GW2, ESO, and FF14RR seem to be the last successful batch of mmos. I don't think anything has come out since that matches those games in terms of quality, gameplay, and popularity. I'm also extremely doubtful that any of the indie mmos in development will amount to anything special.

Its as if western developers have lost the will or ability to make mmos, or maybe the market is just too crowded.

I'd have to add BDO to your list, even though I dont care for the game it clearly is a success.

You are correct, most larger western development houses see no real profit in creating large scale MMORPGs so the genre is relying on the indies to resuscitate it.

What are the "new" MMO's.  I may be out of the loop, but I can't figure out what OP is talking about.  I haven't seen a significant MMO released in years.

Not sure about OP, but I'd still call GW2, FFXIV, and ESO new compared to the old greats like UO, SWG, EQ, etc.

wow as usual the idiots that infest this site are only western centric.  I'd say Blade & Soul also did well, not to mention many other eastern titles that never get mentioned on this site because of western-centric idiocy.

More of a dark science fantasy, AO was my favorite all time MMORPG.

Yes that is exactly what I was referring to too for newer and older mmorpgs.
Started playing mmorpg's in 1996 and have been hooked ever since. It began with Kingdom of Drakkar, Ultima Online, Everquest, DAoC, WoW...

People like what they like and culture obviously has impact on this too. There probably just happens to be a lot of western people on this site which doesn't surprise me as it's a .com site.

I personally don't like the whole style where everything is really over-exaggerated like in most asian (particularly anime style of course) mmorpg's. Much prefer a more realistic/mature western fantasy style.

    Fite meh. >:)

I have still played B&S, BDO and a ton of other more asian style mmo's, but it's just not my style really.

Wow started this design trend along with SOE and EQ2.However EQ2 did at least have housing and more systems,Wow was like the child of EQ2.

Seeing such a simple and easy design to mimic is why the market became flooded with these clones, even easier with modern day engines and tech.

These titles,AL of them since Wow have very few systems and the FOCUS of the games has remained a very simple one>>level fast and kill bosses for loot,,YEAH so much fun...sigh.

As much as I loved FFXI, I could throw that right back. Level slow, camp mobs for hours and hours and hours and hours, maybe get a level, die and lose half of your progress. Most MMOs have few systems, not sure why you re even mentioning that.

To raise of slow level: Of course, we want to raise to the maximum level in 1 or 2 weeks and to remain stopped without knowing what to do....the slight one has to be long and slow to be able to be, but it has to have content (as it had FF XI with Genkais, quest af, quest unblocking of places like Kazham, Aht urgan....)

Farmeo of mobs during hours: BUT in party, it was not phoned without sense, you needed a party balanced with Tanks, buffers, pullers, healers, DDs....and coordination, with skillchains and magic burst to kill faster and be more optimal creating a coordination and fun that is SUPERIOR to spam quest only as WoW or MMOs current.

To die and to lose half of its progress: THIS is necessary at the moment, I am tired of easy MMOs in which it doesn't matter to die, it doesn't matter to die, even it is used to be able to arrive at your quick home point. NO, NOW, NOW. To die has to be painful, and to explore the world something dangerous. Stop casualizing the games even more.

I think we don't need MMORPGs that add anything new, but TRUTH MMORPGs that enhance things that have already been invented.

    For example:

Ragnarok Online: System of team cards, progressive classes and rebirth making your character more customizable. Aesthetics.

Final Fantasy XI: Almost everything is fine, just potentiate more the world as before in epoch 75. But battle system with skillchains/magic burst, importance of Buffers/debuffers, enough of only TANK/DD/HEAL!!!!!!. And quantity of varied events like Nyzul isle, salvage, Limbus, Sea, Einherjar, Sky, HNM, Delve, Reive, Ambuscade, ISNM, BCNM, KSNM....Varied events and UTILES, not like WoW with events in solitary, easy and to remove...appearances.... Also the possibilities of changing equipment, so you do not focus on a single set, you always want pieces for Fast cast, enmity, ws set, mele set ...

Everquest: Variety of classes that does not focus ONLY on the PUTA TRINIDAD. Difficulty, Raids, Giant world.

Tera: Combat system, not as chaotic as Black desert, fun.

Dark age of camelot: Its PVP and atmosphere.

Runescape: Your skills system and your animation system in combat (talk about Runescpae 3 current).

Ultima Online: Skills system, world, environment.

Lineage II: Variety of events, aesthetics, huge world, difficulty.

As we can see there are already many old MMORPGs with wonderful systems, but they fail in some aspects or in the graphics.

Who wants fast games and to make fast games because they have Overwatch or LOL or short online games, but MMORPG would have to be sacrificed games, difficult, to play WITH PEOPLE, the simulation of a persistent world.

Its obvious millions of people want fast games. I loved FFXI, DAOC, EQ, AC, etc etc, but it doesn t make games like WoW bad, just different styles for different people. I happen to like both, but just stating a point from the opposite side.

But how many current MMORPGs have come up with old MMROPG philosophies?

It's not fair, it can't be compared, I find it good to make MMORPG for people who don't like MMORPG like almost all current games, but I would like to see a real Everquest 2 (not the one that came out that was more WoW than Everquest 1 sequel), Ultima Online 2, Final Fantasy XI-2...and see how many players would play the current MMORPG and which ones would play the real MMORPG.
