MMOs You Don't Get?

klash2defklash2def Member EpicPosts: 1,949
We all have that moment. A MMO comes along that a lot of people are really really into but for some reason it does not speak to you. No matter how much you try and try you just cant get into it. You watch other people play it, hear the reviews but you just cant get past the starter zone or level 10. Could be the art style, game-play mechanics, world design, character creation, idk.. but something isn't connecting. What games are like that for you?

For me its Guild Wars 2, FFXIV, The Secret World, Wildstar(RIP) and EVE Online

I know something is great about those games, I just wish I could experience what it is lol

Connecting with a game is more personal. For the past 7 years I yet to find a "great game". What makes a game great to one person might not be great to another. Maybe it is that most games just totally suck. I tend to gravitate towards the latter, sadly...

GW2- never felt like I was progressing, lack of pvp support, one meta style of play(zerker) in pve…..just felt like I had no goals once I got to max level and obtained the look I liked.

@DMKano Interesting that you feel that ESO has heavy handed questing. I actually enjoy ESO's questing. I love that there are so many different stories and you can choose what stories you really want to do. Also ESO is light on the "Fetch me x" type of quests and it makes it really feel like you are making your own story in this world. The leveling is fun because of the amount of customization. I play ESO in first person and it really feels like a "Elder Scrolls" game.

I agree with GW2 the mob scaling and the art direction was just a no for me. I hate how all the armor looks in GW2. Hate. Yuck.

I thought I was going to main Wildstar before I played it. I love Sci-Fi games and this an SWTOR were like the only good sci fi mmos on the market at the time outside of EVE (another game i don't get) but WS has the worse map design I have ever seen. Your quest log fills your map up with a ton of Icons and symbols that they don't really explain the meaning of.. its just messy. I thought the cartoon style was cool but I wasn't in love with the races. Idk it just felt forced and not cool as it marketed itself.

    Don't get or don't like?

There are several MMOs I don't like, but I get what they are about for those who play them. The remake of Secret World I don't get.

Try as I might I couldn't get into Wildstar (RIP). I think there were a bunch of little things that annoyed me that came together into something I couldn't stick with. Three examples were the combat, the crafting (the randomness of food recipes for example), and the challenges that sprang up when you least expected (or wanted) them.

When City of Heroes shut down I tried WoW for a little bit but something seemed off there too. I couldn't get many of the game mechanics and it didn't seem newbie friendly. Maybe I was still stuck in CoH mode which made the transition hard.

STO and Neverwinter were good for a while but the lootcrates were annoying and it was like they pushed you hard to level 50 then didn't know what to do with your character next apart from gear grinding. The daily login rewards were giving me anxiety.

The only game I haven't tried and don't get is EVE. You could spend weeks earning up for some fancy ship and some incel destroys it for kicks as he calls you obscene names. At least EVE keeps the gankers amused and out of other games.

FFXIV, Wildstar, Black Desert, tried these but just couldn't get into them, made it just past the starting zones and that was that.  Defiance, lasted about 15 mins.

I greatly dislike questing in MMOs - and there is no effective way to skip questing in ESO.

You are a dedicated PVPer then? Because all MMOs have questing? That's like 90% of all MMOs the quests..isn't that why we play MMOs?  Also is there a mmo that lets you skip questing?

Edit: The quests in ESO actually affect the world around you. You make choices that effect NPCs and world states for your character and a lot of those NPCs will remember and thank you later if you return. For instance, I was riding my mount to get to a new questing zone and on the way there a Redguard lady on the side of the road stops me and asks me to help her brother get out..I could've said no, but My Templar is also a redguard..I said yes ofc I will help. The brother was wrongly jailed by bandits that decided to take the Redguard city for themselves. That quest lead to a long quest-line about the rebellion of a city and after handing it back to its rightful owners they called me the hero of that city and thank me every time I return. The "bad guys" did not return after I ran them out. It was far more involved than just kill 10 pigs and collect a pair of pants.

Everything you do is presented through superb storytelling.

In theory a lot of MMO's have grinding paths that allow you to grind up to max level but you will end up missing special gear and weapons rewards and some parts of maps may be locked until certain quests are completed.   ESO you could grind dungeons and dark anchors then go straight into PvP.

Well, theme park mmo's for sure.

Lineage 2 didn't really have "questing" (which to me is one of the most vile words in games).

You grabbed some friends, headed to an area and killed monsters. Or soloed. I thought it was in the end much more fun.

I DID think that quests putting a context on the hunting areas was great in World of Warcraft Beta. But once the game came out I just couldn't play it. Couldn't stand most of the quests and preferred the hunting in Lineage 2.

So staying away from mmo's with quests is better for me and others like me.

Oh sure, I always read the quests. Which is why I learned to hate them. Most of them aren't great, you aren't doing much but running a relay race from quest giver to area to do a few things and run back again. How the hell is that considered game play! >:)

Don't buy a game based on hype or on a whim,do your homework, watch streamers.
All i keep hearing about in mmorpg's is "we have raiding, end game is great, that tells me you have no GAME just very small bits and pieces.
MMORPG genre is in dired need of a true legit fair, experienced developer.Only one exists,Square Enix but just like Blizzard, many of the old school people with creativity are gone so now it is the young Pokemon ARPG Moba type people designing these games. There is always a chance it can bounce back and i believe it will but when,i hope before i am gone.

I'm probably in the minority, but one that I still engage in on occasion that I dont get is wow. I mean, I get the basis of level up > do dungeons > do raids > repeat, but I dont get the overall point, then again I played FFXI for a while before wow so the 'point' was a bit more long-winded than wow since the 'ultimate' thing about FFXI was usually centered around getting a relic/mythic for most jobs (classes). When I first started playing wow in cata, I think it was just as lfr was implemented when I started to raid through that and got everything for my dk, then all I was left with was to do it all over again just 'harder.' As a disclaimer, I've never been the type to do 'hardcore' 'insane' modes in games so heroic versions or whatever were fine 1-2 times through but got old quick for me. I just felt that FFXI did a better job than wow at making all content, both old and new, work together instead of a funnel point like wow did/does. Today, it makes even less sense to me since they are essentially re-doing the entire game every expansion and some people see that as 'normal.'

I think that's what OP mean by the last line, "I know something is great about those games, I just wish I could experience what it is lol ".

I don't like Eve for example, but I get what the Eve players see in it. I don't like sandboxes without story, but I get that other players have a different taste.

On the other hand I don't get scaling (GW2, Eso, etc. etc.) and I don't get what the players see in it, why they accept it. Which is fine, and can sprout interesting discussions.

I don't get the hype around imports (BDO, ArcheAge, etc. last time Bless).

And yep, I really don't get Legends either, but I already left that heap of manure behind and not talking about it (just mourn TSW in silence). I get the Funcom side of it, a second cashgrab attempt, but don't get why the players are ok with it, and happily accept it.
Same goes for the Defiance "relaunch".

I hate questing. PVE and questing are not 1:1 so I don't know where the hell you got the idea that if you don't like questing you must like PVP. You can have an entirely PVE game with none or little questing. EQ1 is the prime example for me there. Archeage is another in a sense. I ran the mill of quests up to level 25 or so and then finished leveling through other stuff like farming and just doing things.

And if you don't like questing or reading stories, which I do no, it's an MMORPG FFS not a single player game, then I couldn't care less how well thought out the quests in ESO are. It's still a quest and it's still boring af to me.

First off, compliments to the OP on an excellent question.

I don't get ESO. I hate the movement controls. They ruin the game for me.

I want to get Eve, but I am a scaredy cat who is afraid of being blown up in deep space where I lose everything. Still, I admire the game from afar.

Everything lately. I am becoming so cynical.  Just tell me the name of a new game and I already hate it.

back in the day we had mob camps with limited questing and content was more player driven then developer driven. I don't want to participate in someone elses story I wanna write my own in a unique world.
