i wish you god speed and have a great succes with ur over boiled soup *gg
'Only smart people will play this' probably isn't the best message to be sending the SC die hards right now.
