What a joke. Lets put aside the absurdity of a video game being a sport for a second. Ninja isn't even a top 5 Fortnite player. To site twitch views and popularity as a reason to be on ESPN just undercuts eSports even more than it already is.

While I don't think it's absurd to consider video games as a sport (not a physical sport obviously) if things like Chess and Poker are able to be on sports channels and covers. Ninja is #1 in kills on Fortnite, and #9 currently in total wins. That puts him pretty high up there, and why wouldn't they have someone who is literally the most popular streamer (of all time) of the most popular game on there? It isn't like he is a low tier player, hes still one of the best. He's literally the face of the game right now. Not that I like him at all, I actually tried to watch his stream twice before and turned it off in less than 2 minutes because I hate his personality, but I'm just pointing out facts.

All he has to do is still behave and sound like a pre-teen on his stream and his career will know no bounds.

I am referring to tournament stats, which are the only stats that matter. As for popularity, sports are about competition and who is the best. The first gamer on ESPN should be the best player, not the most popular one.

Chess and Poker aren't real sports either, otherwise literally everything is a sport. Lets put competitive crossword puzzles on ESPN while we're at it.

Watched twice his stream for like 5 minutes... not funny(he tries, but it's too forced), not particularly witty, not mature(acts like a 14 year old), definitely really good at the game... still if i have to watch a stream I personally prefer people who are actually entertaining. It's beyond me why so many people watch him when as it was pointed out he isn't the best and when it comes to entertainment he isn't even top 500 on twitch imho.
Still he makes millions, so I doubt our opinion matters to him :P

#1 in kills and #9 in wins....sounds good till you take into account the amount of games played to reach those stats is nearly double the person behind him...so yeah....while he is an excellent player he isn't even in the top 10 when it comes to pros.

Also it does take an insane amount of reflexes and real time strategy thinking to play these games....hand eye coordination needs to be on point....while it isn't as physical as soccer or basketball it still deserves to be called a sport....I mean shit, if we are gonna call curling a sport then fortnite is a no brainier....

Still a good cover...nothing wrong with putting a celebrity who can play well on there...it brings attention to esports...it's basically the same as when Danica Patrick got all those covers even though she isnt near as good as most pros....people know her and she's decent....sells more magazines than the best person nobody knows about

^^^^ Truth right here. I cannot stand him for this very reason. This kids a joke. His skills are extremely good but him as a person, can't stand. By no means should video game players be labeled as "athletes". No fuckin way. Most of these "pros" look like they couldn't even throw a baseball the proper way. Zero athleticism.

I've watched the odd darts tournament on sports channels just to hear the announcer say "ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY!!!!" The well developed beer guts of most of the top players is also something I can relate to :)

Y'all are just jelly...lol just playing. Game tournaments are fun to watch and people get in to them watching there favorite teams play just like people sit and watch football. HOWEVER, I don't agree that it is being labeled as a "sport". I'm also not sure why a sports network would be putting his face on there magazine when there are great athletes that should be there instead.

The definition of "sport" is : An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. - Its all there expect the "Physical" part, unless you want to argue clicking, and key pressing as being physical, and don't pull the well you burn blah blah calories typing. No it is not on the physical level as "sports"

It should have been put in its own category (and I don't mean E sports) and distanced its self from ESPN and sports in general. This is how I feel about it but that's the great thing about an opinion its mine and everyone has there own.

It's marketing.  ESPN has a stake in esports.  They cover fornite, overwatch, etc.  They are marketing this guy in hopes of attracting a certain demographic to look at their website and tv channels so they can make more money on advertisements.

    It is funny.

To be able to be good at gaming you need practice.

To practice you need lots of spare time combined with dedication.

To have lots of spare time you need to be able to find a way to sustain yourself (AKA paying bills and set your mind free of problems/adult issues).

So, I am pretty sure that these people were born in a lucky environment that allowed them to be able to "live" and spend a lot of time practicing at their said games.

I am sure we all wished we could be that lucky too.

He has a valid reason for not playing with women and it is because of his wife.  He does not want to risk sounding flirty with other women or have the internet start rumors of him hitting on other women.  I do not blame him at all for that.

From what I can see Ninja seems like a decent guy.  There are several videos out there of him playing random games with little kids.  The kids go nuts when they see they are playing with him.

Not familiar with how covers work I see. They don't care who is the best, they want someone people want to read about. I don't watch twitch or care much about who is good in Fortnite, but I have heard of Ninja. Drake was promoting him for a while there.
