When I've seen lite used with MMO, it was used for the MMORPG and referred to the RPG aspect in being light on the roleplaying mechanics, not on the massively multiplayer part.

Also the term I'm seeing used a lot more now is MOGs, multiplayer online games in reference to games like Destiny. I personally like the sound of MOG, it is quicker to say than MMO, and it is accurate.

lol this guy said in the world of vehicles a MMO lite is a boat and a FFXIV is a truck.

its more like MMO Lite is a SUV and FFXIV is a truck. They aren't that different my dude.

It's still the same ol' arguments 'round these parts.

Semantics really mean nothing... we can call it an MMO, a "CORPG", a "Shared World Shooter", a "Toucan in a Party Dress", an "MMO Lite", a "Hub Based MORPG" --  it doesn't matter what you call them, it doesn't change what they are.

What's the point really?  Even "True MMOs" still instance content, cap areas, and even if they didn't WHO CARES, when was the last time you had more than 100 people in an area that you could see? GW2's WvW? Did it somehow make the game more enjoyable?

I don't know, I think people make a big deal about pigeon holing games into their own definitions too often, and honestly ask any 10 users on this site what an MMO is, they'll all give you a different answer, and they're all wrong, or maybe they're all right...  but that nobody can pin down the exact definition is fairly telling.

And another question, is a game an MMO if the server can handle 1 million people in the same persistent world, but you only ever see 30 at a time?  How different is it than games that allow 100 people in a persistent world and yet you always see 40 people everywhere you go?

Modern civilization cares. It's why languages were invented. So people know what the hell you're saying when words spew out of your mouth. If you start referring to boats, cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, snowmobiles, jet skis as just "vehicles" all the times, people will look at you funny.

So, I drove my vehicle with my vehicle down to the lake, but after the day was done, my vehicle broke down, so I had to leave it there.

Can you guess which vehicle broke down? Probably not. So there's your most obvious answer for why people hate meshing everything under the sun into one category.

    Game = Vehicle
    MMO = Truck
Whatever you want to call Destiny 2 = Boat

While Destiny 2 and say FFXIV are both games, they are not the same game genre. Stop calling boats as trucks.
Thats just silly, society doesn't care what you call it. The differences are extremely minor... games are just different brands of themselves, to use your own analogy, the difference between a game like Star Wars TOR and The Division is the difference between a base model and an "SE" model... they're extremely similar with few differing distinctions.

when you tell someone your "Camry SE" broke down, you'd sound ridiculous, not "in the know".   Who cares?

It's essentially gaming snobbery, "If it's not a REAL MMO it's not worth my time"  but again, YOU can't say exactly what an MMO is, just your opinion of what you THINK an MMO should be. There's no specific number defined for "massive", and many MMOs have had caps in areas much lower than you think, and even less that you've actually seen at any given time.

It's semantics, the meanings are trivial. Games are much too hybridized to really care anymore about the struct definition of what someone thinks and MMO should be.  Until every game company can get on board with a single definition, this will never end, because some people will cry saying 100 people isn't massive enough, or 300 isn't massive enough or 500 isn't massive enough, when in reality, whatever game they're playing, they probably won't see even a quarter at any given moment.

As a GW2 player that arguably has the most people grouped for large scale events regularly, you realize that they CAP the amount of players per area, ALL THE TIME.  Does that not make it an MMO suddenly? Because it's far less than 500 people per instance, in fact, in all PvE cases it's less than 200....  so is it suddenly not an MMO now?

And if it is, what about games that have 50 vs 50 or 100 vs 100 battles?  You can't define it.. boat car truck or van, call it what you want, but don't expect everyone to agree with you. It's a losing battle.

From your posts in this thread it seems you literally have no idea what an MMORPG is what scale of an MMORPG is intended to do ..

It has NOTHING to do at all in any way with how many people can fit on your screen...

What it has to do with those people effecting your gameplay even if you dont see them at all, and yet effecting your World your gameplay  , Like territory control in DAOC , PS2, AO ..

What it has to do is with players invading your friends Village on another planet in SWG and you have to scramble and try to get there and stop them, but guess what there gone they outsmarted you and Jumped Planets again they are now attacking you alliance Town Hall...... Hurry !!!- ..

What it has to do with is another player Digging up a T5 Tmap in UO near your house , and they cant handle the spawn, and bail on it leaving you with some very deadly mobs in your yard..When you log in hours later ..

What it has to do with is backstabbing underhanded devious play of Hundreds of players in some Eve corps , setting up Hostile take overs that some takes months to years to plan , And the courageous thousands that try to fight the good fight

what it has to with is a Persistent World Economy ..

In a game like Destiny you dont effect any other player except those few in your instance for that brief 30 minutes ,...  Then poof they are gone your instance is gone your world is gone , there is nothing you change ..

FFS in Fortnite there is Nothing persistent but fuggin clown shoes , not any shred of Class persistance/World persistence or Economy  ... Shoot other guy pew pew pew ... Game over in 10 minutes rinse repeat ..

You see these are just a few examples of what an MMORPG does , other players effecting the Persistent World .. Others player s you may never even see effecting your game play , In a positive or negative fashion ..

And in any real MMORPG you can attend really great Social events that bring communites together ive been to many Weddings and Funerals for Players where Thousnads showed up to pay respects , Fishing Contest for hundreds of players .. Crafting Contest , the very impressive Fashion/Contest of FF14 , The Amazing Musical Gatherings in LOTRO .. The Poetry sessions in Project Gorgon ..

You can do nothing like any of these things in Destiny and its Ilk .. Thats why they are not and never will be an MMO in anyway regardless of what adverb/adjective/noun/pronoun you want to add to it ..

Thats where the massivley comes in , that why when asked to describe his game RG said thousands of players in a persistent world , Thats why they targeted 1 million accts and 100k concurrent players at launch ..Which was a massive and ambitiuos undertaking in 1997

Destiny is exactly what ATVI/Bungie labeled it has a Single/MUlti/Coop Shooter and quite a good one at that ..What strange is why a very small minority try so hard to want to change this ...Its like the feel there game is like a stepchild ..

Based on what you wrote, GW2 isn't an MMO. Champions Online isn't an MMO. Phantasy Star Universe isn't an MMO.  SWTOR Isn't an MMO.  Pretty much anything with multiple instances of a shared persistent world isn't an MMO.

From your post, the majority of MMOs aren't MMOs.. so....? Nothing you mentioned specifically means an MMO.  Social gatherings AREN'T NECESSARY FOR AN MMO. Player gatherings were a choice, ALWAYS. No different than emote circles back in PSO, or in GW1 hubs.

Thousands of players in a PERSISTENT WORLD is trivial in todays standards. Thousands of players are in persistent worlds, but means NOTHING.  Persistent events are fleeting, how they interact with the player mean very little, and YES Destiny 2 does have events that effect other players when you don't even see them such as the Faction Rallies.

The more you argue on what you think an MMO is, the more you show that your view of MMOs is very rigid and antiquated.

Oh so as long as they call it an "MMO Hybrid" then it's okay? lol, and 260 votes.. yeah that sounds like the majority .. of the gaming population....

It's actually considered a shared world shooter, similar to the division, similar to to hub based games like GW1... which are all WHAAAAT MMO HYBRIDS LOL.

And that includes dozens of other MMOs that are currently considered MMOs by the vast majority of players.

Is SWTOR an MMO?  RIFT?  Hell even WoW has instancing.  It didn't start with GW2.... but okay... I guess that makes me "wrong" because your definition is silly. ;)

GW2 is a Hybrid , and exactly what Arennet said they were targeting and developing and accomplshed just that

I think everyone that has ever played SWTOR will agree that it feel more like KOTOR than it does SWG ...

lol clueless also , and not even worthy of further discussion ....Ill leave this here for you ..you can argue and play semantics with this community all you want , at the end you are part of an extreme minority, and you are wrong ..

Destiny is a Lobby based / Single/Multi/Coop Shooter just as ATVI/Bungie Labeld it , go argue with them , they are actually laughing at folks calling it an MMO ,They think its funny as hell

      Have a nice day

Oh so as long as they call it an "MMO Hybrid" then it's okay? lol, and 260 votes.. yeah that sounds like the majority .. of the gaming population....

It's actually considered a shared world shooter, similar to the division, similar to to hub based games like GW1... which are all WHAAAAT MMO HYBRIDS LOL.

And that includes dozens of other MMOs that are currently considered MMOs by the vast majority of players.

Is SWTOR an MMO?  RIFT?  Hell even WoW has instancing.  It didn't start with GW2.... but okay... I guess that makes me "wrong" because your definition is silly. ;)
No .. When deveolping there game they called it a Hybrid , I never said call it that or that its ok , you said all that ....That being said GW2 is an MMO Destiny is not for obvious reasons ..

And the fact you need to go to such extremes shows you are reaching desperatley here.. Knowingly fabricating and twisting things .. so bad ..

And most folks whove played SWTOR that it feels more like playing KOTOR than it does an MMO like SWG

IMO and i made it quite clesr but reading comp rears its ugly head ..

A game like Destiny is not MMO anything .. i dont care what noun/pronoun/adverb or adjective you want to add , if you were following the thread you would of read that , and not been so blind in your response here ...

you honestly bring nothing worthwhile to the discussion , your middle school rants are laughable ..

I did not say Gaming Population .. you did, more lies or complete ignorance and reading comp .. you decide ..

I said this Community , and this Community does not think Destiny is an MMO at over 80%

It emulates an MMO.  You don't go into the grocery store and complain imitation sugars or crab meat aren't the originals.  Obviously there is a connection people see to original in flavor.

If you were honest with yourself you would admit thousand of players on one server playing in instances is similar to thousands of players playing in instances on MMORPG. There is a logical connection. This isn't a MOBA that is a match.  You have players flowing in and out of instances.

Again you are talking about sever tech.  I am talking about results of server tech.  This is again like complaining imitation crab is fish.  We all know it is fish not crab.  The result is fish that barely taste like crab meat.  Just like sweet n low has a completely different make up from sugar.  Diet drink is twice removed from the original fruit juice.  Are you petitioning grocers for a change.

Just like we all know MMO lite aren't true MMO.  It plays like a themepark MMO.  That is why it has MMO as part of the term.  People have independently come to the term.  It is not rocket science.  Even if you wholly reject the term because you feel you know better... you can at least acknowledge there is a logical reasons.

I actually went to precisely 0 extremes lol.  I simply asked a few questions, and you deflected them.

You stated GW2 was a hybrid, then you went on to say it was an MMO.  But according to your definition it's not.  PvE areas are instanced, once you leave the area, bye bye events.  In fact people hop instances quite often to try and get into ones with certain events so they can finish them.

Oh and PvE areas also hard cap at 150 people in that instance.

Where is the extreme in that? It's the same for Champions Online, SWTOR, WildStar, everything you say there are specific instances of MMOs that contradict you, and yet you still don't want to admit that hybridized game systems can be "MMOs" in the same exact way these instanced MMOs can be.

Fallout 76 will have dozens of players in a single instance, at what point does it become an MMO? The settlements are static, players can attack and defend them, change the world around them in a persistent state.... but they are saying dozens of players...  you have people here saying that's NOT an MMO...   by at what threshold does it become one? 100 people?  200 People?  You just said GW2 was an MMO and they hard cap PvE at 150.. so what are we looking at?

And what about games that add modes with 200 v 200 players?  500 v 500? Are those MMOs if they have a persistent world, even if that world is a glorified lobby?  That's essentially what Conqueror's Blade is.

See, all the MMO's you've named, EvE, SWG, DAOC, AO... those are all decades old games... nothing modern. Maybe the newest being PlanetSide 2,  but they have a 1200 player cap per continent. Woops.

How about you just answer some of those questions, and then we can move on, because right now, there are no "extremes" that I'm jumping to, I'm just presenting facts and questions.

Again I will repeat that calling something an MMO-lite doesn't mean it is an MMO anymore than calling a purple sugar concoction grape make it actually anything grape.  There is a logical step in reasoning because of imitation.  All you can fall back on is that it is not an MMO and I am not saying it is.

A majority wasn't even around for UO and EQ.  They just know MMO is an online game. Sure any MMORPG conclave will be concerned with what is a True MMORPG.  Most current MMORPG or MMO don't even hold to standards of the past.

No .. When deveolping there game they called it a Hybrid , I never said call it that or that its ok , you said all that ....That being said GW2 is an MMO Destiny is not for obvious reasons ..

And the fact you need to go to such extremes shows you are reaching desperatley here..

And again Verm the difference and is and you are leaving out a big part of this equation here ..

A game like Wow has instances Yes .. but it also has and supports the server Tech to deliver Massivley Player content .. Destiny does not .its a Lobby Based Shooter and there is nothing  wrong with that ..

You cannot intentionally leave out a Game like Wows server tech from the discussion , just because it has Instances also its willful ignorance.. If you like , but i dont think i need to i can link dozens of examples of Massivley game play Utilizing Wows server tech .. How many can you link of Destiny doing the same ...............

Who is we .. its a very small minority here that think that ,, and go check the latest Fallout 76 article here .. the result is the same ...

And again even the Devs realize they are not making an MMO just ATVI/Bungie realize they dont have an MMO in Destiny ..

They are laughing at the idea of it ... but i suppose you 3 know better ..

      Im done here ...

I never claimed that Fallout 76 or any of the games are MMO. I said   That is kind of the point you continue to spin.  I said MMO-lite.  Not sure what Fallout is trying to do even bring it up.  I am talking Destiny, The Division, Warframe and etc.  Thry all play like MMO.

You are wrong if you think a minority feel like anything with online capabilities is a MMO.  Only us old guard even care to label.
And again ... ohh boy .. I dont think its MMO anyhting at all i dont care what adverb/pronoun/noun/or adjective you want to add to it ,, its not an MMO it was developed as an MMO it will never be an MMO of any sort

And i never said anything about other than the Community here .. But ive read similar thread at redit for example and the result is the same .. The majority do not feel Destiny is an MMO..

      Dinner for me ..

LMFAO this isnt even worth a response im sorry .. you have fun you 3 call it whatever ya want ,,, wtf ..

LOL that's the point we do call whatever we want.. whatever we want. Apparently some people don't want us to.  Though, y'know, if something isn't worth a response, responding to tell them that, kinda defeats the purpose.

Not in any real context. Just people failing to explain something using an acronym that does not fit what they are describing in any fashion. If it actually worked, no one would complain. That's what you need to realize. It just doesn't work.

Not sure what gives you anymore authority to declare something not working. Are you part of the Federal Acronym Bureau of Review?

No it has always been used as a term to describe something that isn't viewed as full fledged MMO.  It has been around for years.  It has stuck to games like Destiny. Quick search it is described in a 2014 Forbes article as MMO-lite.

This is the only thread I have ever seen that had issues with those games being called MMO-lite.

    LOL

Its amazing how far some of you will go just to scream in the face of reason.

We gave logical and well thought out explanations on why we believe Destiny and games like it are related to MMO in some fashion.

Like I said, we will see what has changed in 12 months. I'm guessing there will be more MMO-Lites on the market and less traditional MMORPGs that people care about.

Most gaming media including this one will be covering quite a few big MMO-Lite games.

I promise this will be a discussion (MMO-Lites) and it will be funny to see if some of you keep the same energy and risk looking even more washed up than you do now.

    Don't back peddle.
