I'll play new games a lot until the newness wears off then it goes into my regular rotation of MMO's. I've never come across a game so good it's made me drop other games for more than a few months, let alone years.
Now I'm going to feed my horses in ESO, send my crew out on missions in STO, and fight that world boss in GW2.

I'm starting to wonder....is it not alright for a dev team to develop a game that "isn't for you"?
This kind of mentality always reminds me of Vanguard. Also, the worries presented reminds me of Vanguard as well.
I played Vanguard for a while, not at launch though because that was a disaster. I played a Dread Knight tank and I would try to get groups every night. When I couldnt get a group(which was pretty much every night) I would solo what I could for a bit then log off.
When I did find a group we would do a dungeon mostly or some questing hot spot. Inevitably after an hour or 2 someone would leave and we would try to get a replacement but couldnt so the group would break up from there.
And when anyone would criticize the game or suggest modern conveniences someone would be there to say "The game isnt for you, go back to WoW you baby"
Then people would wonder why WoW had millions of subscribers and Vanguard was dead.

someone would be there to say "The game isnt for you, go back to WoW you baby"
To which you shot back "isn't" has an apostrophe!
j/k Sorry someone acted that way.
I wonder what game people who say they don't like WOW get told to go back to?
Gonna take bets "GW2" given it's rep for being stupidly casual friendly.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

You ever notice few people ever admit to playing the stupid, casual or shitty game, which are terms normally reserved for the game they aren't playing.
Someone out there has to be playing the "bad" games, right?
Well perhaps not people like me who aren't playing any MMORPGs because they all suck.... yeah, I know, clearly a personal issue.

As is often the case with the OPs threads, it is a 'sum of all fears' starting with assumptions which really weren't true such as the classic "first generation = devote all of your time."
Perhaps this was the case in early EQ, it wasn't in DAOC, Lineage 1/2, & Shadowbane which all MMOs I played pre WOW.
DAOC was the most grouping intensive of the lot, especially levels 40 to 50, but even there I did a lot of soloing.
Once I started multi boxing using power leveling capable alts grouping became entirely optional and I only did it at my convenience, mostly to help guildies or fight for the realm.
My guess is Pantheon will offer a standard mix of grouping or solo, but if it doesn't its not something to dread, unless like the OP you believe Pantheon is the last and only hope for MMORPG gaming.
He's exaggeraring somewhat, true. The IDEA is correct. I know p1999 isn't 100% like original Eq, but it does require more time." It's just something not many people enjoy, but enough enjoy to keep the serve alive.
It does require more time. It does have a higher demand. For example, if you're in a group, it's hard to just leave without consequences to yourself or the group. If you walk away without warning or preparation, your character will probably die, get lost, or your gropu might disband after it wipes. If you solo it can be easier. The more you know, the easier it gets. If you're soloing as a necro or monk or sk you can feign death and almost immediately be afk without the danger of death.
Delete tried p1999 but suffered from not knowing enough about the game and not having enough time to get into it. It's a hard game for someone new to it. Especially this is true for anybody familiar with more modern MMO's. It also requires a loto f patience. You have to enjoy to chat with others because of the downtime. I tend to enjoy the slower pace. Maybe it's because my mind isn't fast. It's the polar opposite of some modern MMO's where the group is racing from one thing to another like a marathon.
Bioware gave out some interesting information regarding how much time people spent playing swtor during the initial month.
The average player did 4-6 hours gaming sessions.
The average player spent 40 hours per week playing the game.
There are thousands and thousands of mobile games if you want to spend 5-45 minutes but the average PC gamers is generally fine with spending 2 hours each time they play a game.
Link please
Maybe in first month
I currently play SWTOR and honestly few in my guild put in that time in a single block .
On raids you see people get annoyed if the zone is not done in 2 hours!
This whole game's success will hinge on how they release. If they go too hardcore out of the gate they will never recover. Kinda like Wildstar, albeit a different kind of hardcore.

To be fair, there were few areas in the initial release that couldnt be done by 3 people who knew their shit, so the game did give a lot of slack. Admitedly if your healer left it was a problem. But not finding players was primarly an issue with the fact the game pop plummeted from 240k to 40k within the first 2 months, those few remaining tended to form tight knit communities so rarely were there many spare people hanging around available for random pugs

I get home from work and my wife has dinner cooked and the computers already fired up and logged in
Still only get about two hours a night before I have to start getting ready for bed.
